COLON C. STEWART, 01E BERKLEY, VIRGINIA;
COLLAPSIBLE BED-TRAY.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pat gntgdl Apr, 23, 1918,
Application filetl September 12, 1917. Serial No. 191,041.
attached to a bed and combined with means for holding it in convenient reach of the person lying on the bed, and when not in use to support said tray in vertical position along-side the bed where it will not be in the way.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a series of pivoted and slotted links whereby thetray may be swung into operative and inoperative position and supported in said positions and to provide a drawer for the table with simple means of supporting the same in the table and at the same time connecting the table to the supporting links.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and eficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which c Figure 1 is an end view with parts in section, showing the table in position above a bed.
Fig. 2 is a like view with the table in folded position.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the table.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of a clip for securing the table to the supporting members.
In these figures 1 represents the table which may be made of any suitable form and of any desired material and said table is provided with the side flanges 2. I provide a drawer 3 for said table which is designed to slide between the side flanges 2. I pro vide a novel form of clip for forming guideways for the drawer and at the same time providing means for pivot-ing the table to the supporting links. As shown in the detail view, this'clip 4 consists of a rectangle portion 5 provided with perforations through which suitable rivets pass for riveting the clip to the flange of the table. This clip is provided with a perforated earor lug 6 projecting downwardly from the member 5 and on each side of said lug are tabs 7, said tabs being adapted to be bent at right angles below the bottom of the drawer to form supports for the same while the lug 6 is left in its extended position to receive the ends of the supporting links 8 and the braces 9 which have their ends pivoted to said lugs. I prefer to utilize a pair of supports 8, which are located one at each side of the table and said supports have their lower ends pivoted to'one of the side rails 10 of the bed. The brace 9 has its lower end provided with a slot 11 which is located adjacent the lower edge of said brace and said slot begins at a point substantially mid-way of the ends of the brace to adjacent the lower end thereof where said slot is provided with a hooked end, said hook being formed by a curved portion having its end extending parallel to 7 links with the bed rail by means of a pair of shoes 13. Each of said shoes is provided with a horizontal leg 14 having a hooked end which is adapted to engage with the horizontal member of the angle iron forming the bed rail and said shoe is also provided with a vertical leg 15 for engaging with the vertical part of the angle iron. To make said shoes so that they can be easily attached and detached from the bed rail I prefer to provide the leg 15 with a hinged lower part 16 having a hook end adapted to engage with the lower edge of the bed rail and I provide said member with a suitable spring to hold it in engagement with said rail. Each shoe is provided has each end extending beyond the front of. each shoe.
said end so as to prevent the links from moving on their pivots. When the table is to beswungiinto inoperative position it is simply necessary to raise the front edge thereof slightly so as to move the braces on the" pivot pins '12 to throw said pins into the long portions of the slots 11. Thiswill permit the table to be swung downwardly,
the braces 9 moving into parallel position with the supports. The supporting links are then moved longitudinally to disengage the slots2O from the bent ends of the rod. '19 thereby permitting the supporting links to be swung downwardly on their pivots 17 and thus move the deviceinto verticalposih tion along-side the bed, asshown in Fig.
2. Lpreferto roundeofl' thelower' end of each linkand to extend a part beyond the 7 A slot 20 is formed in the lower end of each supporting link to receive slot 20.to facilitate the engagement of said 'slotwith the rod 19.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
Idesire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the severalparts, provided that such changes fallwithin the scope of the appended claim.
hat I claim is A device of the class described comprising a table, supporting links pivoted thereto, braces pivoted to the table and having slotted engagement with the supporting links, a pair of shoes removably connected with the bed rail, pivot pins carried by said shoes and engaging slots formed in the ends of the links, and a rod connecting the shoes together and having its ends extended to engage notches cut in the ends of the links.
in testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
