Description

To all whom itmay concern." l 1. :i ,I Be it 'known'that I, IRWIN"A'. Sminnns, a;
citizenofathe United-"States, *residing at?` and'each yopening 5 is Vprovided' with a Reading, in'l'the county of Berks vand State E of Pennsylvaniayhave invented Acertain new and useful Improvements in Journal-Box Lids, of which the following is a specification. 4 l
This invention relates to improvements in.J journal box lids and it pertains more particularly to the lids of journal boxes used on rolling stock, such as railway cars.
The object in the present inventionis to provide a device that will eliectively prevent the very harmful occurrence commonly 'known as a hot box, due to the ignition of combustible gasesftherein by the friction of the journal.
In my present invention l have devised a journal box lid by the use of which these gases will be drawn from the box by a oonstant suction whenever the car is in. motion, and one in which the action is identical when the car is moving in either direction.
The invention consists of a journal box lid formed with a longitudinal passageway, which passageway is in communication, in two opposed directions, with the interior of the box on which the lid is used, while the entrance of a current of air into the passageway is assured from either end, depending upon the direction of travel.
The' invention is more fully described in the following specilication and clearly illustra'ted in 4the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of proved box lid.
llig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2 my im- ,Fig l. 3 is a sectional view of line 3--3 ot Fig. l,

. Specicaton of Letters Patent, fajgntgd MaK-1918 l Applicatie a' filed October 1, i
leading from the y :inner wall of the lid into the passageway 3,
With this simple air'passagewaythrough the lid and'provided with communication with the interior oi the box on which it is used, it is evident that the movement of the car on which it is used, in either direction, will create a suction or partial vacuum in the journal box, due to the passage of air through the passageway 8, and'that this draft of air will draw the combustible gases from the interior of the box, through one of the openings 5 and cause it to be expelled through the exit end of the passageway 3, and the action will be the saine in either direction of movement of the car.V
The downwardly disposed ends of the passageway will prevent the settling in the passageway of particles of grit or other foreign matter, while they will permit sulficient air circulation through the passageway y `terior or the box, this passage of air, due
to the movement of the car, will draw the gases from the box and expel them through the openings 4L.
It is evident that the particular ormal tion ot this passageway may be varied, and that a drawing' of the gases from the box may be accomplished with slightly varied outlets, and i do not desire to limit myself to the exact formation shown and described, but
.l/Vhat l claim iszl. A journal box lid having a horizontal, open ended, tubular portion formed onits outer face and provided with downwardly disposed extremities, 'said lid having va central opening in its inner face communicating with the tubular portion, and two oppositely disposed hoods for said central inlet.
2. A journal box lid having a horizontal, tubular portion formed integrally therewith, said tubular portionhav-ing ari-,opening at each end through the front face ofthe 10 for said central opening.

lid,` 'and an opening. from the rear face off:
the'. lid substantially midway between` the two'outside openings.
3. A journal box lid' forx'ned withsan open ended,- vhorizontally` disposed passageway Whose inleiuand outlet openings are on the otsde of the lid, said passageway having a central communication with theI interior of the box` on which the lid is used and a hood y.45. A .journal hox lid .formedwith an open [opening from the *said passageway.'
5. A journal box lid having a horizontal,
open ended tublilar portion formed on its outer face and a central inlet into| said tubular portion from the inside of the lid and two oppositely disposed hoods for said inlet. In' testimony whereof I affix my'signature.
