--Be it known that I, JOHN J. Dauer, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county ot Miami and State ot' Ohio, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Oil-Cans, of which the following is aspeciication.
This invention relates `to new and use ful `improvements in oil cans.
The primary obje-ct of the invention resides in the provision of an oil can which will. be of such construction that the contents oit' the same may be dispensed under pressure through the curved spout, thereby especially adapting the can for use in oiling or lubricating parts of automobile engines and the like which cannot be readily reached by means of an ordinary oil can.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of an oil canot' the above stated character which will be ot simple construction and operation, composed of the minimum number of parts and highly etlicient in use. v
For a further object, the invention contemplates the provision of an oil can of this character in which the piston or plunger` will be resiliently retained in the lower portion of the main can and the latter also resiliently retained in the upper portion of the auxiliary or supporting can, turning of the main can within the outer can being prevented by means oi' a handle carried by said main can.
lith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature ot the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawin` roi-ming a part ot' this application, l have shown a longitudinal section ot the device with the upper portion of the main can andthe discharged spout in elevation, a portion of the latter being removed.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, 1 designates the main can which includes a body portion and an upper portion 2 mou-nted thereon and having a curved discharged spout 3 extended from its upper central portion. The upper portion 2 of the main can is also provided with a filling opening i having a cap 5 secured therein. A handle 6 of lconventional form is provided upon the main can 1 and is preferablyv formed feta bail having its ends turnedback and se.T cured to the body of the main can 1 and-,the upper portion 2 thereof, thereby positioning the handle -6 in a vertical plane. The lower end ot' the body of the main can 1 is open and exterior threads T are formed around the same to receive the correspondingly threaded flange 8 of the bottom member 9 employed` for closing the bottom of the main can 1. l f
A secondary or supporting` can 10 is provided-tor the main can 1 and said main can is supported in the secondary or outer 4can 1() by means of the plunger rod 11, having its lower end extended through the upwardly odset central portion 12 of the bottom 13 ot the Vcan 10 and binding nuts 14E threaded upon said central rod 11 for engagement with the upper and lower` faces of the oil set portion of said bottom 13.` The lower bindingnut 14 as well as the lower extrenr ity ot' the central plunger rod 11, rests in the pocket 15 formed under. the bottom 13 by offsetting the portion 12, as will b rt dily understood by referring to ther The plunger rod 11 extends thrctgi the bottom member 9 of the main can 1 and has a suitable plunger 16 mounted upon its upper end within said main can 1 and secured in position by suitable binding nuts 17, threaded upon the upper extremity of the plunger rod 11. A suitable packing 18 is secured upon the bottom member 9 by means of a flanged ring 19, around the plunger 11 to prevent escape of the contents of the can l, should any of the same pass below theA plunger 16.
An inverted conical spring 20 is positioned around the plunger rod 11 and has its small lower end engaged against the ring 19 while its larger upper end bears against the under face of the plunger 1G, exerting pressure upon the latter to retain the same in spaced relation with' the bottom member 9. The helical spring 21 is also mounted upon the plunger rod 11 and has one end bearing against the under tace of the bottom member 9 while its opposite end bears against the upper binding nut 14.
It will be seen that the spring 21 serves to resiliently retain the main can 1 in the upper portion of the supporting outer can 10. hen the main can is held by the handle 6 however, and pressure exerted upon the los bottom of the auxiliary or outer supporting can 10 to force the same toward the main can l against the tension of the spring 21, the plunger 16 is forced to move toward the upper or outer end of the main can l and force the contents of the same out through the discharged spout 3 under pressure. It
will also be understood that the springs 20 and 21 serve as cushioning springs for the plunger 16 and the main can l, respectively. It will further be understood that a guide slot 22 is formed in the upper end of the auxiliary or supporting outer can 10 for the handle 6 and when the main can 1 is in normal position within the can 10, the handle 6 projects slightly into the slot 2Q', thereby preventing'independent rotation of the cans l and l0.
TWhile the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless vto be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim- 1. A dispensing can, including a supporting cylinder closed at its lower end, a can body vertically movable in said cylinder and equipped at its upper end with a delivery spout, said cylinder having the central portion of its lower end raised, a vertical plunger rod having its lower end extended downwardly through said raised portion and its upper end extending upwardly through the bottom of said can body, a plunger secured upon the upper end of said rod and movable in said can body, nuts secured upon the lower end of said rod and engaging opposite faces of said raised portion, and a spring encircling said rod and confined between the bottom of said can body and the upper face of said raised portion.
2. A dispensing can, including a cylinder open at its upper end and closed at its lower end, a can body vertically movable in said cylinder and equipped at its upper end with a delivery spout, a removable bottom closing the lower end of said can body, a vertical plunger rod having its lower end extended through the closed end of said cylinder and its upper end extended upwardly through the removable bottom of said can body, a plunger removably secured upon the upper end of said rod and movable in said can body, nuts threaded upon the lower end of said rod and engaging opposite sides of the lower closed end of said cylinder, and a spring encircling said rod and engaging the removable bottom of said can body to retain the latter in an elevated position adjacent the upper end of the cylinder.
