Description
WLM. CONGER. Improvement Vin Coal-Hed Stands, N0.12,6.7 v w v Patented`lVlay14,1872.
mxmmua WALTER M. CONGER, OF NE'VVARK, EW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-HOD STANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,676, dated May 14, 1872.
this specification. Figure 1' is a plan View,
and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the completed article.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in both the figures. The article is manufactured from a single piece of tough sheet-iron struck up into form at one or more operations with suitable dies. I will designate the several parts by A1 A2, dto. A1 is a broad plane base..v A2 is a rim surrounding the part A1, and rising with tasteful beads `or partial convolutions to an upper edge or principal bead elevated one inch, more or less, above the base. A3 is a drooping lip outside of the riln proper, A2, and descending from the upper edge or principal bead to a point a little below the base A1. The lower edge of the lip A3 is finished by Ibeing rolled under. There may be a wire in the edge or not, as preferred. The whole may be richly japanned or otherwise protected, and variously decorated, es-
pecially on the outer surface of the hanging lip A3. I propose to cover the upper surface of the plain portion A1 with a layer of leather, parchment, cartridge or other paper, papiermach,cloth, felt, wood, cork, India rubber, kamptulicon, matting, netting, or analogous soft material. Such material may be permanently Xed to the iron by cementing with glue, in which a little acetic acid or vinegar has been mingled, or by other suitable cement adapted to adhere strongly to the surface of iron 5 or it may lie loosely therein, and may be capable of being frequently exchanged and cleaned.
It is not absolutely essential that the han ging portion A3 be continuous, as it may be perforated in various ways. So, also, it may be of brass or other metal, nickel-plated or otherwise coated. I greatly prefer, however, for lightness'and economy, as also for general usefulness, that it shall be rolled iron, with not only the base A1 and riin proper, A2, but also the hanging and bracing portion A3 in a continuous piece;
I claim- As a new article of manufacture, the coalhod stand, constructed as herein described, and adapted to serve as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of February, 1872, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' WALTER M. CONGER.
