Description

W. MILLS & W. MORGAN FUSE AND THE LIKE FOR GBENADES, PROJECTILES, LAND MINES, AND THE LIKE.
APPLICATION FILED DEC.23. I916.
Patented Apr. 16, 1918.
L earns WILLIAM MILLS, OE'BIRMINGHAM, AND WILLIAM autonomy, or BRIsToL, ENGLAN l i 1 SAID MORGAN ASSIGNORVTO SAID iurL s EN onnron.
FUSE AND THE LIKE non GRENADES, PROJECTILES, LAND-MINES, AND THELIKE.
1 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM and WILLIAM MORGAN, subjectsof the King of Great Britain, residing at Bridge street west,
Birmingham, in the county of Warwick, I England, and 45 Westbury road, Bristohin the county of Gloucester, England, respectively, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in or Relatingto Fuses and the i like [for Grenades, Projectiles, Land-Mines, andthe like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprises certain improvements in or relatingto fuses and the like for grenades, projectiles, land mines, and the l ke, and it has for its purpose to better protect Bi ckford type cord and like fuses from "atmospheric conditions and to reduce the possibility of mis-fire to a minimum. With this object in view the fuse end and the in- I flammable part thereof, is waterproofed and the waterproofing is efiected in such a manner that the firing and combustion ofthe fuse is improved. With this object in view we employ a waterproofing material which is of a highly inflammable character.
In a convenient embodiment of the present invention, .we prepare a solution of I highly inflammable material, such as celluloid or. nitrated cellulose dissolved in a suitable solvent, such as ether and alcohol mixture for the lower nitrated compound, and
amylacetate for the more highly nitrated compounds. .The end of a Bickford cord or like timefuse is coated with this solution by i any suitable process, and the applied solujtionized area may be dusted or otherwise treated with gun powder. Afterward this gunpowder may or maynot be treated with a second coating of the solution.
In order that this invention may be'clearly understood and readily carried into practice, I. 45.
reference may be had to the appended explanatory drawing, which illustrates in section, and on an enlarged scale a Bickford cord time fuse treated according to thepresent invention.
I a 18 the combustible fuse charge; bis the casing of the fuse, which may be of fabric or other appropriate material. To the end of r such a fuse alayer or. coating 0 of highly inn flammable waterproofing material is applied, said coating being extended overthe .Specification o f Letters Patent. Patentd Apr. 16, 1918. Application filed. December 23,1915. Serial 1%. 138,540; 7 I i V sectional extremity of the casing b, as well as over the sectional extremity of thefuse charge a. When applying this first coating,
a number of thefuses 00,12, may be located side by side and retained in close contiguity with their extremities in a common plane,
. and the extremities may then be collectively treated with the coating 0, as for instance by a brush or by spraying. The coated surfaces-may then if desired be dusted or treated with meal or fine grain gun powder (:1,
fuse casing 22,- Or the entire fuse casing may if desired be coated with the waterproofing solution. Eitherextremity or both extremities of the fuse may be treated ac cording tothe present invention.
. Alternatively the gun powder may be applied at the same timeas the solution by making a paste of the gun powder and-the solution and suitably treating the fuse with this paste. 7 b The solution may be utilized in a number of ways for waterproofing or protecting from atmospheric conditions the fuse; for instance. in the manufacture of the fuse the combustible contents thereofmay be treated or impregnated withthe waterproofing solution. l
The invention is'applicable to fuses adapted to be fired by. a percussion cap or fuses adapted to be fired in any other applicable manner. Ina fuse adapted, for instance, to be fired by virtue of the application of a suitable brimstone or like igniting firing portion at the extremity adapted to be ignited byfriction, the brimstone orthe like may be treated or impregnated with the waterproofing solution.
WVhat weclaim as'our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is t t 1 1. A Bickford type cord or liketime fuse such .as set forth, which, or a part of which,
