The collapsible reel barrel comprises a plurality of similarly constructed comple-m mentally shaped transversely curved staves 1, made of wood or other suitable material forming the main or body portion of the barrel, said staves 1, are disposed in cylindrical relation between transversely curved end'staves 2 and 3, when the barrel is assembled, said staves 2 and 3, being separated from one another to provide a side opening into the barrel adapted to be closed when desired by a plurality of transversely curved door staves l, forming a flexible side door.
One of the staves 4, is disposed to interfit with the end stave 2, while the other stave 4, is adapted to have its outer longitudinal edge interfit with the end stave 3, when the flexible side door is closed. One longitudinal edge of'each of the staves 1, 2, 3 and 4, is grooved or concaved in shape and the opposite edge thereof is convex, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, so that any number. of staves may be arranged to interfit with one another and the curvature of the interfitting portions of the staves permits a certain amount of relative movement therebetween without causing a separation or opening which, when the device is assembled, would afford a means of loss of the contents of the barrel.

The operation is as follows:
With the various parts of the collapsible barrel formed as described the assembly of the same is very simple. The staves 1, 2, 8 and 4, being connected by the cables 5, are laid flat upon the ground with the trans versely grooved sides up, in which position one of the reel heads 6, with its hinged locking member 11, open, may be secured to the staves 1, 2 and 3,.by means of the bolts 9,
with the ends of the said staves engaged in the grooved portion 8, of thereel head, and with the locking member 11, thereof registering with the cut away portion of the reel head and the side opening. of the barrel formed when the doorstaves 4, are inopen position as shown in Fig. 1. The partitions 14, may now be inserted through the open end of the barrel to engage in the annular grooves formed by the transverse grooves of the' barrel staves. The rotatable reel shaft 17, is now inserted into the barrel through the partitions 14, with one of its squared ends 16, projecting through the bearing plate 15, of the reel head 6, already in position. The opposite reel head 6, is next secured in position by bolts 9, with the hinged locking member 11,;thereof, also registering with the side; opening of the bar rel, thus affording a suitable opening in the barrel to permit materials of difl'erentklnds if desired to be placed in the various barrel compartments for shipment or storage.
The rotatable reel shaft 17 is used when it is desired toship, or storematerials such as cloth of different kinds, wires, cablesor other articles adapted to be wound or wrapped upon the reel. With one end of the cloth or article to be stored in each of the barrel compartments attached to the shaft 17, a handle, crank or other suitable means is engaged on one or both of the squared ends of the shaft, which is rotated, thus simultaneously winding the articles upon the shaft in their respective compartments. The door staves 4, are now moved into position to close the side opening of the barrel, and the hinged locking members 11, closed to permit the curled portions 13, thereof, to engage over the ends of the staves 4, and be locked therewith by means of bolts 9. The belts formed by the links 18, are now disposed around the barrel, a short distance from one another, to reinforce the same, said belts having the ends thereof detachably secured together by means of the turnbuckle, thus permitting the belts to be drawn tightly around the barrel, and providing a pair of annular rails about the barrel to permit the barrel to be rolled thereon, keeping the barrel staves clear, and also affording a means for easily tilting or turning the barrel when the same isbeing rolled, which in barrels of cylindrical form is usually; a diliicult matter to perform. 1
It will be seen that the collapsible barrel may readily be taken apart to permit the same to be compactly assembled in knock down form for shipment or storage when the same is not in use.
I am aware that various details of con struction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention: I
1. In a collapsible barrel of the class described, a flexible bodyportion, means having openings therein removably secured thereto for closing the ends thereof to form a rigid construction, locking members forming a part of said means adapted to close said openings and lock the barrel, and rotatable means journaled in said means to form a reel adapted to have materials wound thereon for shipment.
2. In a collapsible barrel of the class described, a plurality of staves, means flexibly engaging the same one to another, head members having openings therein removably secured to the ends of said staves to form a rigid barrel, closure means forming a part of said head members to close the openings therein and engage certain of said staves to hold the barrel locked, rotatable means axially disposed within said barrel journaled in said head members to form a reel to permit materials to be wound thereon, and means disposed around said barrel to reinforce the same and permit tilting and turning thereof when the barrel is being rolled.
3. A collapsible barrel of the class described comprising interfitting staves, means flexibly connecting the same one to another, members having openings therein removably secured to said staves to close the ends of scribed comprising a flexible body portion,
barrel heads engaging over the ends thereof and removably secured thereto, a door in said flexible body portion to afford a means for placing materials Within the barrel for shipment, and hinged locking members end members removably secured to said staves to form a rigid construction and close the endsof the barrel, and a hinged member forming part of each of said end members adapted to engage over the ends of said flexible door when the same is closed and be removably secured thereto to tightly close the barrel.
6. In acollapsible barrel of the class described, flexibly connected interfitting staves, the end staves of which are spaced from one another to form a side opening for the barrel, door staves flexibly connected with one of the end staves to form a side door for closing said side opening, barrel heads removably secured to said interfitting staves having openings therein registering with said side opening, end locking members on said barrel heads to close said end openings and engage over the ends of said side door to completely close the barrel, rotatable means Within the barrel journaled in said barrel heads to permit materials to be wound thereon When said locking members and,
door are open, and linked members removably engaged around said interfitting staves and said door staves when the barrel is closed to reinforce the same and afford a means for tilting and turning the barrel When it is rolled.
7. In a collapsible device of the class described comprising connected interfitting 4O registering With said locking means and adapted to be engaged thereby for maintaining the device closed.
8. In a knock-down barrel of the class described, a flexible body portion, end members removably engaged, thereover, a door in said body portion to afford access into said barrel When the same is open, means Within said barrel for dividing the same into chambers, rotatable means projecting therethrough and journaled in said end members for Winding different materials thereon in each of said chambers a-nd removable reinforcing means forsaid barrel when the same is closed for shipment.
9. In a collapsible barrel of the class described, a flexible body portion having an opening therein, a flexible door for closing said opening, end members for closing the ends of said body portion each having an opening therein registering With the opening in said body portion to permit said flexible door to open and close, and 'meansfor closing the openings in said end members and engaging the ends of said door to lock' the same in closed position.
