To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'DON Gr. BOY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Well-Depth Registers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to measuring implements, and more particularly, to that class of measuring instruments wherein' the depth of oil-wells and the like may be ascertained by the workers.
It is also among the means and objects of the invention, to provide a measuring instrument of the character stated, which is portable in nature, and one which may be readily attached to and detached from the drilling cable.
Another feature of the invention resides in the. novel construction and arrangement of the friction pulley. which is adapted for engagement with the drilling cable, and of its connection with the register, whereby the latter Will be operated to disclose the exact depth of the well.
It is also among the primary objects of the invention to provide a well depth measuringl instrument which is of such simple construction as will reduce the cost of manufacture of constructions of thiszcharacter, and provide novel details in the construction and arrangement of parts with view to higher efficiency generally.
All of the foregoing together with additional advantageous details and arrangement of parts of the preferred embodiment of my invention Will be clear from the specific description hereinafter contained, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein the said embodiment of the invention is illustrated for the purpose of facilitating a full understanding of the present improvements.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section view through a portion of the registering mechanism.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings, and in connection with which like reference numerals will refer to the same parts in the several views, the drilling cable which carries upon the lower extremity thereof, the usual drilling implement, is designated by the numeral 1. With more especial reference to the present improvements, I provide a supporting frame or body 2, which, has arranged adjacent its outer extremity, a register 3, whereby the revolutions of a friction wheel which will be hereinafter described, may be accurately registered thereby. Flanges 4 and 4c are formed adjacent the base portion of the register 3 and are provided with suitable openings whereby screws 5 or other fastening devices may be passed therethrough' into engagement with the body 2 in order that the same may be secured thereto. A shaft 6 is arranged-longitudinally of the body 2 and-is supported for rotation thereupon within concaved bearing grooves 7. A bearing 8 engageable over a portion of the shaft 6 is secured to the body portion 2, through the medium of bolts 9 which are passed through flanges formed upon the said bearing, which bolts have turned into engagement with their threaded extremities, nuts 9. A friction pulley 10 is mounted upon the shaft 6 at a point adjacent the outer extremity thereof and provides means whereby the drilling cable 1 may be received thereby within a peripheral groove 11 as arranged therein. A plurality of handles, which I have designated by the numeral 12 are socured to one side of the body 2 and provide means whereby the device may be supported by the operator in a position whereat the peripherally grooved friction pulley is en gaged with the drilling rope 1. It is to be noted, that the longitudinally extending shaft 6 extends into engagement with the register 3 and, upon rotation thereof, will serve to actuate the same. By referring to Fig. 3, the section of the registering mechanism is clearly presented.
It will be seen that a sleeve 13 is mounted upon the shaft 6 andextends longitudinally through the casing of the register. This sleeve 13 is fixedly secured to one end of the casing, not being deemed necessary to be herein shown, and is free of the shaft so as to allow this shaft 6 to rotate when the pulley 10 is rotated. Adjacent the outer end of the casing of the register the disk is fixed upon the shaft in any desired manner. This disk is formed of a closed back 14 and a collar 15 formed thereon upon which the reference numerals or characters are carried. It will be noted that the sleeve 13 ter minates adjacent the inner-surface of "the back 14, thus permitting the disk .to -be turned as above specified. The next corresponding disk 15 isprovided with a rack W 19 which has a pinion 1-8 constantly meshing therewith. This pinion is carried, upon the stub shaft 17 secured in any suitable mannerfto the "sleeve .13. 'The lug 16 .is formed upon the disk 14:;Whll6 it should be understoodthatthe,remaining disks 15, are
mounted on the sleeve'13. 'The sight openings 3? formed in the casingof-the register are. in ali-nement with the collarof the reg-- istering disk. As the shaft 6 :rotatesthe disk'secured thereto will also be'rotatedand for this reason will move the lug. 16. When this lug'has moved one completerevolution it will engage the pinion '18 and .will move thesa-mea slight distance. .As "the pinion 18 is rotated it will rotatethe next disk 15 by the; meshing'of the: pinion with the-rack 1'9. These disks are all-similarly constructed, with the exception that only one disk is carried upon the shaft, while the remaining disks :fllB'TIlOllIllZBd upon the sleeve and are I also providedwith the racks for themeshing "engagement withthe corresponding pinion. 'Itis obvious that asthe shaft rota'tes,-the various disks will berotated in order and with the corresponding rapidity -to cause the indicating numerals or units there registering .mechanism' of the register 3. Thus, it will be apparent, that shouldthe pulley be one foot in circumference, the" registering mechanism would be advanced one unit upon 'each'complete revolution thereof, and" thereby accurately measuring. each foot of cable as it is passed over'thefrictional pulley upon its winding drum.
