To all whom t may concern:
yBe it known that I, JOHN MONTGOMERY, (who is a subject of the King of Great Britain,) residing at Toronto, county of York, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Box-Car Doors, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to box car doors and has for its object the creation Ofa perfectly tight door suitable for grain and all products that are usually loaded. loose in a box` car and which ordinarily require that the door shall be supplemented by inside boarding which is usually made of lumber out to lit and nailed in place and which is usually destroyed when the car is unloaded.
Another object of my invention is to provide` a door that will act as usefully in ordinary service as the present storm or outside door and which is especially adapted to be fastened tightly and securely to car posts so that it will not leak. A still further object of my invention is to provide a door which can be liberated from the sealed position with ease whenever it is desired to open the car and one in which warping or springing of the door will not prevent its opening. The door can also be moved to the side of the car in the ordinary manner and be out of the way.
Further details and objects of my invention will be specied in the description thereof and set forth in the claims.

ln the drawings, A represents a door, B the side of the car. C is the mechanism for swinging the door in; D is the operative element locking the door. J, J represent the locking means for the side of the door; J2 that for the bottom. F is a sub-door or observation door and Gr is an inlet adapted to receive a spout or other means for emptying the car. door is attached and travels with friction wheels upon hangers in the usual manner. This is not a part of my invention and therefore need not be particularly described except so far as same is modified to lit the essential features thereof. One hanger, however, is not attached to the door but is attached to an offset revolving shaft C', one portion of said shaft at C2 being journaled in the door and being extended as shown in Fig. l as a crank C3 at the bottom for the purpose of rotating the shaft. At the other side of the door at H the usual hanger friction roller is attached to the door in the usual manner. rl`he track itself is placed at an angle with the car body so that the door as it is slid along the track will pass outside the car body but when closing the edge A will take the position shown in Fig. 2 close in against the door jamb or post which is preferably rabbeted to form an angle in which the edge of the door shall be rmly clamped-as hereinafter described. The opposite edge A2, ordinarily outside of the surface of the car body, as shown in Fig. 2, is carried inward to fit in its 'place by the shafts C2, the upper end of which being attached to the hanger as shown in Fig. 5, and drawn in when turned by means of the crank C3 so that the crank is in a vertical plane parallel with the face of the car body as shown in Fig. 1. The edge of the door A2 is firmly forced into place in a corresponding rabbet in the door post as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. A rotation of the crank C3 will withdraw the door from the position shown and enable it to be slid along the track in a plane parallel with the surface of the outside of the car. As this particular means of closing in and withdrawing doors from their seats is not new or novel, a more H is the track upon which the particular description is unnecessary as it forms no part of my invention.
The invention hereof relates to means in combination with closed-in doors of the type described whereby the door is efectually sealed and held firmly in place and yet may readily be withdrawn whenever necessary. A
To pass to my invention proper:
Upon each door post are mounted vertical plates J, J adjacent to the door. The inner edges of the plates are 4chamfered oli" so that their action upon the door is that of a 'wedge forcing the door inward when they are brought into play, as hereinafter described.
.Each of the plates-has preferably diagonal slots K, K through which they are bolted loosely to the vdoor post, as shown in Fig. l, the-heads of the bolts retaining the plates J, J in position. The plate J has at the bottom of the door an angular extension J2 so that it, with the extension is shaped like an L.v This is also slidably held at the door sill by means of bolts L, L and diagonal slots K, K so that as the side plate is carried inward from the edge of the door the bottom plateis carried also to lthe left and upward over the edge of the bottom of the door, the chamfered edges wedging the door into place and covering the crack, if any, between the edge of the door and the door jamb and also that between the bottom of the door and the door sill, The plate J at the left of Fig. l only extends from the top to bottom of the door,slidably held to the door 'posts by diagonal slots K, K and bolts L, L as shown, so that when raised it is forced toward the door and 'over the crack between the door and the door post, in like manner to that of J In order to provide for the simultaneous movement of the plates J, J and J 2, I have devised an apparatus which consists of a lever D operating by means of a bellcrank and link M and a horizontal bar N. This bar slides` in a horizontal groove and is conined therein. Links P, P connect'with the lowerpart of the plate J 2 and when the apparatus is in open position the links 'are inclined to the vertical. It is obvious that by raising` the lever D the bar N would be moved to the left and the links to a vertical position and force the plates J, J upward. In forcing them upward the slotsy K would compel the side bar Jto pass to the right and the lower bar J 2 could pass over the edge of I' the sill and also over the bottom of the door wedging the door firmly in position.
