DISPLAY DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1a, 1918.
Application filed February 19, 1917. Serial No. 149,579.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE H. DAT: and HARRY H. STILL, citizens of the United States, residing at Southbridg'e, in the county of VVOrceSt'er and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in advertising novelties, and has particular reference'to an improved display device particularly adapted for personal wear.
One of the leading objects of our present invention is the provision of an improved advertising device 'of neat and attractive form, adapted to be applied to an article of personal wear, and which shall be of such character as to be unobjectionable to the wearer and at the Same time clearly display the desired advertising or display figure to others while being worn,
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a device of this character in which the several parts shall be blended together to form a neat ensemble and eliminate to the greatest possible degree all objectionable prongs, corners or the like which might otherwise be liable to catch on the hair or clothing of the wearer, or become bent out of place.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of an improved display device which may be readily constructed and stamped from a single piece of material, and which will possess certain desirable or utilitarian features, but primarily which shall satisfactorily display the desired distinctive or onamental figure for recognition and advertising urposes. v
Other 0 jects and advantages of our improved construction should be readily apparent by reference to the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will be understood that we may make any modifications in the specific details of construction shown and described within the scope of the appended claims without departing from or exceeding the spirit of our invention.
Figure I represents a plan view of one embodiment of our invention.
Fig. II represents a similar view of another form thereof.
Fig. III represents a similar View of an additional form.
Fig, IV represents a view of one of our advertising novelties in use.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 has been employed to denote an ordinary spectacle or goggle frame having the end piece 2 bearing the temple 3 and having suitably secured thereto, as by the pivot 4, the side shield or screen members which are provided with our improvement.
These shield members in the construction illustrated comprise frame members having the lower or outer bar or frame portion 5 in substantially straight strip with the heavy end portions 6 provided with apertures 7 to engage the pivots 4, and having the curved rear frame portion 8. These several parts are ordinarily and preferably stamped from sheet metal and have suitably secured thereto the screening member 9, the parts just described being an ordinary construction of side shield or screen for an eye protector, and forming in themselves no essential part of our invention.
Our invention, however, briefly stated, consists in providing within this goggle shield frame or the like, a suitable display device, distinctive figure, or the like, which shall be so blended with or secured to the frame or screen member as to present a neat and attractive appearance, both on and oil of the face, and which at the same time shall be of sufiicient size and so disposed that it may be readily noted and in fact preferably so that it will attract the eye of persons looking at the wearer of goggles equipped with my improvement and will convey to them the intended message, which may be eitherthe name or initial or emblem of the dealer or manufacturer, as is illustrated in Figs. I and III of the drawings, may be an ornamental or fanciful figure, or the like, as shown in Fig. II of the drawings, or may be a club, lodge or other symbol, as shown in Fig. IV of the drawings, or may, in fact, assume a variety of forms, as desired. The only essentials, therefore, are that the device so contained must be contained in a manner to be suitably displayed and must be of such character as to convey the desired idea to the minds of the persons Seeing it.
Referring specifically to the drawings, in
Fig. I we have shown the device to be dis played as consisting of a monogram made up of the letters 0 and A, the monogram designated by the numeral 10 having the O integral with and blending into the portion 8 at the one side and the portion 5 at the other, and the contained A having its ends blended into and integral with the 0 so that the entire outer frame is a single unitary piece and the parts are so blended as to eliminate any projecting corners or the like and thus the liability ofparts not entirely satisfactory to the wearer.
In Fig. ll, we have shown a fanciful figure, or the like, so employed, the figure being connected to the two parts of the shield, as by the supplemental. cross pieces 11, and the several parts in this instance also blending as before mentioned.
In Fig. 111, we have shown a monogram made by combining the letters A O and C, in this instance also the corners or the like being eliminated and the parts being shown as integral with and blended into the frame, although if preferred they could be made separate and suitably attached.
in Fig. IV, we have shown a conventional figure, such as frequently employed by automobile clubs or the like as their symbol, in this instance serving to denote either the producer of the goods, or to denote to other autoists that the person wearing that goggle is a member of the same club as himself, thus being particularly desirable as a neat and ornamental identification device visible when the person is wearing his goggles or eye protectors and when other marks of identification are liable to be hidden beneath the autoing costume.
In addition, however, to the distinctive displaying of a suitable ornamental or advertising device, accomplished through our improvement, we invite attention to the fact that by the use of it we are able to obtain a light, and at the same time extremely strong and durable side shield for a goggle or protector, in that by the the uniting or integral forming of the monogram or other display device with the side members 5 and S, thesaid device serves as a plurality of connecting braces or reinforcing members extending transversely of the open frame,
topics at atcnt be obtained for five cents r and thus resist crushing or other accidental bending of said frame, adding both to its ornamental esthetic value, and to its structural value.
We claim:
1. An advertising novelty in the form of a goggle shield, comprising an open frame, a screen member secured in the frame, and a distinctive display device overlying the screen member and having connection with the sides of the frame for retaining the device in position.
2. An advertising novelty in the form of a goggle shield, comprising an open frame, a display device disposed within the frame and connected to opposite sides thereof, the several parts of the display device being attached one to the other and to the frame side in a manner to eliminate all projecting angles or corners and provide only smooth rounded contacting parts.
3. An advertising novelty in the form of a goggle shield, comprising an open frame, a display device mounted within the open frame and having connection with opposite sides of the frame whereby the connection serves both to retain the display device in position and causes the same to brace the opposite sides of the frame thus connected thereby, and a screen-like backing secured to the frame and disposed beneath the display device for closing the frame and setting off the device thus displayed.
i. An advertising novelty in the form of a goggle shield, comprising an open frame, a display device disposed within the frame connected to opposite sides thereof, the cen tral parts of display device being attached one to the other and to the frame side in a manner to eliminate all projecting angles or corners and provide only smooth rounded contacting parts, and a screen-like backing secured to the frame and disposed beneath the display device for closing the frame and setting oif the device thus displayed.
In testimony whereof we affix our signaturcs in the presence of two witnesses.
