COMBINED NUT-LOCK AND SWAB-PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented liiiay "J, 191.
Application filed June 29, 1917. Serial No. 177,765.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER V. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Nut-Locks and Swab-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined nut lock and swab protector, more particularly adapted for use on steam pumps as employed on locomotives.
It has heretofore been proposed to employ a device of the above character composed of hinged sections adapted to be operated by handles, but with this construction, it has in some cases been found diflicult to open the hinged sections wide enough to provide sufficient clearance to permit the installation of the device in position. A
The principal object of my invention is to provide a swab protector. adapted to overcome the above difliculty by constructing the same of three sections hinged together so as to produce a wider opening when the handles are manipulated.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a side elevation of a combined nut lock and swab protector embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a front elevation thereof; and Fig. 3 a plan view thereof, showing the hinged sections in open position.
As shown in the drawing, the construction may comprise three sections 1, 2 and 3 adapted when closed to form a cylin er, the sections 1 and 3 being hinged to the section 2.
The sections 1 and 3 are supported by handles 4 and 5 secured thereto and pivotally mounted on hinge pins 6 and surrounding the hinge pins 6 are coil springs 7 tending to move and hold the sections 1 and 3 in their closed position.
' Within the sections 1 and 3 are arranged vertical ribs 8 adapted to engage in the usual slots for the spanner wrench, provided in obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. Q.
the gland nuts 9 of the pump, so as to serve as a nut lock to prevent turning of the not when the device is in operation.
The upper edge 10 of the sectionsl, 2, and 3 is turned inwardly to form a ledge adapted to rest on top of the projections 11 of the upper gland nut 9 so as to hold the protector in position vertically.
When it is desired to apply the swab protector, the handles 1 and 5 are grasped and brought together, so as to open the hinged sections 1 and 3, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The protector is then slipped into position on the pump, with the ledge 10 resting on the projections 11 of the gland nut 9. Upon release of the handles, the springs 7 cause the collapse of the sections 1 and 3, so that the swab and pump piston rod are completely inclosed, the ribs 8 engaging in the grooves of the upper and lower gland nuts, to serve as nut locks.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. A swab protector comprising a main section and two other sections hinged to the main section to form a cylindrical protector.
2. A swab protector comprising a main section, two other sections hinged to the main section to form a cylinder, and handles for operating the hinged sections.
3. A swab protector comprising a. main section, two other sections hinged to the main section to form a cylinder, and handles secured to .the hinged sections for operating the same.
4. A swab protector comprising a main section, two other sections hinged to the main section to form a cylinder, handles secured to the hinged sections, and springs tending to move the hinged sections to their closed position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
WALTER V. TURNER.
