new and useful Improvements in Milking- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention refers to a milking machine, in which the pressure plates for working the teats are moved by means ofa flexible pipe and a string in the same, belonging to a transmission device. In previously known milking machines of this kind the string only is connected with a driving device, whereas the pipe is stationary at its one end. If the pipe has also to move a corresponding pressure plate, it is necessary that the string and the pipe have a sutlicient bend. If they have not such a bend, only that pressure plate connected with the string will move, whereas the pressure plate of the pipe will remain stationary and the pipe will only form a'rest for the same.
In consequence ofthe said bend, the pipe, when the stringis pulled, will move longi tudinally, because the string tends to stretch and to move the pressure plate. Of course, this stretching will cause a considerable friction between the string and the pipe. This friction requires an increase of power of the driving device, which increase unfavorably influences the economy of working of the machine. Inconsequence of the necessity of a suiiicient bend of the string and of the pipe, great lengths of these latter are needed and, consequently, greater costs arise. The string can move the pressure plate in one direction only, and thus special devices are needed for the return movement,
such devices causing complicated constructions and increased cost.
All these inconveniences are removed by the present invention by the fact that the string and the pipe work independently of each other, each being connected with a special driving device, so that they will reciprocate in opposite directions. Thus a shorter stroke is needed than in the above named, previously known construction in which the string only is operated by the driving mechanism and causes the entire movement, the movement being in the present case equally divided between the string and the pipe, thus effecting a saving of power. sure plates, are connected at the other end, preferably yieldingly, each with one arm of a balance, the said balance being pivoted on a projection from one of two link points of a link square, the said link points having a rectilinear movement, whereas the proper strings are connected with a similar balance of a projection from the other link point.
In the annexed drawings a form of construction of a milking machine according to the invention is illustrated. Figure 1 is a Side elevation and partly a section of the machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view partly in section of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on line IIIII][ in Fig. 2.
The working of the teats is effected by means of two pressure plates 2 for each teat placed in a teat covering. 3 is a flexible pipe or tube and 4 a string introduced into the same. Both the pipe and the string have a reciprocating movement of the same stroke but in opposite directions. The movement of the pipe and of the string is facilitated by a link square 5. In each teatcovering, the top of one plate 2 is connected with a string 4:, and the top of the other plate 2 with a pipe 3, the said plates receiving their movement from a link square 5, whereas the bottoms of these plates are in the same Way connected with an independent' link square 5. The tops of all the plates are thus connected with one link square 5 and, in the same manner, the bottoms of all the plates areconnected with another link square 5. The two link squares 5 are (Fig. 3) placed one below the other. At their ends they are provided with two link points 6, moving in a straight line, which run, preferably by means of rollers 7, on a guide rod 9 mounted in a casing 8 of the link squares 5. From each side of the link points there extends a projection 10. Each such projection has at its end a tap 12 which can slide in a sleeve and is surrounded by a coil spring 11. On this tap is pivoted a balance 13. The pipes 3 are pivotally connected with the front balances 13, and the strings 4 with the rear balances. Each link connecting piece 14 of the upper and lower link square 5 is connected with a flexible pipe 15 and with a string 16 introduced into this latter. Between the two link connecting pieces 14 of both link squares 5, a coil spring 17 is placed around the string 16. The pipe 15 and the string 16 receive a sliding movement in opposite points 6 to move to and from each other.
Thus the pipes 3 and thestr-ings 4: will as seen, by the same stroke receive a sliding movement in directions opposite to -each other and give the milking movement to the plates 2; During this operation the balances I3 adjust their movement to various teat thicknesses, and the coil springs 11 cause the plates 2 to rest yieldingly upon the teats. By employing the link squares in the manner described, several advantages are gained. Thus, for instance, the pressure plates receive a suitable closing movement, the speed of the movement of the link squarerfrom an inner to'an'outer position of the link points 6 decreasing.
The detailsof the present invention can vary as regards material, number, form, size andcomposition, and can be reversed, as long as the characteristic features of the invention are retained.
What I claim is:
L'A milking machine comprising movable pressure plates for Working the teats, means for actuating said plates comprising flexible members, flexible pipes incasing said members, said pipes and members being connectedat one of their endsto said plates and capable of reciprocating movement in opposite directions, balances connecting the opposite :ends of said pipes and members, a link square having two link points capable of rectilinear movement, said balances being yieldingly mounted on said link square, and means for actuating said-linksquare to impart reciprocating movements in oppo site directions to said balances.
2. A milking machine comprising movable pressure plates, flexible means for actuatrng said pressure plates, reciprocating flexible means controlling the last means and movable at right angles thereto, and

3. A milking machine comprising mov-l able pressure plates, flexible members connected to said pressure plates, pipes con. nected to said pressure plates, and a link square for reciprocating said pipes and members in opposite directions.
4. A milking machine comprising movable pressure plates,- -flexible members connected to said pressure plates, a pairoit projections mounted for reciprocating rectilinear movements in opposite directions, said members being connected to said projections, and means for actuating said projections whereby said members will be reciprocated in opposite directions.
A milking machine comprising movable pressure plates, a link square biased to a predetermined position, flexible members connecting-said link square with said plates, means interposed between said link square and said flexible members to permit automatic adjustment of said members with relation to said link square, and means for actuating said link-square against its bias.
6. A -milking machine comprising movable pressure plates, a pair .of projections mounted for reciprocating rectilinear movement, a link square for actuating said projections in opposite directions, flexible members connecting said projections with said plates, and means for actuating said link square whereby said flexible members will be reciprocated in opposite directions.
