Be it known that I, THoMAsSILLs, a resident of 113 Lewis avenue, in the city of Westmount, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, a' subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Grain- Car Doors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same. q I
The invention relates to improvements in a grain car door, as described in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same. r
The invention consists essentially in the novel arrangement and construction of parts, whereby a readily operated locking mechanism is employed for securely holding the door in its closed position, and other means utilized for liftingand transporting said door for storage within the car when out of commission.
The objects of the invention are to devise a door which is a permanent attachment to the car and cannot readily be removed therefrom, to prevent loss 'of grain, to facilitate the opening of the door for dis charging purposes, and generally to provide a comparatively cheap and very durable form of grain car door.

Referring to the drawings, 1 is the wall of the car'having the door opening 2 therethrough, said door opening being framed by the posts 3 and 4, the upper beam 5 and the sill 6. r i 7 and 8 are vertical slots at each side of the door opening, contiguous to, or in, the
posts 8 and 4, said slots having the linings 9 and 10 of sheet metal.
11 is the door formed with the vertical slot 12 in one of its side edges.
.13 is a metal plate binding over the opposite vertical edge from the slot 12 and extending inwardly of the door on the outer and inner sides thereof, and having centrally in relation to said side edge, the jutting piece 14, said jutting piece extending into the vertical slot 8 and said binding plate secured to the door by the rivets 15.
16is a locking plate having the reduced upper end 17 and the reduced lower end 18, the lever holes 19 and the distance piece holes 20, said locking plate 16 being introduced into the vertical slot 12, and in the open position of the door sliding to the extreme inner wall of said slot 12 and in the closed position of the door, extending into the vertical slot 7. i
21 are distance pieces extending across the slot 12 and through the door from said slot to the door surface.
22 and 23 are cover plates having the j ournal orifices 24 and 25, each journal orifice 24 registering with the journal orifice 25 through corresponding holes in the door extending across the slot 12. i
It will now be seen that the door 11 has on' one side edge a jutting piece extending from top to bottom thereof into the slot- 8, thus firmly holding that side of the door to the car, while the locking plate 16, in the closed position of the door extends beyondthe other side edge into the slot 7, said locking plate 16 being supported in said slot 12 by the distance pieces 21, and said distancepieces 21 being firmly fastened in place between the said cover plates 22 and 23 by the bolts or rivets 26.

The operation of the locking plate will now be readily understood. As the rotary levers 27 are turned by a suitable key wrench, the action brings the cam extension to one or the other side of the lever holes 19, said cam extension thusengaging said locking plate and sliding it in the vertical slot 12, either inwardly or outwardly as the ease'may be. In sliding it inwardly, the door is unlocked and the grain will pour out from weight alone, and in sliding it out wardly, the said locking plate will project into the slot 7 and hold the door firmly locked against the weight of the grain.
35 is a bracket secured to the door 11 'centrally at the upper end thereof, said bracket having the eye 36 projectingbeyond the upper edge of the door.
37 1s a lever having the eye hole 38 at the lower end thereof. and the eye hole 39 intermediate of the length thereof.
40 is a chain connecting the eye 36 with the eye 38, thus forming a connection between the door and the lever.
41 is a trolley track extending along the inner wall of the car above the door-way 2,
and beyond said door-way toward the end 7 wall of thecar, said track having the downwardly extending flange 42 at the outer end thereof.

44 is a trolley hanger having the retaining flange 45 extending upwardly inside of the flange 42, and the pin 46, on which the wheels 43 are journaled, said hanger at the lower end having the eye 47 joined to the eye 39 by the chain 48.

The advantages .'of this invention are many, but the chief features are. the locking mechanism and thetransport means for storage, however, many of thedetails are also very important as in construct-ion'they save considerable expense.
The steel door shown in the drawinggis simply another means; for manufacturing this invention and, of course, in that-particular form, some of the details as described are'eliminated as the entire metal construction renders it necessary, but it is notdesirable to lengthen out this specification by describing' a great many different forms, as the salient features have already been mentioned generally.-
What I claim as my invention is In a grain car door, the combination with the car body having adoor opening in the side thereof and vertical recesses in the frame of said door opening, of a door having a permanent piece extending into one of said vertical recesses at one side and at the other side a vertical slot registering with the other vertical recess. ,-in :door frame, in-
