To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM H. Ramsey, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Curtain-Stick Machine, of which the following is a specificationj The present invention relates to improvements in curtain stick machines, this particular machine being an improvementupon the U. S. Letters Patent No. 549,747, dated November 12, 1895, the improvement residing in the simplification of the machine therein shown, whereby the curtain stick is more quickly and firmly secured in the ends of the curtain or shade, due to the elimination of the objectionable features of said patent ed structure and the. addition of means whereby the vertically movable and swing ing member or blade is readily operated from the front of the machine to maintain the sticks of the curtain in therelative position during the fastening of the end of the curtain thereto.

ing blade, a horizontally movable finishing blade, and a vertically disposed transversely swingable and movable presser blade or bar, which is limited in its transverse movement and retained at'all times relatively to the machine. 1

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a base having stationary means carried thereby to coact with three blades to receive the sticks and assist in fold ing the curtain or shade about the said stick to produce a secure fastening of the stick to the curtain or shade. 1

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it beingunderstood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed withoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention.

In thedrawings-Figure 1 is a top plan view of the complete machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are detail views howing the three main steps necessary in attaching the sticks to the curtain or shade material. Fig. 7 is a detail cross section through the lower end of a curtain or shade with the stick attached thereto by the present machine.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the baseof the machine,which has uprising therefrom at two ends thereof, the two inverted U-shaped metal uprights 2, whose upper portions are secured to the under side of the transverse bars 33, and

. Connected to the under side of the crosshead 5 intermediate of its ends and projecting forwardly thereof, are a plurality of L shaped arms 9, braced by the plate 10, the

short outer terminals of which have connected thereto, the presser blade 11, the purpose of which will presently appear.

. In order to manipulate the cross-head and the presser blade relatively to the base of the machine, a handle 12 is connected to the upper face of the cross head 5 and projects forwardly and in parallel with the center L-shaped arm, the same being braced thereto, by means of the bracing plate 13, the vertical postl and the upper bracing plate 15, said bracing plate 15 being connected to such handle and to the cross-head '5, as clearly illustrated. By this means, the

presser blade may be moved transversely between the bars 3- 3, and may be tilted rearwardly and above said bars to permit of the introduction and removal of the sticks Y and shade before and after the fastening of the sticks thereto. It will be noted that the gripping portion of the handle is disposed forwardly of the base, and is therefore in ready access for movement of the blade 11 tnansversely of the base or vertically away therefrom, thus placing the same at the ready disposal of the operator, and in a more convenient position than in the struc- 7 posed strip 25, the recess or space 26 longitudinally of the machine.

Secured to the inclined portion 20 of the bed 18 by means of a pin and slot 2728, is a longitudinally and inwardly movable folding blade 29, while secured by the pin and slot connection 3031 to the strips 25 upon the base is the oppositely moving finishing blade 32. These blades have the same movement and operation, as the blades shown in the patent heretofore mentioned, and are provided respectively with the operating handles 34 and 35, which are pivoted at 33 to the base of the machine. The lever 34 is provided with an operating handle 36, while the lever 35 is provided with an operating handle 37, said levers being connected to their res oective blades through the medium of the linlrs 3S and .39, respectively, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1.

The operation of the blades 11, 29 and 32, are identical with the blades illustrated in the patent before mentioned, but the construction of the curtain stick device, as clearly shown in Fig. 7 is difierent and dispenses with the use of a cord therein. In this case, the sticks 40 and 40 are provided with the flush or parallel opposed faces 41, the lower rounded edges 42 thereof, forming when the two sticks are assembled, and with the outer wall thereof, a substantially elliptical form. It will thus be seen, that with the present machine, the construction and operation of the device as compared with that shown in the before mentioned atent,

In order, however, to set forth the operation of the present machine, the detail fastening of the sticks 4040 .within the end of the curtain shade material is as follows: The fabric composing the shade is led in from the rear under the presser bar 11 and drawn upon the folding'plateto the back of the raised bed, where it isheld in place by one hand while the first part of the stick 40, is placed with its rounding face bearing the shadedownward upon the recess and itsbeveled edge .uppermost'and remote from the operator. The presser bar 11 then turned upon the stick to hold it in position.

The first lever operating the first folding blade 29 is then moved to the right releasing the first fold with the first part of the stick 40.. 2. A machine of this character, including a base, a frame carried thereby,-a folding and a finishing blade mounted for move:-

ment to and from each other upon the base,

and a presser blade mounted in the frame for transverse sliding movement and for vertical swinging movement [relatively to the base, said base being provided with parallel stick and shade receiving means one to each of the first two blades, whereby the fpresser blade maybe disposedabove either one at a time to assist in holding the shade and stick in position.

3. A machine of this character, including a base, said base being provided with two parallel recesses longitudinally thereof, a frame carried transversely of the base, a folding blade for movement to and from one of the recessed portions, a finishing blade movable to and from the other remaining recessed portion of the base, and a presser blade mounted in the frame for transverse movement relatively to the recessed portions of the base, and for vertical swinging movement to and from the base.

4. A machine of this character, including a base, said base being provided with two parallel recesses longitudinally thereof, a frame carried transversely of the base, a folding blade for movement to and from one of the recessed portions, a finishing blade movable to and from the other remaining recessed portion of the base, a presser blade mounted in the frame for transverse movement relatively to the recessed portions of the base, and for vertical swinging movement to and from the base, and cooperating means carried by the presser blade and the frame for limiting the vertical movement of the blade away from the base.

5. A machine of this character, including a base, a frame carried thereby, a folding blade and a finishing blade mounted for movement toward each other, a bar mounted for transverse and vertical swinging movement in the frame above the base, a handle projecting outwardly therefrom and normally substantially at right angles to the base, and a presser blade carried by said bar and disposed downwardly at right angles thereto for coactive action with the folding and finishing blades.

A machine of this character, including Copies of this patent may be obtained for a base, two bars mounted above the base and transversely thereof, said bars being disposed in parallel, two longitudinally disposed blades mounted upon the base, said blades being disposed to move transversely of the base, two handles, one to each blade for operating the blades, a cross head disposed between the bars and capable of a limited transverse movement above the base and a swinging movement to and from the base, a presser blade connected to and carried by the cross head, said presser blade being disposed at right angles and below the cross head for engagement with the base, and a handle disposed to project normally at right angles to the base connected to the cross head for manipulating the cross head and presser blade.

7. A machine of this character, including a base, two bars mounted above the base and transversely thereof, said bars being disposed in parallel, two longitudinally disposed blades mounted upon the base, said blades being disposed to move transversely of the base, two handles, one to each blade for operating the blade, a cross head disposed'between the bars and capable of a limited movement above the base and a swinging movement to and from the base, a presser blade connected to and carried by the cross head, said presser blade being disposed at right angles to and below the cross head for engagement with the base, a handle disposed to project normally at right angles to the base connected to the cross head for manipulating the cross head and presser blade, and means connected to the bar and disposed in the path of the cross head for limiting the movement of the cross head away from the base.

8. In a machine of this character, the combination with a base, a frame carried thereby, a folding blade and a finishing blade mounted upon the base for movement toward and away from each other, a cross head, headed pins carried thereby and forming an axis for the cross head, said headed pins being journaled in the frame for transverse sliding movement and swinging movement to and from the base, a handle for operating the cross head, and a presser blade carried by the cross head for coaction with the folding and finishing blades.
