To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. BRADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Falls, in the county of Blackhawk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double- Acting Stanchions, of which the following is a production.
My invention belongs to that general class of devices known as stanchions, and particularly cattle stanchions. The invention has among its objects the production of a device of the kind described that is simple, convenient, durable, compact, efficient and satisfactory, for use whenever found applicable. It has particularly as an object the production of a double acting stanchion, that is, one in which the upper ends of the stanchion members are both movable to open the stanchion or close the same. One of the advantages of having double acting stanchions is that stop bars, as they are commonly known, are unnecessary. Other objects and advantages of the construction herein described will appear to those skilled in the art to which the same pertains.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of. parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

For the purpose of fully illustrating the application and advantages of the construe tion, I have shown a portion of a stall, consisting of a to bar 1, side members 2 and 3, and curb 4, 1t being understood that this is merely for illustration, as the stanchion may he need with any style or type of stall construction. The stanchion consists of the two stanchion members or bars 5 and 6 spaced apart, their ends being preferably brought together at the top and bottom. The lower ends are shown provided with members 7 which are pivotally secured or hinged together at 8, it being understood that any equivalent construction may be employed at the lower end of the stanchion members. The upper ends are preferably provided with members 9 and 10, having extending parts 11 and 12. The extending parts 11 and 12 are arranged within a tubular head or supporting bar 1 1:, which is formed with an opening or slot 15 on the under side, and provided with guides at each side thereof lengthwise the bar. The head bar 14 may be provided with a supporting eye 16, which may be secured to the top part 1 of the stall frame by the link and eye 17 or equivalent means. It will be noted by referring particularly to Figs. 4- and 5, that the extending parts 11 are flanged as at 11, or so as to overlie the guides at each side of the slot 15, the parts being slidable to permit the stanchion members to be moved to either of their two extreme positions, closed and open, as indicated in the full and dotted lines in Fig. 1.
- To mamtain the stanchion members in closed position, I provide a latch of any suitable form or its equivalent. The latching mechanism shown consists of a latching member 20, pivotally secured at 21 to the part 10, and rranged to engage a lug 19 on the part 9. For convenience in controlling or operating the latch, I provide an extending part 22, and if desired, a spring 23, or the equivalent, may be employed for normally maintaining the latch in operative engaging position.
Arranged within the head bar 14 is substantially an endless cable 24, which is arranged to run over the sheaves or small pulleys 27 and 28, arranged one at each end of the head bar 14. As shown, the cable or flexible member 2 1 is crossed between the pulleys 27 and 28, one side being secured to the extension by a fastener 25, or its equivalent, and the other to the part 12 by a fastener 26, or its equivalent, the arrangement being such that as one stanchion memher is moved in either direction the other, stanchion member is simultaneously moved in the opposite direction. By crossing the cable, as shown, I secure the advantage that the lower runs or sections may be connected to the extensions so that the upper runs or sections are free'and away from frictional engagement with said extensions.
In use, assuming that the stanchion is closed as shown in Fig. l or 2, and it is desired to open the same to release the stock held thereby. The latch is operated to disengage with the lug 19. Either of the stanc'zhion members may then be moved in a direction to openthe same, and this movement is transmitted through the cable to the other stanchion member, moving that in the 15 7 one, both are opened.

Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing. from the spirit of my invention;

,What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with, a of stanca of this patent may be obtained for chion members adapted to open and close toward and from each other, said members having extensions at one end thereof, a hollow bar into which said extensions project and longitudinally of which they may slide, and a cable mounted and inclosed within said hollow bar having oppositely movable portions respectively fastened to said extensions at points preventing rubbing engagement of the extensions with the remainder of the cable.
2. The combination with a pair of stanchion members adapted to open and close toward and from each other, said members having extensions at one end thereof, a hollow bar into which said extensions project and longitudinally of which they may slide, and a cable mounted and inclosed within said hollow bar having oppositely movable lower portions respectively fastened to said extensions, said cable being endless and provided with guides at the oppo site ends of the hollow bar and crossed centrally of the hollow bar to position the secured extensions of the stanchion members in said central position when said members are closed, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination with stanchion men1- bers connected to open and close toward and from each other, of a hollow approximately straight bar, the stanchion members having extensions projecting into said bar, cable means mounted and inclosed in said hollow bar and having lower sections connected to said extensions to move the stanchion members in opposite directions, the connections between the stanchion members being such that the same will swing in their opening and closing movements, and means for suspending the device in a manner to permit such swinging while permitting the extensions to slide in the hollow bar.
