Speecation of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 3&191.
Application led May 23, 1917. Serial No. 170,452.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN N. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wooster, in the county of Wayne, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention `relates to toys, particularly of that character which are known as talking boards.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply arranged and constructed device for use in making so called spirit readers,77 or for telling fortunes. With this object in view, I have provided a swinging board or base with `which is associated a slidable element which constitutes an indicator, and is controlled by the hands or fingers of an operator or operators.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plain view of the device,
F ig. 2 is a longitudinal section,
Fig. 8 is a transverse section, and,
Fig. 4; is a side elevation of the indicator device.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, l indicates a base which forms the bottom of a receptacle having the low and side end walls 2, the upper face of the hase l is provided with a smooth plane surface over which a movable element or rider 3 may progress with ease. Extended longitudinally across the receptable, and having its ends rested upon the end walls thereof, :is a board or platform 4t which is provided with the longitudinal slot 5 which extends practically throughout the length of the platform. The upper face of the platform,
Iupon both sides of the slot 5, is provided with a duplicate series of characters 6 which may consist of the letters of the alphabet, numbers, or words and phrases, or a combination cf all of these.
The rider 3 consists of a base of suitable extent to provide an even and easily moved support which is carried by the slide pieces or feet 7 the latter permitting the rider to slide freely over the base 1. yThe base of the rider extends transversely below the platform t, and at its ends is enlarged into the heads 8 which stand free of the platform t, and are suitably conformed to provide convenient resting places for the fingers or hands of operators. Rising from the center of the rider base is the standard 9 which projects through the slot 5 and above the latter terminates in a transverse extended head 10 which not only holds the rider in permanent engagement with the slot 5, but is tapered at both ends so as to rpoint the characters as the rider is moved to and fro from the slot 5.
The device is used in an obvious manner, the operators sitting upon opposite sides of the board, and resting the fingers or the hands upon the heads 8, the movement of the rider transversely of the board bringing the indicator head 10 into chance indicating position over the character 6 in successive relation to spell out or indicate the socalled cfortune of the operators.
The device which has been described provides a very simple and inexpensive one, which may be constructed for wide distribution.
What lf claiin as my invention is z- A device of the character described, comprising in combination, a shallow structure having a plane surfaced base board, a longitudinal indicator platform carried in spaced relation to the base board and having indieating characters thereon, said platform having a longitudinal slot throughout its length, a rider movable over the base board and below the platform, enlarged operating heads projecting from opposite ends of the rider and clearing the platform, a standard on the rider projecting through the slot, and an indicator head on the upper end of "the standard over-lying the platform in indicating relation to the characters on the latter.
ln testimony whereof, I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
