STRAINER.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 30.1917.

a vwewtoi JOHN LAWRENCE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STRAINER.
Application filed July 30, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, Jornv LAWRENCE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strainers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in strainers of the class adapted to be used as percolators for coffee and the like. The object of the invention is to provide a holder by means of which the strainer cloth may be readily adjusted and firmly held; the inventionalso includes means for preventing lateral displacement of the strainer during operation; and a further object is to provide a simple and inexpensive construction whereby the holder may be formed from a single piece of metal.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, and wherein like characters of reference are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the holder embodied in the present invention; Fig. 2, a side view, showing the holder in connection with the strainer cloth, the latter being indicated in dotted lines; and Fig. 3, an extended view of the blank from which the holder is formed.
The blank, as indicated in Fig. 3, is made from a single piece of material, preferably spring metal. and formed with the handle sections l, the opposite ends of the blank being longitudinally slitted at 2 to form opposite ring sections 5 and 6. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the blank is folded upon itself to form a resilient operating handle 4, and the handle sections and the ring sections are suitably shaped to form telescoping clamp rings 5 and 6 the same being preferably flared to engage and wedge therebetween a fabric strainer, indicated by the dotted lines 7, the free ends of the blank of each ring being connected by a brazed joint as shown The slits, as shown, extend well into the Specification of Letters Patent.

handle sections to increase the elasticity of the clamp rings in their engagement with the strainer cloth. At their junction, the handle and ring sections are bent or crimped at approximately right angles to each other, the opposite crimped portions being shaped to overlap when the rings are closed.
By the action of the spring handle, the clamp rings are normally held apart when not engaging the strainer cloth, and for the adjustment of the latter the clamp rings are adapted to first hold the cloth at the point 9, from which part it may readily be dished to the shape indicated and firmly held by closing the rings together thereon. The coffee or other material operated upon may then be introduced into the strainer and boiling water percolated therethrough in the usual manner.
For supporting the strainer upon a vessel against lateral displacement, hook-shaped feet 10 are provided on the bottom edge of the inner ring 6.
As thus constructed, the resilient action of the clamp rings securely holds the strainer cloth and likewise provides means for quickly detaching the same for renewal.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A strainer holder formed of a single piece of spring metal folded upon itself to form a resilient handle, the free ends thereof being longitudinally slitted and formed into resilient telescoping clamp rings, said slits extending into the handle sections.
2. A strainer holder formed of a single piece of spring metal. folded upon itself to form a resilient handle, the free ends thereof being longitudinally slitted and crimped at approximately right angles to said handle and formed into a pair of telescoping clamp rings, the slits extending into the handle sections and the crimped portions arrcnged to overlap each other when the rings are closed.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York this 26th day of July, A. D. 1917.
