Description
M. L. BATTLE.
Lamp-Snuffer and Extinguisher.
Patented May 7,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
MARCUS L. BATTLE, OF BAINBRIDGE, GEORGIA.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,437, dated May 7, 1872.
Specification describinganew and Improved Lamp-Snuli'er and Extinguisher, invented by MARCUS L. BATTLE, of Bainbridge, in the county of Decatur and State of Georgia.
My invention consists in the application, to a snuffing-blade, of an extinguishing-plate, by hinging it to the rear edge of said smilingblade in such manner that it will swing down on its hinge out of the way and allow the snuffer to swing clear of the flame.
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a lamptop, showing the application of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, showing a top view of the snuft'er and extinguisher when in the position for extinguishing the lamp; and Fig. 3 is a top View of the wicktube, snuffer, and extinguisher, showing the positions when the lamp is burning.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the su uffing-blade, which is mounted on the top of the vertical portion B of a cranked wire, pivoted near one of the narrow sides of the wick-tube, in the vertical plane of the largest diameter of said tube, and having a handle portion, 0, projecting outward from the base of the lamp-top suitably for swinging the blade over the top of the tube and back again for snuffm g it when required, the wick being first drawn down slightly, so that only the completely-burned portion will be snuffed ofl'. D is the extinguisher, which consists of a little plate hinged to the rear of the plate A, and curved on the other edge, so that when the snufi'er-plate is moved over the top of the tube it will swing upward, unobstructed by the cone of the burner, to the horizontal plane of the snuft'er and be moved over the flame-so as to extinguish it; and when the snufl'er is moved back the said extinguisher will swing down again, so as not to strike against the cone or the supports thereof, and thereby obstruct the complete withdrawal of the snufier.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An extinguisher, D, hinged to the snufler A, substantially as specified.
MARCUS L. BATTLE.
