A. F. MCKENZIE.
SAW VISE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY I7. 1917.

ARCHIBALD FINDLAY MCKENZIE, 0F WI-IYTEWOLD, MANITOBA, CANADA.
SAW-VISE.
Application filed May 17, 1917.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, AncHrcAILD FINDLAY hIcKnNzrE, of the village of lVhytewold, in the Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Vises, of which the following is the specification.
The invention relates to a vise particularly adapted for holding saw blades during the sharpening operation and the object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive, sinr ply constructed, easily set up and operated vise for positively holding the saw blade in position.
lVith the above object in view the inven tion consists essentially in a pair of stationary base plates, a pair of plates slidably mounted on the base plates and provided with extending brackets, a clamping jaw extending between the brackets and adjusting levers for manipulating the sliding plates, the parts being arranged and constructed as hereinafter more particularly described and later pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 represents a plan view of my vise as it appears mounted on a bench.
Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view through the upper corner of the bench in a location between the brackets.
Fig. 3 represents a plan view of one of the base plates.
Fig. i represents a front end view of the base plate.
Fig. 5-represents a side view of the lever.
Fig. 6 represents a plan view of one of the sliding plates.
In the drawing like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
1 represents a workbench to the forward side of which I fasten preferably a lengthwise extending wood strip 2 which has the upper edge thereof continuous with the upper face of the bench.
T o the top face of the bench I secure permanently a pair of base plates 3 and twhich are spaced a suitable interval apart depending on the length which the vise is made. Each base plate is substantially rectangular in form and is fastened to the bench by a screw 5 and it is supplied on the top side with an integral upstanding cross strap 6 which provides an opening 7 and forms a guide for a part later described. The strap Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented may 1a, 1918. Serial No. 169,291
is fitted centrally with an elongated vertically disposed opening 8. 9 and 10 represent a pair of sliding plates mounted on the top faces of the base plates and passed through the openings 7 beneath the straps, the said straps operating to guide the plates when moved inwardly or outwardly. The inner ends of the sliding plates are slotted as indicated at 11 to allow of convenient ac cess to the screw and the outer ends of the plates are provided with integral extending more or less V-shaped brackets 12 and 13 which ha ve their ends terminating in horizontally opposing heads 1% disposed opposite the outer face of the strip 2. The bracket heads are connected by a lengthwise extending jaw 15 which has the inner face thereof contained in the vertical plane and directly opposing the outer face of the strip 2.
Each of the sliding plates is provided in a location beneath the straps with a comparatively large circular centrally located vertically disposed opening 16 which lies in each instance above a smaller circular opening 17 provided in each of the base plates. 18 and 19 represent vertically disposed operating pins passed into and through the openings 8, 16 and 17 and fitted each at the opening 16 with a horizontally disposed inwardly extending lug 2 0 which is of a length such that the tip of the lug touches one edge of the opening when the front side of the pin is against the diametrically opposing edge of the opening.
The lower ends of the pins are enlarged to prevent the withdrawal of the pins upwardly, while the upper ends are fixed in the ends of operating levers 21 and 22. The arrangement of the levers in respect to the lugs is such that when the levers are in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the lugs point inwardly. This position of the levers is the in or jamming position of the jaw, while if they are both swung in the direction of the arrows the jaw is released.
It is here explained that as the lever is turned in the direction of the arrows the lugs travel in the openings 16 and in so doing effect the shifting of the sliding plates in a direction away from the bench and consequently cause the jaw to release from the strip.
When the device is to be used the levers are first swung to release position and the saw blade as indicated at 23 is inserted between the jaw and the strip. The levers are then swung in and the saw is jammed in position.
In this action it is to be noted that when the levers are swung hack the jaw is posi tively looked as the lugs reach a dead center position behind the pins.
hat I claim as my invention is In a saw vise a base plate provided with an upstanding cross strap, a sliding plate mounted on the top face of the base plate and passing beneath the strap, a substantially inverted ll-shaped bracketextending Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the from one end of the sliding plate, a pin carried by the base plate and strap and extending through the sliding plate, a lug on the pin and operating Within a circular opening provided in the sliding plate and a lever attached to the pin.
Signed Whytewold, this first day of May, 1917.
