To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDM ND M. BEND HEIM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Repairing Motion Picture Films, of which the following is a specification. a
This invention relates to an apparatus of novel construction for repairing a motion picture film, by cutting out a portion of the film, preparing the ends of the two severed sections, overlapping said ends, and cementing such ends to each other. With an apparatus of this kind, the reatest accuracy is required, any shifting of the film sections is to be avoided, and an exact alinement of the perforations in said sections is to be obtained. By my invention, all these conditions are complied with, buckling of the film is prevented, and a joint of great strength and smoothness is obtained, so that the joined negative film may be fed through a printing'machine, or the repaired positive film may be run through a projector at the great speed required during the printing or displaying of the pictures.

At the end of this inclined section, there is aifixed to a bed plate 7 which is secured to table3 by screws 4 and 8, 'and forms part thereof, a horizontal, transversely extending preferably reversible shearing member 9, coacting with one of a pair of cutting blades hereinafter referred to. To the right of shearing member 9, table 3 is provided with a transversely extending depression 10 that is flush with said member and thence slopes uowardly from left to right. The right half of table 3 supports a longitudinally movable slide or platen 11, furnished with two rows ofparallel bosses 12, that are also adapted to engage the perforations of the film, said slide being sunk into the body of the table so as to be flush therewith the surface of the slide being there-fore, placed on a higher level than the surface of shearing member 9, while its raceway or sunk portion of the table is so limited that the slide can only be moved inward or outward to a limited extent. Slide 36 is operated by a lever 39 pivoted to frame 1 at L0 and having an elongated slot a1, engaged by'a pin 42 that extends through and projects below the slide. The latter is provided at its left hand end with an upward extension. 36 which is T shaped in cross section and is guided within a longitudinal slotted raceway as of plate 3, said extension bemg'sunk slightly below the level of the table. By the means described, the slide is so guided during its movement both at its bottom and top, that vertical and lateral play is obviated, and a true restricted rectilinear movement is insured. The outer end of the spring enters a slot formed in the outer member or handle of lever 39, to which it is attached by a screw 18. Lever 39 plays within a clearance formed between slide 36 (to the left of extension 36) and bridge 27, and protrudes through a slot 49 formed in frame 1 said slot having upper and lower beveled ed es. This slot opens at its left end into a notch 50, into which the lever 39 may be sprung, so as to thereby lock slide 36 in its retracted position. it will be seen that by manipulating the lever, slide 36., and consequently eccentric 3st, will be longitudinally reciprocated, and that thereby the desired transverse reciprocating movement is imparted to the slide 30 (and consequently to file 28) by means of pin Between the inner shearing edges of mem bers 9 and 28, there is mounted on table 3, between depression 10 and the right hand slope thereof, a pair of transversely alined teeth 51 (Fig. 18) which are of triangularform in cross section, each tooth having a pair of fiat parallel sides 51 an inclined edge 51 facing slide 11, and a vertical edge 51 facing the left hand or fixed portion of the table. Teeth 51 are likewise CClltQlCt between the two cutting blades hereinafter referred to and are alined longitudinally with the bosses 5 and 12, so that by projecting the teeth through perforations in the damaged or other part of the film, to be re moved, the film will be centered so that the proper cut will be insured. By providing the teeth with inclined right hand edge, the edge and the sprocket holes of the right hand portion of the severed film, will during the subsequent inward movement of slide 11 be enabled to ride freely over the teeth, so as not to become caught thereby. Besides assuming the function of properly locating the out, teeth 51 by engaging perforations in the right hand portion of the severed lilm, assumo the additional function of locking su .i d portion in posit-ion after the same has been lapped over the left hand portion, and while the seam is being cemented. In proximity to teeth 51 there is provided, an ejector 552 which has for its purpose to lift the discarded part of the film from the table, and assumes the additional function of raising, whenever necessary, the right hand section of the film 01f the table to an extent sullicient to clear the teeth. This ejector is shown to consist of a substantially U-shaped length of wire turning in a rear bearing 53,
rocable, a-knife carrier or block 102 which is guided within the frame by means of tongues 103 engaging corresponding grooves of end plates 98. The knife carrier is operated-by means of a double thread screw 104 having a long pitch and threaded into top plate 99. The lower end of screw 104 carries a disk 105 rotatable within block 102,
and furnished with a centering pin106 entering the block. Screw 104is held to the block by means of an annulus 107 through which it passes, and which is fastened to the block in suitable manner. To the upper end 1 of screw 104 is keyed a winged nut 108, by
means of which it may be turned. Against both faces of block 102 are placed cutting blades 109 (Fig. 17) the lower ends of which pass through the cutter heads, and are of table 3, will first puncture the center of the film (wherethe film is strongest) and will thence extend the out gradually toward the two edges of the film (where the film is weakest, owing to the presence of the sprocket holes) so. that 'a' cleantransverse cut is obtained, and any tearing along the ners with apertured extensions 115 (Fi edges of the film is prevented. The two blades 109 which are spaced by block 102, in
the manner described, are shown to be removably connected to the latter by means of a clamp 112, carrying a number of prongs 113 that pass through alined openings of said blades and block. The protruding end of one of these prongs is threaded'for the reception of a winged nut 114 that is centered within the opening of that side plate 97 which faces clamp 60. In this way, the nut' is readily accessible for clamping the blades109 to the block 102, and for removing them therefrom. 7
Table 3 is provided at its two'rear corb 16) adapted to receive wells or bottles 116 one of which contains cement while the other contains a prepared alkaline water. Each bottle has a threaded neck, engaged by an apertured threaded cap, by means of which the bottle is suspended. The bottles are furnished with plugs 118, through which pass brushes or similar applying devices 119.
The operation is as'follows: The film 120 (Fig. 12) to be repaired is placed upon the table'in such a manner that the portion 121 to be removed, is engaged by the centering teeth 51 while the left and right portions of the film are engaged respectively by the fixed bosses 5 and the movable bosses 12 of slide 11. Both clamps 59 and 60 are lowered and locked to the table, whereby the clamp 59 owing to its bottom dip and the cooperating inclined table section 6, will force the intervening film section downward, so that that portion which extends beyond the right hand edge of clamp 59 will be gradually depressed. Section 122 which overlies shearing member 9 is moistened with an alkaline water, and slide 66, 68 is manipulated to reciprocate blade 70 over said section 122, thereby removing the sensitized emulsion and the gloss. The blade is so set as to be flush with the depressed section 10 of table 3, so that, at the ends of its stroke (or in its inert positions) it will be, by the slightly raised surface of the table, placed under tension,
. which is maintained by the blade during its movement over the section 122 of the film supported on shearing member 9. The rear edge of depression 10 is set on an oblique angle to the axis of the table, (Fig. 1), so that in this way, the blade may readily ride from the table surface onto said section 122. The cutter head 61 is lowered upon the table and locked, the lower flare 011 base 93 serving to hold the film taut during filing and cutting, the slide 36 is manipulated by handle 39, to reciprocate file 28 along the under side of the film section 123 which overlies said-file, whereby the latter is cleaned and roughened. Screw 104 is turned to lower blades 109 and thus cut out section 121 between the previously prepared sections 122 and 123, and then the screw is turned in the opposite direction to raise the blades. The cutter head is thrown back, and the ejector 52 is raised to correspondingly elevate the severed section 121, and thus facilitate its manual removal. Lever 13 is swung through part of its course to bring the edge of right hand film section 124 against teeth 51. Cement is applied to the scraped section 122, ejector 52 is again manipulated to assure the free passage of section 124 over teeth 51, and lever 13 is swung through the balance of its path, whereby slide 12 will advance section 124, to such an extent, that section 123 will overlie section 122. The ejector 52 is released and presser foot is swung down and locked by lever 75, whereby sections 122 and 123 are tightly pressed against each other while the cement is set ting to make joint 125. After the cement has set, lever 75 is swung back, to release presser foot 85, the latter is thrown up by spring 86, and both of clamps 59 and G0 are opened, which completes the operation.
I claim:

A film repairing apparatus comprisinc-aces ing a table, a shearing member and a transversely movable file carried thereby, said file having an upper roughened face adapted: to engage the lower side of the film and a cutter head having a pair of spaced cutlower side of'the film and a pair of cutting blades cooperating respectively with said shearing member and file.
3. A film repairing apparatus comprising a table, having a series of fixed bosses, a slide having a series of bosses, an ejector interposed between the fixed bosses and the slide front and rear hearings in which said ejector is adapted to turn, said ejector being provided with a U-shaped section intermediate said bearings.

A film repairing apparatus comprising means for scraping a section of film transverselyalong its uppei side, means forfiling. a section of said film transversely along its lower side, means for cutting the filnr between itsscraped section and its filed sec tion, and means for superimposing said filed section over said scraped: section.
9.x A film repairing apparatus comprising means for centering a. film, means for scraping a section of the filnr transversely along its upper side, means for filing a section of the film transversely along its lower side, means for cutting the filnr between its scraped section and its filed section, means for ejecting the severed portion ofthe film,
and means for superimposing the filed: section over the scraped section.

Al film repairing apparatus comprising a table having an inclined section adapted to support a portion of a film, a slide adapted to support a different portion of said film, said slidebeing'arrangedi at a higher level than the lower part of the inclined section, and means for cutting the film intermediate said inclined section and said slide.

A film repairing apparatus comprising a frame having a slot and a communicating notch, a file reciprocable across said frame, said file having an upper roughened face adapted to engage the lower side of the film, a longitudinally movable slide operatively connected to said file, a bipartite lever pivoted to the frame and operatively connected to the slide, said lever having an inner member pivoted to the frame, an outer member adapted to engage said slot and notch, and a spring connecting said inner member to said outer member.
18. A film repairing apparatus comprising a frame, two rows of fixed bosses, and two rows of movable bosses carried thereby, and a pair of centering teeth interposed between said fixed bosses and movable bosses, said teeth having a pair of flat sides and being provided with inclined edges that face the movable bosses.
19. A film repairing apparatus comprising a frame, two rows of fixed bosses, and
two rows of movable bosses carried thereby, and a pair of centering teeth interposed between said fixed bosses and movable bosses, said teeth having a pair of flat sides, upright edges that face the fixed bosses and inclined edges that face the movable bosses.
20. A film repairing apparatus comprising a frame having a groove, two rows of fixed bosses and two rows of movable bosses carried by said frame, and a U-shaped ejector pivoted to said frame intermediate said fixed bosses and movable bosses, and adapted to engage said groove.
21. A film repairing apparatus comprising a frame, two opposed sets of bosses carried thereby, a U-shaped ejector pivoted to said frameintermediate'said sets, a spring engaging said ejector, and means for limiting the rotation of the ejector.
22. A film repairing apparatus comprising a frame, a longitudinally slotted clamp hinged thereto, said clamp having a beveled top, a guide rod movable within the slot, a dovetailed head guided on said beveledv top, a headed screw connecting said guide rod to said head, a holder carried by the head, and a scraping blade engaging the holder.
23. A film repairing apparatus comprising a frame having an inclined section, a shearing member mounted on the frame at the bottom of said inclined section, a clamp hinged to the frame and having an inclined bottom coincident with the dip of said inclined section, and a scraping blade carried by the slide and adapted to cooperate with said shearing member.
24. A film repairing apparatus comprising a frame, a first clamp hinged thereto, said clamp being formed of an upper section and a lower section which is spaced from the upper section to form a clearance, a locking lever pivoted to said clamp within said clearance, a second clamp hinged to the rame, and a presser foot hinged to said second clamp and adapted to be engaged by said locking lever.
25. A film repairing apparatus comprising a frame having an inclined section, a
first clamp hinged thereto,said clamp being formed of an upper section and a spaced lower section, said lower section having an inclined bottom that coincides with said inclined frame-section, a slide carried by the upper section, a scraping blade carried by the slide, a locking lever pivoted to the clamp intermediate its upper and lower sections, a second clamp hinged to the frame, and a presser foot hinged to said second clamp and adapted to be engaged by said locking lever.
26. A film repairing apparatus comprising a frame, an apertured shearin member carried thereby, a clamp hinged to the frame, a presser foot hinged to the clamp, said presser foot having pins adapted to engage the apertured shearing member.
27. A film repairing apparatus comprising a frame, a first clamp hinged thereto, a locking member fulcrumed to said clamp, a second clamp likewise hinged to the frame, and a presser foot hinged to said second clamp, said presser foot having an arched head adapted to be engaged by said locking member.
28. A film repairing apparatus omprising a table having two rows of bosses, a pair of clamps adapted to be projected across the table over said bosses, a scraper carried by one of said clamps, a cutter head movable relatively to the table, nd a pair of spaced cutting blades carried by the cutter head, said blades having V-shaped cutting edges, that are adapted to be projected transversely across said rows of bosses.
29. A film repairing apparatus, comprising a table having two rows of bosses, a pair of clamps adapted to be projected across the table over said bosses, a scraper carried by one of said clamps, a cutter head hinged to the table, and a pair of spaced reversible cutting blades carried by the cutter head, said blades having a pair of V-shaped cutting edges, and being adapted to be projected transversely across said rows of bosses.
30. A film repairing apparatus comprising a table having filln retaining means, a pair of clamps adapted to be projected across the table over said film retaining means, a scraper carried by one of said clamps, a cutter headhinged to the table and having a pair of open sides, a carrier movable within the cutter head, and a pair of spaced parallel blades secured to the carrier.
31. A film repairing apparatus comprising a table having film retaining means, a pair of clamps adapted to be projected across the table ove said film retaining means, a scraper carried by one of said clamps, a cutter head hinged to the table and having a pair of open sides, a carrier slidable within the cutter head, a pair of spaced blades removably secured tothe carrier, and a screw tapped into the cutter head and engaging the carrier. 7
32. A film repairing apparatus comprising a table having film retaining means, a pair of clamps adapted to be projected across the table over said film retaining means, a scraper carried by one of said clamps, a cutter head having open sides and hinged to the table, a carrier, means for guiding the carrier within the cutter head, a screw tapped into the cutter headand engaging the carrier, a pair of parallel blades having V- shaped cutting edges, and a clamp for securing said blades to opposite sides of said carrier.
33. A film repairing apparatus comprisin a table, having fixed bosses, a slide carrie by the table and having alined bosses, a centering tooth and an ejector, intermediate the fixed bosses and the slide, a pair of clamps hinged to the table, a presser foot hinged to one of said clamps, a coacting locking member carried by the other clamp, a cutter head hinged to the table intermediate the clamps and a pair of spaced cutting blades carried by the cutter head.

A film repairing apparatus comprising a table having a depression, a shearing member sunk into the table flush with said depression and adapted to support a film section, a clamp hinged to the table, a slide carried by the clamp and a resilient blade carried by the slide, said blade being adapted to be passed obliquely from the surface of the table over said film section, whereby said blade is placed under tension.
35. A film repairing apparatus comprising a table having an inclined section, a file fiush with the table, and a cutter head hinged to the table and having a flaring base which is adapted to engage the inclined table section.
