To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. GANI'VA: WAY, a citizen of the United States-resid ng at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valves and Valve-Spring Removers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to-a tool for use in lifting and removing the valve springs and valves of internal combustion engines.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character of improved construction to engage valve rods and valve springs of different sizes, and embodying means for lifting the valves and removing the springs with greater ease and facility.
Another object is to provide an improvedconstruction of tool with adjustable jaws and means for quickly and conveniently adjusting the same. v
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my improved valve and valve spring remover. Fig. 2 is'a top plan view of the same.

In carrying my lnventlon into practice ll providea tool of the character described comprising a pair of superposed levers 1 and 2 terminating at their rear end in han dies 3 and 4. These levers are pivotally connected at a point between their transverse centers and forward ends, to permit said forward ends of the levers to be adjusted toward and from each other, as well as to permit of the forward end ofthe up per lever being independently operated, for a? purpose hereinafter described. As shown in the present instance the pivotal connection comprises a pivot lug 5 extending upwardly from the lever 1 and disposed between a pair of pivot lugs 6 depending from the lever 2, said lug being connected by a headed transverse pivot pin 7 held in position by a cotter pin or retaining key '8. The lugs 6 are spaced a greater distance than the width of the lug 5, as will be evident by ref erence to F ig. 3.
The forward end of the lever l is in the form of a comparatively wide plate which is forked to Provide a-pair of opposed jaws 9, said jaws being rigid with said lever and offset, laterally beyond the plane of the lever to form a wide surface to engage and bear upon the lower end of the valve spring. The upper surfaces 10 of the jaws 9 are beveled to form inclined'planes so that the jaws may be readily inserted under the lower convolution of the spring, o as to permit the valve stem or tappet rod to enter the space between said jaws, as will be readily understood.
The forward end of the. lever 2' is also forked to provide. a pair of jaws 11. These jaws are also offset laterally beyond the plane. of the lever 2 to form a wide bearing for engagement with the upper convolution of the spring and are rabbcted at their upper sides along their inner faces to form inwardly projecting flanges 12 of less thickness or depth than the jaws, so that they may be freely inserted between convolutions of a spring, and the spring securely retained in engagement therewith. The walls of the rabbets are formed to provide straight side walls or surfaces 13 and curved rear walls or shoulders-14, said walls operating to hold the coils of a spring seated on the flanges from having lateral motion and from springing out rearwardly beyond the curved their forward ends, and which permit of the adjustment of said j aws 11 toward and from each other. By this means the distance between the jaws may be regulated, to adapt the device for application to valve stems and springs of different diameters, as Well as to adapt-the upper jaws to be engaged with valve seat guides when necessary for the purpose of ringing the ]aWs 11 mto bearing engagement with the upperconvolution of the spring.
The arms 16 are adapted to be adjusted toward and from each other for the purpose of adjusting the jaws 11, such adjusting movement of the arms 16 being permitted by the loose pivotal connection afforded by spacing the lugs 6 a greater distance apart than'the width of the lug 5, as described. For the purpose of adjusting the arms 16 an adjusting device is'provided, comprisinga shaft 17 having right and lefthand threaded ends 18 and 19 which work in correspond ingly threaded openings 20 in bearing pins 21. The bearing pins 21 are fitted in verti-- cal openings 22 formed in offsets 23carried by the arms'16, and said offsets and. arms are formed with openings 23 through which the threaded ends of the shaft extend more or less loosely, thus allowing thev bearing pins or bushings 21 to have aslightdegree of pivotal play, to permit the arms 16 to be adjusted inwardly and outwardly. At the centerof the shaft is an angular head or. portion 24: which may be employed as a fin-- ger piece. or to which awrench or similar tool may be applied for the purpose of adjusting the shaft, as will be readlly understood.
It will be understood that by means of the the base of the spring and said jaws of the upper lever forced upwardly by depressing the handle 4, thus enabling a large-degree of power to be appl1ed tolift or compress the valve spring for removalof the cotter pin or fastening so that the spring may be readily removed and the valve lifted.
' A locking means is provided for holding the two levers in adjusted position by spacing the sets of jaws at the required distance apart. This locking devlce comprises a latch member 25 pivoted at its lower end to a lug 26 on the lever 1 and extending up wallof the. slot 15, whereby the .lever 2 may be locked in any desired position in its range of movement relative to the lever 1.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim: Y
1. A tool of the character described comprising a pair of superposed pivoted levers having forked ends forming superposed pairs of jaws, the upper lever of the pair being longitudinally bifurcated to form sprlngarms carrying the jaws thereof, and means adjustably connecting said arms for moving the jaws thereof toward or from each other.
2. A tool of the character described comprising a pair of superposed levers pivotally connected at a point between their transverse center and forward ends, said levers having handles at their rear ends and being forked at their forward ends to form pairs of superposed jaws, the upper lever being longitudinally slotted to provide spring arms carrying the jaws thereof and extending in front and rear of the pivotal connec tion, and means adjustably connecting said arms.
8. A tool of the character described comprising a pair of superposed levers, said levershaving forked forward ends forming pairs of superposed jaws, the upper lever'being longitudinally slotted to provide spring arms carrying the jaws thereof, a loose pivotal connection between the arms of the upper lever and the lower lever adapted to permit movement of the jaws toward and from each other, and means for connecting the arms for relatively adjusting the same.
4. A tool of the character described comprising a pair of superposed pivoted levers having forked forward ends forming jaws, the upper lever being longitudinally slotted to provide spring arms carrying the jaws thereof, bearing bushings mounted in said arms and having threaded transverse openings, and an adjusting shaft having reversely threaded end portions passing through and adjustably engaging the threaded openings in the bushings.
