A'rTo R N Ev HORSESHOE-BLANK-FORMING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
atented May 14, 1918.
Application led May 4, 1917. Serial No. 166,408.
To all lwhom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Gnocca C. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New `York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Horseshoe-Blank- Forming Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a horse shoe blank forming machine and has for its primary object to shape a billet into the form rcquired for making horse shoes, a feeding means being embodied therein whereby the operator may feed a heated billet to the machine at any time during its cycle of operations.
Another object of .my invention is to provide a horse shoe blank forming machine which first bends the billet into the shape required and then attens the same to remove all inequalities of the blank which result from the forming operation.
With these and other objects in view which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed yout in the claims, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specilication, `in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of ahorse shoe blank forming machine embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the bending mechanism,
Fig. I3 is a top plan view of the flattening mechanism of the device,
Fig. e is a partial sectional side elevation of the bending mechanism showing the parts in a dili'erent position from that designated in Figs. l and 2,
Fig. 5 is a partial sectional side elevation of the flattening mechanism showing the parts in a diiferent position from that designated in Figs. 1 and 3.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the die block and the horse shoe thereon with means for removing the shoe therefrom.
Fig. 7 is a sectional detail view of the former with its associated parts.
Fig. 8 is a detail view showing the end of the former.
Fig. 9 is a cross sectional view showing the sliding table for carrying the blanks to the flattening mechanism.
ln the drawings l designates generally a frame upon which the forming mechanism of the device is mounted. At one end of the frame a transverse shaft 2 is journaled, and a former cam 3 is mounted on said shaft at a point intermediate the ends thereof. A guideway 4 is mounted on the frame l and extends forwardly from the shaft 2 in line with the former cam 8, and a former carriage 5 is mounted in said guides for sliding movement and has its rear end abutting the cam 3. A pulley 6 is mounted upon an eX- tension 7 at the rear end of the frame l, anda flexible cable 8 has its one end secured to an eye bolt 9, which is mounted on the carriage 5, and is trained over said pulley 6. and has a weight 10 secured on the other end thereof whereby said carriage is held in engagement with the cam 3.
The former carriage 5 extends in front of the guides 4 and has a forming block l1 mounted at its front end, said former block being shaped to conform with the inclosure of a horse shoe blank. Mounted on the frame l is a pair of rollers l2, said rollers being mounted on opposite sides of the forming block l1 and lying in a plane disposed transversely to the path of said former block. Each roller 12 is mounted upon a carriage 13 adapted to move in a transverse guideway le formed on the frame l. A spring 25 is provided for each carriage 13 and serves to normally position the rollers in the path of the forming block 11, stops 16, mounted on the frame l, serving to prevent said rollers moving too far into the path of the Iforming block. A billet rest 17 is formed on the frame l, and is disposed so as to position a billet for proper engagement with the rollers 12 and forming block 11.
A receiving table 18 is mounted on thel frame l above the mechanism just described. and a pusher plate 19 is mounted for longitudinal movement on the upper surface thereof by means of guideways 20. A guide 21 is mounted on the upper surface of said receiving' table 18 on either side of said pusher plate 18, said guides having vertical upwardly distending slots 22 formed therein whereby a billet may be properly placed upon said receiving table by the attendant. The guides 2l are adjustable to accommodate billets of diii'erent lengths and thicknesses, the lengthwise adjustment thereof bcing rofl being pivotally mounted at the lower end of the lever 53. The cam 56 is so timed relative to the reciprocations of the table 47 that when said table is at its extreme rearward position said cam operates the lever 53 through the connecting rod 58, and fulcrumed lever 57, to move a formed billet out from under the 4pile in the hopper 44 on to the die block 46, whereupon the table 47 moves forwardly under the sector 50 and the formed blank is flattened, as hereinbefore described. lt will be noted at this point, that the upper end of the lever 53 has a radially disposed face 59 which engages the edge ot a formed blank within the inclosure thereof to move the same out of the hopper, and that said lever has a rearwardly facing cam surface 60 formed thereon so that the lever will raise the pile in the hopper when it moves rearwardly, so that the face 59 may engage the next formed billet prepara-tory to fitting it upon the die block 46. Upwardly projecting shoulders 46 are formed on the front and rear ends of the die block 46 to retain a formed block thereon in proper position during the reciprocations or' the table 47.
A second cam 6l is mounted upon the shaft 49, and a fulcrumed lever 62, mounted on the frame l, has its upper end bearing against said cam. A bell crank lever 63 is mounted upon a vertical axis in the frame l. The lower end of the fulcrumed lever 62 is bifurcated, as designated at 64, and the lower arm ot' said bell crank lever 63 is engaged by the inclosure of said bifurcated end 64. The upper arm of said bell crank lever 63 is oifset and extends upwardly from the main portion of the lever. A pusher plunger 65 is mounted in transverse guideways 66 of the frame l and has a hole 67 at the outer end thereofl loosely engaging the upper arm of the bell crank lever 63.
The main portion of the pusher plunger 65 is disposed in a horizontal plane above a formed blank on the die block 46 and has a rearwardly extending end 65 at its inner end, which is disposed in the horizontal plane of a formed blank on said die block. The cam 61y is so timed relative to the re ciprocations of the table 47 that, as the die block 46 is moved toward the rear of the shaft 49, after the same has been iiattened as before described, the pusher plunger 65 is operated to engage the blank with the end to push the blank oli of the die block 46 into a receptacle 68 at one side oi the table 47. After it has been moved inwardly to push a blank o the die block 46 the pusher plunger 65 remains in its extreme inner position, and the table 47 continues to move toward its rearward position where another blank is placed on the die block 46, as designated in Fig. 3, and then moves iorward to engage the blank with the die sector 50. During thisnioveinent the pusher plunger 65 remains in its extreme inner position with the rearwardly extending end 65 disposed out of the path of the blank. When the blank is moved out of the path of the plunger the cam 6l operates to retract the pusher plunger 65 to its extreme outer position where the end 65 is again positioned out of the path of the blank on the opposite side thereof. The pusher plunger remains at rest in this position until the blank is moved toward the rear of shaft 49 where the plunger is again moved inwardly to push the blank oii' of the die block 46 as hereinbefore described.
Having thus fully described my invention, claim 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a forming means, of a receiving table, guides adapted to properly position a billet on said receiving table, a
