Vfence-gates.
Animportant object of therinvention is to provide a fence-gate which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strongly braced against sagging, easy and convenient to repair, and having hingeelements secured to the brace bars of the same, in a novel manner.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is an elevation of one side of the gate, Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of one end of the saine, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows, Fig. 4E is a side elevationv ofk the opposite side of the gate, Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 5 5 of'Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, Fig. 6 is a similar view taken on line 6-6 o f Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, and, Fig. 7 is a plan view of the gate.
The improved gate, in its preferred embodiment, as shown in the drawings, comprises substantially vertical transverse preferably metallic flat strips 10, 11 and 12, arranged upon the same side of spaced substantially horizontal longitudinal staves or bars 13, preferably formed of wood, although other suitable material may be employed, as shown.
Arranged upon corresponding sides of the transverse fiat strips 10, 11 and 12, are preferably metallic supplemental transverse strips 14, 15 and 16, the same being bent at spaced intervals to provide laterally extending pockets 17, in horizontal alinement to receive and detachably hold the staves or bars 13, as shown. The supplemental strip 141 is permanently and rigidly secured to the transverse strip 10, by means of bolts or rivets 17 or the like, or other suitable means. The supplemental strips 15 are secured to the strips 11 by bolts or rivets 18 or the like, forming a permanent connection. The end supplemental transverse strip 16 is detachablyY secured to the strip 12 by means of Ybolts'19 or the like. A
The transverse strip 10, as more clearly shown in Figs.1 and 5, is provided with l a laterally extending longitudinal Harige 20, covering the outer ends of thek adjacent pockets 17, to close the Vsame, and preferably secured thereto by means of solder or the like. The transverse strip 12, as more clearly shown in Figs. 3, 2 and 4, is provided with a laterally extending longitudinal flange 21, extending in an opposite direction from the flange 20. The supplemental transversestrip 16, as more clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and7, is provided 'with a laterally extending longitudinal flange 22, extending in an opposite direction to the flange 21, and covering the outer ends of the adjacent pockets 17, to close the saine, and preferably rigidly secured thereto by means of solderor the like.
From the foregoing description, it is obvious that by removing the supplemental strip 16, any one of the staves or, bars 13 which may have become broken or damaged, may be readily removed and a new one substituted therefor without disturbing the other staves or bars. Upon replacing this supplemental strip 16 and securing the same to the strip 12, the bars will be again securely held in place.
Arranged upon the outer sides of the flat strips 10, 11 and 12, are preferably metallic diagonal brace strips or bars 23, Vwhich cross and are preferably secured together by means of a bolt or rivet 23 or other suitable means. These diagonal brace strips are rigidly secured to the transverse strips 10, 11 and 12, by means of bolts or rivets 21 or the like. As more clearly shown in Fig. 4, corresponding ends of the diagonal brace strips or bars 23 engage the flange 21 of the strip 12, thus forming a powerful connection for preventing sagging of the gate.
The opposite corresponding ends of the brace strips or bars 23, which are rigidly secured to the transverse strip 10, as more clearly shown inFigs. 4; and 7, extend longitudinally beyond the strip 10, providing hinge leaves25, which are bent upon themselves to provide hinge knuckles 25 to receive the pintles of the co-acting hinge menibers (not shown). l'
In theiuseor1 the gate, the ordinary pintle t carrying hinge members are secured to the post, and the hinge knuckles 25 placed thereon, wherebythe gate is'properly hung and may be Vswung to the closed and open positions, as is customary. The diagonal brace rods` 23 having rigidsconnection with the transverse strips, engaging the` ange 21, and having the hinge knuckles carried thereby o1' integral therewith, afford effectual and powerful means for preventing sagging of the gate. In case one or more of the staves or bars 13 should become brokenor other- Wise damaged, the same may be readily removed by removing the supplemental strip 16, subsequent to which the new stave may be inserted within the pockets 17. This having been done, the supplemental strip is again secured to the strip 12.
The transverse strips `and the diagonal brace strips are preferably Vformed of suitably stiff sheet metal, thus providing a gate which, while. exceedingly strong, will be very light, and may be conveniently swung to the opened and closed position without undue exertion upon the operator, which is particularly desirable where the gate is to be operated by children or women.
Itis to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of. parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit oli-the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

a lateral iange, a corresponding number of supplemental transverse strips bent to provide longitudinal sets of pockets and secured upon corresponding sides of the flat strips, diagonal brace strips secured to the opposite side of the flat strips and extending for substantially the entire length of the gate with corresponding ends contacting with the lateral flange of the end flat strip and their corresponding opposite ends extending beyond the opposite end of the gate and bent into hinge knuckles, and longitudinal bars arranged in the pockets.
2. A gate comprising a plurality of flat transverse strips with the end strip having a lateral flange, a corresponding number of supplemental transverse strips bent to provide outwardly bulging pockets with the pockets of the end supplemental strips closed at their outer ends, means detachably connecting one supplemental end stripv to the corresponding end flat strip, means permanently securing the other supplemental strips to the corresponding flat strips, longitudinal bars arranged in the pockets, and diagonal brace strips secured upon the opposite side of the flat strips and extending for substantially the entire length of the gate with corresponding ends contacting with the lateral liange of the end flat strip and their corresponding opposite ends extending beyond the opposite end of the gate and bent into hinge knuckles.
