To all whom t may concern citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and 'State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Fixtures, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to 'an electric fixture for casings to inclose operating mechanisms, and although particularl. adapted for use in connection with liquid ispensi'ng pumps, it may have a more general use wherever applicable.
The invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of the parts. A
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a side elevation of an inclosing casing to which a fixture of this type is applicable.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the fixture in one position; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the fixture in an extended position.
This application is a division of my application for dispensing apparatus filed 0ctober 15, 1914, Serial No. 866,759, which has matured into Patent 1,248,606, dated December 4, 1917. i
Y In the type of casing to which the present invention is applicable it is desirable to provide a construction which permits a signal lamp to be lighted and remain so whether the movable portion of the casing is in raised or lowered position. To accomplish this result itis necessary that suitable provisions be made between the lixed and movable parts which will not only accommodate the connecting means, but also will insure that the connecting means will be returned and maintained in the same collapsed condition when the movable casing part is closed.
In the present invention the fixture is applied to an inclosing casing which comprises a fixed portion 1 and a movable portion 2. Secured to the fixed portion by means of supporting rods or pipes 3 is a guide plate 4 which is preferably smaller in cross-section than the casing portion 1 to accommodate a reduced upward extension 5 of the movable portion of the casing. This reduced portion 5 lits over the plate 4 and incloses it when the movable portion of the casing is either in raised or lowered position.
At the top of the reduced portion 5 is a fitting "6 which has an outer 'retaining flange 7 in which the edge of a globe 8 is seated, and fastening screws 9 are inserted through the flange against the globe, `or against `,an interposed material 10 for holding the globe in place. This fitting also has a hollow central portion 11 extending above the flange to which a threaded stem 1Q is secured by lock nuts 13 and 14, and supported on the stem is a socket 15 for an electric lamp 16.
Connected through the plate 4 by means of one of the pipes 3 is an electric connection 17 extending from a source of supply through the support to the lamp 16. The electrical connection is preferably in the form of a coil, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2, and at intervals along the connection are fastened one or more flexible straps 18 of leather, or other suitable material which hold the connection 17 in both its extended and collapsed positions. When the movable portion of the casing is in its lowered position the portions of the Hexible members between their fastened points form loops which extend outside or inside of the coil, as shown in Fig. 2. The extremities of the flexible members 18 are secured to the lplate 4 and to the projection 11 of the lit-` tangled, and also insure that it occupies the minimum space when in a collapsed condition.
In operation the movable portion of the casing may be raised or lowered at will, and the electrical connection 17 is correspondingly distended` or collapsed and held in proper position. The lamp 16 is lighted by a switch at some other point and no attention need be given to any slidable or moving contacts in order to insure that the lamp may be kept lighted whether the casing is in raised or lowered position.
1. In an electric fixture, the combination with a fixed supporting plate, of a casing slidable thereon and adapted to be raised and lowered, a limp coiled electrical connection extensible between the plate and casing but forming no mechanical connection between them, and means comprising parallel flexible straps attached to corresponding points of adjacent coils and suspending and conlining the electrical connection between them, the portions of the straps between the attachment points being folded inwardly between the coils when the connection is collapsed.4
2. In an electric fixture, the combination` the straps looping within the coils when the electrical connection is collapsed.
3. The combination with a xed support-- ing plate, of a slidable casing adapted to be moved up and down on the plate, an electric lamp carried by theicasing, a coiledlimp electric connection extensible between the lamp and plate to permit movement of the casing, and means including parallel flexible members attached to corresponding parts of the coils to hold the electric connection in place.
4. The combination with a iixed supporting plate, of a slidable casing adapted to be moved up and down on the plate, an electric lamp carried by the casing, and a ilexible limp electric connection from the lamp to the plate havingno rigidity but extensible to permit movement of the casing.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speciication, on this 17th day of October, A. D. 1917.
