My invention relates to clothes pins and the primary object thereof resides in the provision of a device of this character embodying novel means for retaining an article on a line, novel guiding means being also provided for facilitating the application of the pin about an article which is on the clothes line. f

Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a novel lug on one of the clamping arms for cooperation with the other of the clamping arms in retaining an article on a line and reducing the accidental displacement of the article from the line to a minimum.

A further object of my invention resides in the provision of a deviceof the character described that is simple in construction, eflicient in operation andone that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a mini- 7 mum cost.

Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate like and corresponding parts throughout the different views, I provide a clothes pin formed from a single piece of wire, that is preferably alvanized to prevent rust from accumulatlng on the articles of clothes when they are hung on the line. In forming the clothes pin, I have bent the wire intermediate its ends to provide acoil 1 which has a spring action, the said coil having a resilient clamping arm 2 and a resilient clamping arm 3 extending therefrom. Thearm 2 is longer than the arm 3 and bent as indicated by the numeral 4 in a plane at right angles to the plane of the coil 1 and then bent upon itself to providea substan tially oval-shaped loop 5. The other arm is arranged in spaced'parallel relation with the plane of the looped arm 5 and substantially intermediate the sides of the loop, the lower end of which arm is benttoward and arranged slightly within the plane of the looped arm to provide a retaining ln 6. The extreme free end of this arm w ich continues from the lug is extended outwardly at an acute angle with respect to the arm to provide a guide 7 which is arranged in substantially divergent relation to the guide ,8 provided by bending the looped end outwardly as illustrated to advantage in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings.

The operation of this invention is as follows: t i

'Assuming that it is desired to clamp an article of clothes on a line, the coil 1 is engaged by one hand to the guides 7 and 8 arranged upon the article of clothes when the article is on the line. When in this position, by exerting a downward pressure on the pin, the arms 2 and 3 will be forced away from each other and the pin will be slid downwardly until the coil is arranged about the clothes engagin the line. When in this position, the sprmg action of the coilon the resilient clamping arms, causes the In 6 to extend slightly within the plane 0 the looped arm 2, pressing the article of clothes between the loop and consequently preventing accidental displacement of the clothes from the line. The guides 7 and 8, especially the former, are elongated, so as to reduce the tearing of clothes to a minimum, when using the pin.

Although I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that I am not to be limited to the exact details shown, however, I desire that great stress be laid upon the arrangement and the cooperation between the arms extending from the coil as well as the guiding means on the arms.

From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it can be easily seen that I have provided a device that is simple in construction, canarrangement. of parts may be made Within the scopeof the appended claims and Without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A clothes in comprising a single piece of wire f orme intermediate its ends with a resilient butt-joint open ring, having sub stantially parallel clamping arms extending from the ends of the ring, an ovoidally shaped loop formed on: one of'the arms,v a lug formed on and adjacent one end, of. the

other arm, said lug being adapted to normally extend slightly within the plane of the loop to cooperate with the said loop for clamping an article therebetween, and

presenting diverging. guides formed on the arms for facilitating the application of the pin to a clothes line, said clothes line being adapted to passbetween the arms of the pin" Copies of this patent may be obtained for and to normally lie within the ring when the pin is applied thereto, said rin further loeingv adapted to: encircle an artic e looped over the clothes line.

2-. As a new article of manufacture, a

'cl'othes pin formed of a single piece of resilient' wire with a split ring intermediate its ends serving as, a clothes-line engaging and supporting portion and from which extend arms, one of said arms having a' por-' tion thereof recurved to form a loop turned at right angles to thes'plitring so that the aXis of the. loop is in the same plane as the ring, the other arm. extending approximately parallel to the loop andshaving its free end formed with a projection that nor-' mally lies within the loop, said split ring being adapted to encircle and engage with an article looped over a clothes line Whilethe arms clamp another portion of the article therebetween, said ring further serving as a support; for retaining the pin in an operative relation to the line and against accidental displacement.
