Application filed January v12, 1917.
To all whom t may concer/lt:
Be it known that I, Lantana F. STUPECKY, a citizen oi' the United States, and a, resident of Manitowoc` vin the county of Manitowoc and State of `i`i/'isconsin, have invented a new and improved Carburetor, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description. The object of theinvention is to provide a new and improved carburetor arranged to automatically control the mixture ot air and gasolene vapors according to the speed of the engine thus, rendering the carburetor exceedingly economic: l when in use and insuring the formation ot a correct explosive mixture under varying speeds of the engine.
ln order to accomplish the desired result, use is made ot' a needle valve provided with an auxiliary air supplyv normally closed hy the liquid `fuel in the well of the carburetor and opened on a. apid consumption ot' the liquid fuel in the well in case the engine is running at a high speed.
A practical emhodinient ot the invention is rei'nesented in the accompanying drawings 'forming a part ot this specification, in which Similar characters ot rc erence indicate corresponding parte lin both views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a carbureter provided with the improved needle valve, parte being shown in Section; and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional elevation "ot the needle valve.
The carburetor illustrated in Fig. 1 is of a standard type, and'eonsists essentially 'ot a reservoir 1l) containing the liquid itnel, such as gasolenc, and connected hy an orii'ice 11 with a feed well 12 opening into the mixing chamber 13, connected at one end with. an air supply and at the other end with the manifold ot' the internal combustion engine to supply the li tter with an explosive mixture. The oriiicall is controlled hy the point 11i of a needle nut 1li and provided at its upper end with Vto permit or' conveniently turnA ing the needle valve to cause its point/l? to open the orifice 11 more or less with a view to insure the desired tlow ot liquid fuel jfrom. the reservoir into the well 12.
The noodle valve i@ provided with au auxiliary air suppl); more especially designed for admitting air to the feed well 12 in case the liquid therein is consumed in excess ot the amount supplied 'by way. ot the orifice 11 valve 15 screwing in the Specification of Letters Patent. pmtentgd APL 155, ggaju Serial No. 141,964.
and the needle valve 1l, that is, at the time the engine isrunning at l'iigher rate of speed than normal speed. rlihe auxiliary air supply on the needle valve 15 is preferably formed by making the needle valve hollow to provide a duct 18 into the upper end or which open. ports 19 leading to the atmos phere. The lower end ot the paseage 18 is provided with a series of apertures 20 an range-d one-above the other and extending within the well 1Q` ae will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1. 1t will he no ticcd that when Ythe amount of liquid fuel in the well 12decreaseeowing to a rapi consumption ot" such fuel then the upper most oi the apertiu'es 9.0. is uncoveredand consequently air can pass by way ot the passage 18 into the well 1'2 and .into thel mixture, thus renderingthe same lean. In case the engine speed remains high the further rapid consumption of gaseous fuel in the well 12 causes the next following aperture 20 to loe uncovered, and so on, to supply more air to the well and thus render the explosive mixture correspondingly leaner. On the re duction of the -epeed ot 1Q gradually lills again with liquid fuel which latter then gradually covers the apertures 2O until all are sealed by the liquid fuel.
The air supplied to the passage 18 ie prei craloly pre-heated, and ior this purpose the ports 19 open int-o a casing 21 held on the upper end ot the needle valve 15, plainly shown in Fig. 1. The casing; 21 is connected with one end of au air supply tube'QQ, pret erahly Wound around the exhaust pipe 2B of the internal combustion engine on which the carburetor is used eo that the air passing through the pipe is heated prior to pase-f inge; into the passage 18 and the well 12.
It ie'underatood that hy tlie'use ot the hot air supplied to the 'feed well 12 a rapid evaporation ot' the liquid t'uel is obtained. lt is also understood that 'the air readily flows through the passage 18 as Soon as the uppermoet aperture 20 is uncovered owing,` to the suetion action o1 the engine.
Havingr thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- l. ln a carbureter, a needle valve for rogulating the tuel provided with a longitudinal air passage, a casing; mounted upon the nee* die valve to admit of the latter moving-there! the engine, the well lill) in and in oinmunication with the air passage ther fof, and a pipe connected with said easing for suppying hiid thereto.
2. En a cnrburetei', a ne controlling needie valve having a longitudinal nix. passage nffhefeiii und e interni opening nem* its outer end eading from said passage, a, easing mounted upon the valve without interfering with its free movement and in communication with the air passage thereof through the interni opening, and a pipe connected with the easing for supplying Huid thereto.
