MICHAEL WALKOS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN,
CIGETTE- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 191%.
Application filed August 17, 1917. Serial no. 186,777.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL WALKOS, a
citizen of Austrian Poland, residing at De-. 'troit, in the county of Wayne and State of smokers articles and aims to providea substitute for cigars or cigarettes. An object of .the present invention. is to provide a neat and attractive article which may be filled with tobacco andsmoked after the manner of a cigar or cigarette andin which the tobacco may be smoked and thoroughly consumed, thereby eliminating waste of discarded cigar and cigarette ends and reducing the liability of fire from the-same.
The invention also comprehends the provision of a novel form of container which includes a smoke filter located therein in position for thepassage of smoke through the mouth piece, preventing the entrance of nicotin into the mouth and insuring a cool and sweet smoke. The invention further contemplates the provision of means whereby the container may be conveniently filled, the closure for the filling opening carrying a compression element which presses the tobacco together to hold it within the container, leaving one end thereof open for lighting purposes.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the following novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in theaccompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a similar view on the line 44 of Fig. 2; and y Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2, showing the cover thrown back to permit of the filling of the container.
Referring to the drawings in detail, similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In illustrating the invention there is shown a container 10 of preferably cylin-' drical form, which is open at both ends, one end thereof being internally threaded as shown at 11, to permit of detachably securing theretoa mouth piece 12. This mouth piece is formed with a reduced threaded end to provide a shoulder 13, against which the threaded end of the container is adapted to abut when the parts are secured in position.
Located within the container adjacent the inner end of the mouth piece 12 is a filter, for the purpose of filtering the smoke as it passes from the burned tobacco into the mouth piece. This filter comprises a filtering element 14, preferably in the form of cotton or analogous material. Located between this filtering element and the inner end of the mouth piece 12 is a fine filtering screen 15, preferably in the form of a wire mesh disk. This screen 15 is held in position between the inner end of the mouth piece 12 and the annular flange 16 formed upon the end of a second screen 17. The screen 17 is preferably in the form of a wooden disk of suitable thickness, which is provided with openings therethrou gh of a relatively larger size than the mesh of the screen 15. The flange of the screen 17 forms a pocket for the filtering element 14, so that this pocket may be filled and placed within the container'in a convenient manner.
By this means smoke from the tobacco consumed within the container 10 passed through the screen 17 and the filtering element 14, the nicotin and other impurities being'removed from the smoke in its passage through this element, the screen 15 serving to hold the element 14 in position and at'the same time permitting this smoke to pass therethrough and to insure a proper draft through the smoke passage 18 of the mouth piece.
As before stated, the container 10 is preferably cylindrical in form, the outer end thereof being open so as to provide for lighting the tobacco within the, container and also insuring aproper draft therethrough. For the purpose of conveniently filling the container, there is formed in the side thereof the longitudinally disposed slot or filling opening-19. This opening extends throughout that portion of the length of the container in which the tobacco is adapted to be placed and is closed by mean of a cover 20, which is hinged to the container alon one of the side edges of the filling openin 19 as shown at 21, the said cover being urther provided with a spring catch 22, which engages over the outturned edge 23 of the said opening. When the cover 20 is closed it forms a continuation of the container cylinder.
In order to suitably compress the tobacco for the purpose of holding it Within the container and of pressing 1t together in a manner to insure its proper burning, the
cover 20 is provided upon the under side thereof with a compression element 24:, in the form of a plate of arcuate cross-sectional shape, which is secured to the underside of the cover and is adapted to extend within the container when the said cover is closed. This will insure an even pressure upon the tobacco throughout the length of the container and prevent the said tobacco from accidentally dropping out.
In assembling the various parts of the device. the strainer 17 has its pocket filled with suitable filtering material and is then placed within the end of the container 10, the compression element 24 acting as a stop for positioning the strainer. The other strainer 15 is then placed against the edges of the flanges forming the said pocket, when the mouth piece 12 may be screwed in position, thereby securely holding the parts associated. By this construction it is an easy matter to remove the various parts for the purpose of cleaning the same and replacing the filtering element.
It is believed that from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and advantages of the invention will be apparent. The right is reserved to make such changes in the form and proportion thereof as will fall within the scope of the claims hereto appended.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A device of the class described comprising a container open at one end and having a longitudinally disposed filling opening therein, a mouth piece secured to said container, a closure for said longitudinally disposed filling opening and a compression element carried by said closure for engage-. ment with the contents of the container.
2. A device of the class described comprising a container open at one end and having a longitudinally disposed filling opening therein, a closure for said opening, a mouth piece secured to the container, a filtering device positioned within the container adjacent said mouth piece/and a compression element carried by the closure and abutting the filtering device to provide a stop for the latter.
3. A device of the class described comprising a container open at one end and having a longitudinally disposed filling opening therein, a closure for said opening, a mouth piece secured to said container, a filtering device positioned within said container adj acent said mouth piece and a longitudinally disposed inwardly projecting compression element carried by said closure.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
MICHAEL WALKOS.
