My invention relates to improvements in luminous door knobs, and the object of my invention is to provide a door mob which shall embody luminous portions thereby to enable one readily to find said door knob in the darkness of night, said door knob being associated with the latch ofa door in such manner that it may be turned by ones hand to actuate said latch in the operation of opening said door.
ll accomplish this object by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein' Figure 1 is a view in vertical mid-section on broken line 1, l of Fig. 2, showing a door knob embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation of the same, certain parts of which are shown with fragments thereof removed; and
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the same on broken line3, 3 of Fig. 1.
'Referring to the drawings throughout which like reference numerals indicate like parts, in Fig. l is shown the rearward portion 4 and the frontward portion 5 which comprise separable metal portions of a hollow door knob.
The rearward ortion 4 is provided with an integral cylind central portion of which extends longitudinally a hole, of square cross-section, within which is fitted one end portion of a shaft 7 i of a door latch not shown, which shaft 7 is of square cross-section as shown in Fig. 3.

For the sake of clearness, l[ have shown t frontward portion-5 as being separated from the rearward portion 4.
' The frontward portion 5 is of annular form and is prov1ded with an externally screw threaded flange 11 which is adapted to screw into the internally screw-threaded db 5 being formed to rovide two space annular shoulders 12 an 13 against each of which is disposed a circular glass plate like a watch crystal, as glass plates 14 and. 15 respectively, which glass plates 14 and 15 are secured in their respective positions by fillets 16 and 17 respectively of putty or other form ofcement.
Disposed to be clamped between the shoulder 10 and the annular face of the flange ll of the portion-5, is the flan e 18 of a cup-like member 19 whose wal corresponds in shape to the inner surface of the portion 4L which meer serves as a removable lining of said inner surface. a
The interior surface of the cup-like member 19 may be coated with a phosphorescent paintthat is self luminous to such degree as will cause rays of light to be projected. through the glassesll and,15,, which rays h light will be perceptible in the darkness of night thus to indicate the location of the door knob, or preferably the space between: the two glass plates 14 and 15 may be filled with a mass of phosphorescent paste that is sumciently self luminous to project rays of light through the glass plate 15, thereby to make observable the location of the door knob in spite of surrounding darmess.
In practice it is found that a mass of phosphorescent paste disposed between the glass plates 14 and 15 will retain its luminosity for a longer time than will phosphorescent aint when applied to the inner surner surface can be more easily repainted with such phosphorescent paint than can be renewed t e phosphorescent paste that is. disposed between the glass plates 14 and 15.
If desired, only the outer surfaceof thetut inner glass plate 14 may be, ainted with phos horescent paint to make t e door mob self uminous, or only the inner side of the outer plate 15 may be so painted, but in out the dltitlvlfl 1140b main self luminous for shorter period of time.
In case phosphorescent paint is applied to the inner surface of the cup-like. member 19 to supply luminous rays of light then, in such ca'se, the glass plate 14 may be omitted,
such glass confined within the space between the two glass plates 14 and 15. p
Obviously, changes may be made in the forms, dimensions and arrangement of parts of my lnvention without departing from the spirit thereof.
What I claim is:
1. A door knob of the class described, which embodies two separable portions, the rearward oneof which is hollow and provided with a rearwardly extending cylindrical part that has a hole of square crosssection extending therethrough and the circular wall of which rearward one flares outl l being necessary only when 3-. mass of phosphorescent material is to be rearward ward portion; two circular glass circular edge portion of each 0 which is fastened against adifieren't one of said annular shoulders; and a lining of sheet metal removably disposed against the inner surface of the circular wall of said rearward one of said separable portions.
2. A door knob of the class described, which embodies two separable portions, the rearward one of which is hollow and provided with a rearwardly extending cylindrical part that has a hole of square cross-section extending therethrough and the circulaws, the
lar wall of which rearward one flares outwardly to terminate in an internally screwthreaded flange, and the frontward one of whichseparable portions is of annular form and provided with two spaced annular shoulders on its internal surface and with an externally screw-threaded annular flange which is removably disposed within said internally screw-threaded flange of said plates, the circular edge portion of each of which is fastened against a diflerent one of said annular shoulders.
