nonsnsnon,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14,1918.
Application mea March 2, 1917. serial No. 151,977.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ANTON MRAKiTscH, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary,'residing at Detroit, in the county of W'ayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Y the object of my invention is to obviate the Y This invention relates to horseshoes, and
necessity of using horseshoe nails for attaching a horseshoe to a hoof. I attain this object by providing a horseshoe composed of articulated side members and a hoof clip that may be easily and quickly placed in engagement with a hoof and clamped thereon, so that the shoe will be iirmly held and cannot be accidentally thrown by a horse. Connected to the side members and other parts of the shoes are novel heel and toe calks, and the shape of the shoe is such that it can be itted to the average shaped hoof of a horse.
My invention will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a top plan of the horseshoe;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the horseshoe;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same; and
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line V-V of Fig. 1.
The horseshoe comprises curved fiat side members 1 having the toe and heel ends lthereof provided with openings 2 and the walls of said openings are screwthreaded to receive the threaded stems 3 of toe calks 4 and heel calks 5. These calks are identical in construction and are shaped to engage surfaces and provide sure footing for a horse. v
The outer side edges of the members 1 are provided with toe clips 6 and heel clips 7 vertical to the plane of the shoe, these clips being shaped and adapted to be bent over or inclined inwardly, either before or after the shoe is placed in position on the hoof,
to engage the side walls of a hoof and retain the shoe thereon.
Between the toe ends of the members 1 is a toe piece 8 having `an upstanding toe clip 9 and lateral apertured lugs 10. The lugs 10 are devoid of screw-threads, as best shown in Fig. 5, so that the threaded stems of the toe calks 4 may extend through the `lugs l0 and thus pivotally connect the toe piece to the toe ends of the members l.
The heel calks 5 have stems thereof ex- Vtending through fiat heads l1 of screw bolts 12 and the apertures of the heads l1 are devoid of screw-threads so that the screw bolts will be pivotally held relative to the heel ends of the members 1. The heads ll have upstanding flanges 13 at the outer sides of the members l, and these flanges prevent lateral swinging movement of the vbolts 12 and relieve the stems of the calks 5 from strains. by a coupling member or nut 14, somewhat similar to a turn buckle, and on the screw bolts are jam or lock-nuts l5 adapted to prevent accidental rotation of the coupling member 14. It is through the medium of this coupling member that the heel ends of the members l may be drawn toward each other to clamp the toe and heel clips against the side walls of a hoof. f
One embodiment of my invention has been illustrated, but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such changes as fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is In a horseshoe, members provided with The screw bolts l2 are connected integral toe and heel clips and having the ment of said screw bolts, said flanges relev- In testimony wliereoi:l I'afx my signature ing the stems of said heel calks of strains n the presence of two witnesses. duo to any Spreading action of said mem- ANTON MRAKITSCH bers, a nut screwed on said screw bolts adapt- 5 ed' for drawing the heelA ends of said mem- Witnesses-z bers toward each' other, and jam-nuts on KARLH.
