Description
MARTIN R. MYERS, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGANF HORSESHOE-CALK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented A r. is, 1918.
Application filed April 19, 1917. Serial No. 163,197.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN R. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoe- Calks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to horseshoes, and more particularly to horseshoe calks, and its principal object is to provide a calk member which is readily applicable to any type of horseshoe, and which is so constructed that lateral strain as well as longitudinal strain will be evenly distributed upon a series of ,calk members when the same is attached to the shoe.
Another object of my invention is to provide a calk which is so attached to a horseshoe by means of bolts extending through the toe and heel lugs of the shoe that all shearing strain on the bolts will be entirely eliminated, and wear and undue strain upon the component part of the calks will be reduced to a minimum.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear from the description, my invention resides in the novel combination, construction, and arrangement of parts to be more fully hereinafter described and claimed and taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a horseshoe constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawing, I have shown my improved calk as applied to an ordinary type of horseshoe H provided with a series of spaced screw-receiving holes 1 to receive therein screws for fastening the shoe to the hoof of the horse, in place of the nails commonly employed. However, I desire it to be understood that my improved calk may be applied to any type of shoe, and I have merely illustrated this form to show one manner of applying my invention.
In detail my improved calk comprises a flat preferably forged steel bar 2 which may is a side elevation of the same;
rolled, Stamped otherwise constructed, and Which is bent at its central portion to provide a flat surface to engage a toe lug 3 of an ordinary horseshoe, and which is extended in divergent side portions 4 and 5 to the rear of the shoe, and bent thereat adjacent the heel lugs 6 of the shoe and extended inwardly to form flanged portions 7 around the outer side and rear faces of the respective heel lugs. I desire to particularly emphasize this construction and disposition of the calk member, and. it will be seen that by this construction, the call; member comprising the bar is extended externally of the heel lugs so as to-receive the outer side faces 8 and rear faces9 of the heel lugs in the bend of the bar at this point which forms the flanges 7. These flanges are continued inwardly and terminate flush with the inner side faces of the adjacent heel lugs, and the lugs and flanges are respectively apertured in alinement to receive bolt members 10 therethrough for securing the calk member or bar to the shoe. By this construction, it will be seen that any lateral strain on the calk member which would tend to have a shearing effect upon the bolt is taken up by the sides 4 and 5 of the calk .member against the outer side faces 8 of the lug, thereby eliminating any possible strain upon the bolt itself.
At the front or toe portion of the shoe, the middle bent ortion of the bar or calk member is formed to engage over the toe lug and also to engage the two side edges of the lug, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, and the lug and bar are suitably provided with apertures to receive therethrough connecting bolt members 11 similar to the connecting bolt members 10 at the heel lugs and flanges.
When in applied position, the calk member will be extended and so disposed on the under surface of the shoeas to form a threesided member having the straight sides 4: and 5 extending from the toe lug to the heel lugs of the shoe and provided with the flattened central portion adjacent the toe lug as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1.
In the manufacture of the bar, it is beveled along its entire length on the portion which is to form the inner side surfaces of the member, and the bar is notched at spaced intervals to provide a series of longitudinally alined integrally formed calks 12 through the entire length of the bar except at the portion of the bar adjacent the toe lugs and the heel lugs respectively, as hereinbefore described. Gwing to this construction, it will be seen that I have provided a calk member whichis constructed of a series of longitudinally disposed alined calks which will prevent all lateral slipping of the shoe, and which is also provided with call: members adjacent the toe and heel lugs of the'shoe to provide for a gripping action of the shoe and take up the longtudinal strain thereupon.
While I have shownand described certain specific details and a certain specific form in this embodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that I do not wish to limit myself to such, but that any changes in the arrangement and detailsof construction may be made as will fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a horseshoe having toe and heel lugs, of a three-sided calk member adapted .to be vsecured thereon, one of the sides of said member engaging the outer fa'cevan'd side edges of the toe lug, the
other two sides of said member having their rear ends bent inwardly to engage the rear iaces and outer side'edges of the heel lugs of the shoe, and means for fastening the calk g outer and rear faces of said heel lugs, and
means extending through said lugs andcalk member for attaching the same to said horseshoe.
In testimony I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
