An object of the present invention is'to provide a package of this character with an attachment Which may be carried as a part thereof, and which may be manipulated for loosening the material packed toadmit of the ready removal thereof. l

The invention further aims at the pr0- vision of a relatively small and economically constructed and applied attachment for tobacco cans and the like which may be carried -'in the can between the inner wall thereof and the wrapper or lining placed in the-can about the compressed material, and which is flexibly connected to the can to admit of the withdrawal of the attachment and the free manipulation thereof to loosen the material, particularly when the package or can is partly emptied.

The above, and various other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part described, and in part understood, from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustated in the accompanying drawing wherein:

Figure l is a perspective view of a tobacco can open, showing the attachment of this invention applied thereto and applied to the material for loosening the same.

The body or container Afis provided with a liner E in the form of a wrapper adapted to contain the material 13. 7 The attachment is in the form of a prod 10 which may comprise a length of'relatively stiff wire pointed atone end, as at 11, and being flattened and perforated at its opposite end 12 to receiveone end of a: cord 13, or other flexible member'which is provided with a knot 14 adapted to'hold the cord from removal from the end 12.

The opposite end of the cord 13"is prefer I ablythreaded through an opening formed in the cover 0, and the latter is preferably depressed at such point to provide a seator pocket 15 for the reception of a kn'ot16 w hich is formed upon said opposite end of the cord 13 for retaining thelatter from withdrawal from the cover'C. Preferably,

the seat 15 with the aperturein the bottom I thereof is formed intermediate the ends and lateral edges of the cover C, 'and'th'e sealing strip D is pasted or otherwise suitably secured over the cover G in the usual manner, and over the seat 15 and the knot 16, to inclose the latter and prevent the accidental raising of the knot 16 out of the seat.

The prod 10 is of a length equal substantially to the height of the boX or body A, and is adapted to beplaced thereinbetween the inner wall of the body and the adjacent side of the liner E, with the apertured end 12 of the prod at the upper end of the receptacle. The cord 13 is looped upon itself and placed ontop of the liner E immediately beneath the cover G, as shown in Fig. 2, and the free end of the cord 13 may be projected downwardly into the receptacle A between the wall thereof and the adjacent side of the liner E, as shown in Fig. 2, for the purpose of'distributing the cord through the package, and to prevent tangling of the same at the top.

When the sealing strip D isbroken and the cover C is raised, the user may grasp the looped part of the cord 13 and draw the same upwardly to remove the prod 10 from the package. The prod 10 may now be grasped in the hand in any suitable manner, as shown in Fig. 1, and the point 11 thereof applied to the packed material for loosening the same. The prod 10 is of especial advantage when the packed material B is partially consumed so that access to the lower end. of the can cannot be readily had by the finger or ordinary instrument manipulated freely for loosening the packed material, and cannot be lost or detached from the can The prod 10 is adapted to be inserted back into the can A after use, and the flexible cord 13 affords a ready I means for drawing the prod upwardly from between the adjacent walls of the can and the lining E.

It is of course understood that the prod 10 may be given any suitable shape or form found desirable in the manufacture and packing thereof, and any suitable flexible connector may be employed without departing from the spirit of this invention, and being restricted only by the scope of the following claims:

1. The combination with a can, a wrapper therein adapted to contain packed material, a cover to close the can, and a sealing strip secured to the can over the cover, of a prod adapted for insertion in the can between the same and the wrapper and being of a length to lie wholly within the can beneath the cover when closed, a cord secured at one end to the prod, said cord extending at its other end through the cover from the inner side thereof and being knotted with the knots lying beneath the sealing strip, said cord when the cover is closed being adapted to lie between the top of the wrapper and the can, and the cover when opened being adapted to raise the end of the cord for easy grasping to withdraw the prod.

2. A device as specified comprising a can adapted to contain a wrapper with packed material therein, a cover adapted to close the open end of the can and provided intermediate-1y with a depressed apertured seat, a cord engaging at one end through the aperture in the cover and provided with a knot adapted to fit into said seat, asealing strip adapted for securemen't over the cover and 7 over said seat to inclose the knot and hold Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
