Be it known that I, WALTER ItossnLL Sine, a citizen'of the United States, residing at Waterloo, in the county of Blackhawk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back-Filling Machines, of which the following is a description.
My invention belongs to that general class of devices known as back filling machines, and relates particularly to that class of devices for filling trenches and excavations. It is particularly desirable that a machine of this kind shall be as light as possible, so as to insure portability, but at the same time to be strong and rigid in order to withstand the hard usage usually given a machine of this class. It is particularly desirable also that the machine be capable of lling a considerable amount of trench, ditch, or excavation without moving the machine along, and yet pull the scraper from the straight true line upon which the cables are wound. The invention has among its objects the production of a machine of the kind described that will possess the advantages referred to, and that shall be simple, convenient, durable, efficient, and satisfactory in use, .and not likely to turn turtle or easily get outv of order. Further objects and advantages in the device will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure hereinafter given.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim. Y Y

Referring to the drawings, V1, 1 represent suitable skids mounted on trucks, consisting of the axles 2 and wheels 3 at the rear, and the front axle l and wheels 5 at the forward end. The forward ends of the skids are connected by the part 6 and pivotcd to the axle,
so that the front wheels and axle may be turned to steer the device. As shown, the axle part d is pivotally secured to the part 6 at 6', the skids or frame being strengthened and braced by the parts 8 and 9, or their equivalents for the purpose, the whole forming a main frame. The truck may also be provided with a tongue Z of any suitable construction, by means of which the front wheels may be turned to steer the device, or the truck may be drawn ahead. The frame is preferably unders'lung, as shown, so as to lower the center of gravity, and make the device less liable to overturn. Mounted on the skids is what may be termed a turntable base part 10, which carries a cooperating turntable lpart l1, the same being pivotally secured in place by a bolt l2, or equivalent means for the purpose. The turntable parts 10 and 11 are preferably of considerable area and carry skids'l, 15, which may be suitably connected and braced by the cross parts 16, forming a second or auxiliary frame. As shown, the skids 15 are secured to and carried by the turntable part 11, so that the same may be turned at any desired angle. Mounted on the skids 15 is a suitable source of power, as for example, a gas engine, electricmotor, or the like, which is arranged to drive a. suitable drum. As shown, bearing members 1G are carried-by each skid, the same carrying a shaft 18, upon which is mounted a drum 17, suitable means being provided for operatively connecting the shaft and drum. As shown, I provide a clutch 19, arranged to be controlled by rod 31, and handle or lever 32, it being understood, however, that any type of clutch mechanism may be employed, and hence I have not shown the same in detail. I have illustrated a gas engine 23, 22 being the crank shaft of the same and 24C the usual fly wheels. Power may be transmitted from the gas engine or source of power by a sprocket chain 21 running over the sprocket wheel 20, or in an equivalent manner. rlfhe drum is shown providedV with the usual brake band 25, controlled by a aart 26, which may be connected through a ell-crank 27, 28 and rod 29, to a controlling lever 30. Carried by the frame or skids is a frame 33, 34, which carries a pair of spaced rollers 35 (see Figs. 3 and 4). These rollers are adapted to guide the cable on to the drum,

The drum shaft 18 is provided With a nigger head' 37, from which may pass a cable 38. As shown, 40 is a bracket pro- ,.vided With a sheave 39, over which the cable 38 extends in moving the machine.

when the turntable is locked in position and the cable snubbed around the nigger head, the machine can be moved ahead until it is in the desired location, 4when the cable istaken oil the nigger head. By attaching the cable to the tongue thel machine is guided Without the help of an eXtra man.
Any type of scraper may be used with this machine, preferably one of the flat type of Well known construction, as it Will push a considerably more dirt than the ordinary slip scraper. noperation the machine is placed uponone side of the ditch or trench land the scraper on the other, the drawing cable 36 being attached to the scraper and extended over the drum. The scraper is drawn to the trench, pushing the dirt therein, then the scraper may be carried back for another load, the brakes being released so that Vthe drinn `can run free. Having thus describedk my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modi fic-ations may bem-ade iii the same without departing from the spirit o my invention; hence I do not ivish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shoivn and described, or uses mentioned.
What I claim as neiv and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination in a back filling machine of the kind described oi a main iframe having supporting ivheels therefor arranged at the rear end and supporting wheels arranged at the front end and pivotally connected therewith, a turn-table part arranged on said frame, a cooperating turn-table part rotatably mounted on said first part, an auxiliary frame carried by said cope 'ating turn-table part, said auxiliary frame provided ivith a drum projecting at one side thereof, a sheave carried by said auxiliary frame at one side adjacent said projecting drum part, said sheave disposed substantially in a line and extending transversely the auxiliary frame at the center oi pivotal connection of said rotatable turn-table part, whereby when said part is rotated the sheave may be broughtsubstantially in alinement with the center line of the main frame, a second sheave provided with means for securing the saine to a fixed part in ad- Vance of the machine, and a cable extended about said drum and through said first mentioned sheave and thence through the seeond mentioned sheave, and operatively connected with said front Wheels.
