To all "whom it may concern Be it known that I, J OHN H. CROWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tisbury, in the county of Dukes and State of l'viassachusetts, have invented a new and useful Implement for Opening Bottles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the improvement and arrangement of an implement for opening bottles; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to assemble in one implement devices for removing different kinds of closures of bottles; second, to so arrange said devices relative to each other that their use may be facilitated; and, third, to so arrange, and improve said devices that they become more durable.

I attain these objects by the mechanical formation, and arrangement illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a top view of one side of the implement; and Fig. 2, a side view of the implement at right angles with the top view.

The elongated body or handle member A is provided at one end with, preferably a plurality of longitudinally directed needle pointed prolongations B spaced a distance apart and parallel with each other in the longitudinal plane of said. handle member. Upon one face of said handle member is rigidly secured at right angles to said face and at a predetermined distance rearward of said needle points a member C terminating at its free end in a horizontally directed extension projecting forward toward said needle points and constituting a hook adapted to engage the lower edge of a metallic closure of a bottle opening. This member 0 by contact with the outer wall of a bottle opening serves as a delimiting gage limiting the forward thrust of the needle points when the handle is placed upon the top of the bottle and the points inserted in a paper closure of the bottle, and thus prevents the points being pushed against the inner wall of the bottle opening and thereby blunted and their utility destroyed, blunted needle points prevent their being inserted in a paper closure especially when said. closure is afiected by moisture which at times will occur, therefore this feature of protecting the needle points is very important in pre- Specification of Letters Patent.

A second men'iber D of cork screw formation is likewise rigidly secured upon the opposite face of the handle member A at right angles thereto and in axial alinement with the gage n'ien'iber C, and by contact with-the outer wall of the bottle opening similarly serves as a delimiting gage to limit the forward thrust of the needle points when the handle is used with said face upon the top of the bottle.

The objects, and mechanical formation and arrangement of the members of the implement having been described, its manipulation is as follows: To remove paper closures such as are used to close milk bottles, the implement is grasped by its handle F, it being immaterial whether the top or bottom of the body member A. as designated in Fig. 2, is uppermost, only that it is either one or the other, the needle points B are then placed angularly on, and forced into, said closure between its center and periphery, a lifting motion then given to said needie points B removes said closure, preferably said lifting motion should be accomplished by bearing down on the handle F, utilizing the top side of the mouth of the bottle as a fulcrum and the elongated body member A as a lever to pry out of the bottle its paper closure. Now to prevent the needle points B from coming in contact with the inside of the mouth of the bottle when being forced into the paper closures and thereby becoming injured, one of the members C D (de pending upon which side of the implement is uppermost) having been placed at a predetermined distance from said needle points B as stated above, come in contact with the outside of the mouth of the bottle before the said needle points reach its inside surface thereby acting as gages which determine and limit the longitudinal movement of the implement and prevent injury to said points B. To remove metal closures such as are used to close milk bottles, said implement is grasped by its handle F with member D uppermost, and placed flat on said closure, and then moved horizontally until the extension member E on member 0 comes under the edge of said closure, a lifting motion then given the said handle F removes said metal closure, To remove cork,-

closures of bottles said member D being of screw formation is utilizedas a cork screw, the body member A becoming its handle.

' As will be seen in the above description each of the members C D have a double use, that of assisting in the removal of the closures, and acting as gages thereby preventing injury to, and prolonging the durability of said needle points B.

I claim:

An implement for opening bottles comprisinga handle member terminating at one end in parallel longitudinally directed needle pointed prolongations disposedin the plane of said handle member, and arranged and adapted for insertionin a paperclosure of a bottle opening, a gage member carried on one face of said handle member at right angles thereto and at a predetermined distance rearward of said needle points for engagement with the outer side wall of the bottle opening to limit the forward thrust of said needle points, and termi- "nziting at its free end in a horizontally dimember in axial alinement with said first gage member and, formed as a cork-screw arranged and adapted to withdraw cork closures ofybottles, also arranged and adapted to limit the forward thrust of said needle points when sa'id handle member is usedthat side lowermost.
