Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1918.
Applieatien filed June 20, 1917. serial No. 175,967.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK J. CLANOY,
of Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvern'ent in Deck-Lashings 'for Boats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the "accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The present invention relates to lashings for securing a boat to the deck of a vessel 'or other support or fixture.
The essential object of my invention is to rovide a lashing easily applied, positive in its retention and quickly detachable for releasing the boat. 7
My invention can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan showing a boat provided with lashings embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2'--'2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is "a plan of one of the-couplings to which reference will later be made.
Fig. 4 is a section of the coupling taken on the line 4-4 of Fig'. 3, and
Fig. 5 shows the detached members of the coupling including the latch to which special reference will later be made.
Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings 1 represents a portion of the deck of a vessel (not shown) 2 a boat releasably secured to the deck by lashings embodying my invention, and '3 the chocks supporting the boat.
The boat lashings comprise connections 4 and 5 passed, respectively, over the fore and aft "portions of the boat and secured to the deck.
The connections 4 and 5 are alike in character. Each consists of separate rope sections 6 and 7, respectively, the inner ends of which are joined by a coupling 8. The outer ends of the rope sections are secured to eye bolts on the deck, the section 6 being secured to eye bolts adjacent the inside of the boat and the sections 7 to eye bolts adj acent the ofl? side thereof.
Each of the couplings 8, which connect the respective rope sections, comprises a socket-forming member 10 secured to one rope section, a tongue-carrying member 11 secured to the other rope section, adaptable to enter and fit within the socket-forming member, and a releasable latch 12 for lock in-g together the two members when comv F The socket-forming member consists of spaced plates joined together to form a motangular socket 13 between them. The toi'igue-carrying member 11 consists of a plate the fore part of which has an easy sliding fit within the socket of the socketforming member and the entry of which into the socket is limited and defined by shoulders 14 on the plate which engage the end of the socket forming member when the tongue is properly in place.
The releasable latch locking the two members together, comprises a bolt 16 extensible crosswise through the socket-forming member and through the tongue within it when the tongue is in proper socketed position within the member as above defined. The belt is mounted to slide within a tubular casing 17 thread-ed within an opening in one of the side plates of the socket-forming member 10 and projecting outwardly therefrom at an angle normal thereto. I The end of the casing 17 i's clo'sed by a chambered cap 18 threaded to fit thereonexcepting for a central opening in the cap through which theshank of the bolt extends. The head, 19 of the bolt is slightly larger than its shank and between this head and the cap, coiled around the shank of the bolt, is a spring 20 the tension of which maintains the bolt in a normally extended orlocking position, permitting, however, of the retraction or withdrawal of the bolt by compression of the spring. 7
Both the members 10 and 11 of the coupling, which connects the respective rope sections, are secured to the ends of the rope sections by suitably-interposed rings 21, these rings being passed directly through the respective members and the ends of the rope connecting with the rings having thimbl'es 'or loops formed thereon.
Running between the protruding shanks of the bolts to the respective couplingsis a rope 22 which has a length substantially equal to the distance fore and aft the boat which separates the connections 4 and 5 passed over it. The ends of the rope are secured to the shanks of the respective bolts by means of shackles 23. These shackles by engagement with the caps 18, which form the ends ofthe casing confining the bolts,
operate to define the extended position of the bolts and which in any eventis a position which will fairly and properly lock together the parts 10 and 11 of the coupling when the bolt is extended.
Thefoperation is as follows The connections 4 and 5 are passed over the fore and aft portions of the boat and are made secure, the respective rope sections of the separate connections being first joined together by their respective couplings. In this connection it is to be observed that the rope sections 7 of the respective connections -l and 5, or those which connect with the eye bolts on the deck adjacent the ofi side of the boat, are preferably permanent fastenings, while the ends of the rope sections 6, or those which connect with the eye bolts on the deck adjacent the inside of the boat, are releasably secured by first passing the ends of the ropes through the eye bolts to form a round turn and then carrying up the ends of the ropes to form a half hitch with the rings, which secure the rope sections to the socket-forming members of the coupling to which they are secured.
The lashing having been secured, the entire lashing is instantly releasable by a pull exerted upon the connecting rope 22. As this rope is pulled the bolts to each of the couplings in the respective connections will be Withdrawn, thereby separating the connections and freeing the boat.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A boat lashing of the type specified,
consisting of attachable connections eX- tensible transversely over separate parts of the boat, each of said connections being sec tional in character and provided with a releasable coupling joining the respective sections, and means whereby the couplings of the separate connections may be simultaneously released. a
2. A boat lashing of the type specified, consisting of attachable connections extensible transversely over separate parts of the boat, each of saidconnections being sectional and having a couplingfor connecting the respective sections thereof, each of said couplings comprising complementary parts and a latch releasable by a pull thereon connecting said parts, and means connecting the latches of the respective couplings whereby they may be simultaneously releasedand the couplings broken by a pull upon said latch-connecting means.
3. A boatlashing of the type specified, comprising an attachable connection extensible transversely over the boat, said C011.- nection being sectional in character and having a coupling for connecting the respective sections thereof, said coupling comprising complementary parts and'a latch releasable by a pull thereon connecting said parts. 7
4:. Aboat lashing of the type specified, comprising an attachable connection extensible transversely over the boat, saidconnection being sectional in character and having a coupling for connecting the respective section thereof, said coupling comprising complementary tongue and socket members attached to the respective sections and a releasable latch carried by the socket member for connectingsaid members.
5. A boat lashing of the type specified, comprising attachable connections extensible transversely over separate parts of the boat, each of said connections being sectional in character and having a coupling for connecting the respective sections thereof, each ofsaid couplings comprising complementary parts consisting of a tongue and socket member and a latch carried by thesocket member for connecting said respective members, said latch being releasable by-a pull thereon, and means connecting the latches of the respective couplings whereby they may be simultaneously released and the couplings broken by a pull upon said latch connecting means.
6. A boat lashing of the type specified,
consisting of attachable connections ex-- tensible transversely over separate parts of the boat, each of said connections consisting of separate rope sections and a coupling for connecting the respective sections, each of said couplings consisting of a complementary tongue and socket member and a latch carried by the socket member, said latch comprising a spring pressed bolt. actuated to assume a normal engaging position and releasable by a pull thereon, and a rope connection between said bolts whereby they may be simultaneously withdrawn and the couplings broken by a pull upon said connecting rope.
