Be it known that I, CHARLES V. VVILGUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingston, Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Calculating-lifachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in calculating machines, and more particularly to that class of calculating machines Wherein items may be registered and accumulated in the usual manner on the counters on one side ofthe machine, the opposite side being devoted to the printing of abstract or designating figures without registering the same.
One object is to provide novel and simplified mechanism for accommodating the extension of the totals of the items registered, from the counters on one side of the machine to the adjacent counters on the other side thereof, and where printing mechanismforms a part of the machine, the recording of such extended total.
Thus, in listing pay checks, for instance, the number of said check might be printed to the left and opposite the amount of said check, without being registered on the corresponding counters, which latter remain in their zero positions until the sum of the amounts of said checks accumulatin on the counters at the right ofthe machine, exceeds the capacity of such counters, whereupon such excess is automatically extended across or carried over. on to the idle counters at the left of the machine.
Under ordinary conditions, the listing of the designating figures to the left of the amounts would eflect the imprint of ciphers in the space or spaces. if any, between the digit at the right of the designating figure and the digit at the left of the amount, to prevent which, the cipher-printing mechanism is split to interrupt the printing of ciphers to the right of the designating figure.
The sum of said designating figures is not required in the'computation and to prevent the registration of said figures on the countcrs without affecting the registration of the items, I render ineffective the drive members cooperating with those counters of the registcr to the left (say) of the split, and thus, in efi'ect, split the register.

the split would remain idle were it not that the carrying or transferring mechanism operates to extend a total larger than the capacity of the counters to the right of the split, onto the counters to the left thereof.
When such extended total is to be printed, it is necessary to restore the drive members to effective position, and another object of this invention is to effect such restoration by simplified and novel means controlled by the operation of taking a total, the parts afterward being returned to a condition to accommodate extended totals and permit the listing only of items to the left of the split, at the conclusion of the total taking operation.
It is sometimes desirable to split the printing section only, so as to accumulate items on the register on both sides'of the split, such items being printed and totals thereof recorded, another object of this invention be ing to simplify and? improve the means whereby these operations are effected.
A still further object is to combine, in one machine, the mechanisms by which extended totals are accommodated with the imprint only of items to the left of the split; and the mechanism whereby the registration and printing of items on both sides of the split in the printing section is obtained; together with means to render the machine capable of registering'and printing items to its full capacity, eliminating the splits in the register and printing sections, in a novel and simplified manner hereinafter set forth.
Other objects and advantages will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a machine of the wellknown Wales type, equipped with one embodiment of this invention.

Some of the constructions disclosed in the drawings and hereinafter referred to, are likewise shown and described in atents to Wales 745,539 and 745,542, both ated December 1, 1903; 768,097, dated August 23, 1904; 7 94,205, dated July 11, 1905 and 797,032, dated August 15, 1905. Reference is also made to patents issued to C. N. Mc- Farland, 842,232, dated January 29, 1907 and to McFarland and Wales, 880,157, dated February 25, 1908. I p
irframe (Fig. 2) including similar side pieces 1, (one only being illustrated), supports at its forward end a keyboard mechanism, and at its rear end, a printing mechanism, between which two mechanisms is located an accumulating or registering mech anism, said mechanisms being suitably connected for cooperation. A case 2 (Fig. 1) incloses the mechanisms, said case bein cut away, as at 3, to ex ose the keys 4: o the keyboard section, an having a transparent plate 5 through which the characters of the registering mechanism are visible.
The k'eys'4 are arranged in rows from 1 to 9, if the decimal system is used, the keys of each row controlling correspondingly arranged stops 6, (Fig. 2). Depression of any key in a row rocks a corresponding lever 7 to inter-pose its stop 6 in the path of a drive member or rack 8 (Fig. 19) cooperating therewith. A latch 9 (Fig. 2) operates in the well-known manner to retain the stop in effective position against the tension of a key-restoring spring 10.
A series of counters 11, one for each row of keys, is mounted loosely on an axle 12, each counter having a pinion 13 fast therewith. T he axle is operated by well-known means (not shown) controlled from the main drive shaft 14: to shift the series of counters as a unit, to effect the engagement. of the pinions 13 with, and their disengagement from, the drive members 8. A handle 15 (Fig. 1) may operate the main drive shaft 14.
Said drive members 8 are each preferably pivotally mounted on front and rear arms 16,17 journaled on a shaft 18 and a cross rod 19, respectively, with their forward ends in line with the corresponding rows of stops 6. Extensions 20 and links 21 (Fig. 2) connect the respective rear arms 17 with type carriers 22 having types 23 therein to strike against the work sheet on a platen 24. Hammers 25 drive spring-pressed plungers 26 arranged opposite the printing line of the platen, against the types when the latter are properly positioned by the operation of the drive members 8, to effect the type impressions. There is a hammer for each type carrier. A universal detent 27 normally holds the hammers collectively retracted, said de tent being controlled from the main drive shaft in the usual manner, not shown. Individual latches 28 normally lie in position to hold the hammers separately in retracted position. Trip bars 29 controlled by their respective drive members 8, release the individual latches of the hammers which are to operate prior to the release of the detent 27.
Detents 6" loosely mounted on a shaft 6*, normally lie'in the paths of the drive members to arrest the latter against an advance sufficient to effect a registration onlthc counters, as on an idle stroke of the main drive shaft, for instance, but the racks are permitted a slight advance to position the zero types at the printing line.
If, in any row, no key is depressed, the corresponding drive member will be held by its detent 6 against elfective movement so far as its trip bar 29 is concerned, to prevent the latter from releasing the corresponding individual latch controlling the corresponding hammer, thereby preventing cipher printin to the left when the detent 27 is released y the operation of the main drive shaft.
Tails 30 on the respective individual latches 28 overlap the adjacent latches to the right (Figs. 12 and 13), to trip said latches'in the usual manner to effect the printing of ciphers to the right of any figure in a column other than the units column.
A bail 31 Fig. 2 carried by a rock-shaft 32 controlled by the main drive shaft 14 in the usual manner, not shown, normally retains the drive members 8 retracted against the tension of drive springs 33, at which time the counters 11 are disengaged from said drive members.
In an adding operation, after the desired keys :1 have been depressed, the main drive shaft on its forward stroke, withdraws the bail 31 to permit the drive springs 33 to ad vance the drive members 8 until the forward ends of said membersare arrested by the stops 6 set up by the keys depressed. Detents 6 arrest the drive members into whose paths no stops have been interposed. Each drive member as it advances positions its type-carrier 22 with the proper type opposite the printing line on the platen 24, after which the hammers whose latcheshave been tripped. are released by the broad detent 27 to effect the imprint of the item set up on the keyboard.
Immediately thereafter, the axle 12 on which the counters are supported, is tripped to mesh the pinions 13 with the drive members 8. The main drive shaft upon its return, rocks the bail 31 against the forward arms 16 to restore the drive members, said members. on their return, operating the counters to register the item set up on the keyboard, and also restoring the type-can riers to normal position, after which the counters are disengaged from their drive men'ibers. and the machine is ready for another operation.
Depression of a total key 3-1. opera es a lever 34- to adjust axle supports not shown in the well-known manner. to permit the engagement of the pinions 13 with the drire members 8 at the outset. of the forward stroke of the main drive shaft. whereby the counters are turned as the drive members advance during the forward stroke of the drive shaft 1-1. A link 34' (Fig. 4.) operated by said lever 34. has a cam face 34 to contact a crank 34 fast on the shaft 6* to turn the latter and with it a rod 34 Fig. 2 which shifts the series of detents 6 out of the paths of the drive members to enable the latter to advance until the counters are arrested at zero position in the customary manner. The counters permit the advance of the drive members until the latter have brought the types 23 in the type carriers to position to print the amount registered by the counters at the depression of the total key 34, after which the imprint is effected as heretofore explained. The counters are disengaged from their drive members at the. outset of the return stroke of the main drive shaft when a total is taken, the machine then being clear. The detents 6 are restored-to effective position slightly before the couutors are released from their drive members. to arrest the latter against further forward movement by the'drive springs 83 after the disengagement of the counters and drive members. If a subtotal is being taken, the total key is held depressed on the return stroke of the main drive shaft, to prevent disengagement of the counters and drive members, so that the former are turned to register the total of the items set up. This mechanism is fully set forth in the patents above referred to.
A carrying mechanism, fully disclosed in the patentshereinbefore noted, is provided. whereby to transfer the tens from one counter to the next counter to the left.
The foregoing construction is old and only constitutes part of the present invention, in so far as it is combined with the new parts now to be described.
It is sometimes desired to print a series of designating figures or abstract numbers opposite the items or amounts, without re; istering said designating figures or numb rs. which however are set up on the keyboard with the items and simultaneously printed therewith.
In accomplishing this result, the printing" of ciphers in the space or spaces (if 3h .'l between the desi nating figure and the numerals representing the amount or item. should be prevented, and furthermore. the operation of the counters correspondiiu with the banks or rows of keys on which the designating figures are set up, should be prevented.
In the present instance, the three left hand banks or rows of keys may be appropriated for setting up the designating figures, the printing section being split accordingly. and the registering section being split as regards direct registration and accumulation.
The split in the printing section may be formed by removing one of the tails 30. but in the present instance, the tail 35, on the third latch from the left, (Figs. 12 and 13) is pivotally secured at 35". to its latch to be shifted into and out of its position overlapping the next latch to the left. A switch plate 36 (Fig. 10) shiftably mounted in brackets 37, is slotted at 38, the free end of the latch 35 projecting through a corresponding slot 38 to be swung back and forth by said switch. A spring 39 (Fig. 10) tends to hold the switch in the position shown in Fig. 11, with the tail 35 effective to eliini' nate the split (Fig. 13), but normally a cam fare 44 on a stem or switch bar 42 lies in the path of the switch to hold the tail 35 in idle position, (Fgs. 10 and 12).
Depression of a lever 40 (Fig. 10) journaled on a cross-rod 41, operates the stem or switch-bar 42 connected thereto at 43, to shift the cam edge 44 on said Stem relatively to the switch or to a stud 45 projecting from an extension 46 of the switch, to bring the low point of the cam opposite the stud 45 and thereby permit the spring 39 to shift the switch and the tail 35 to effective position (Fig. 13), thuseliminatin the split in the printing section. The printing section is then adapted to rint items to its full capacity. A. spring 4 (Fig. 7) restores the lever 40 when released, thereby drawing the cam edge 44 against the stud 45 to return the switch, and consequently shift the tail 35 to reestablish the split, against the tension of spring 39. The stem 42 passes through a recess 42 in one of the bracket 37, for guidance.
The registration of the designatin figures is prevented by disabling or ren ering ineffective the drive members corresponding with the three left hand counters. It will be remembered that the series of counters shift as a unit to en 'age with and disengage from the drive memdiers and that said drive members are pivotally mounted on the swinging arms 16 and 17. Said left-hand drive members 51 (Figs. 7 and 8) are shorter than drive members 8, and instead of being connected to the front arms 16, are support ed on rests 52 carried by arms 53 fast on a cross shaft 54, said shaft having a crank 55 (Fig. 6) to which is pivotally connected at 56, a reciprocatory link 57 guided on a stationary pin 58. A. projection 59 on said link contacts a cam face 60 preferably formed on a slide 61 slotted to embrace and be guided by the rod 19, and having a guide 62 traversing a slot in a stationary part of the frame. The rests 52, arms 53, and shaft 54 form a supporting frame for the shiftable drive members 51 which are pivoted at their rear ends at 50 to the rear arms 17. Springs 63 (Fig. 2) connected to the shiftable drive members 51 normally hold them disabled or ineffective by drawin them below the paths of their correspon ing counters 11. The free ends of said drive members press on the swinging frame to normally hold it inclined rearwardly with the projection 59 on the link 57 in contact with the cam face 60. In the form of the invention herein shown, a spring 64 (Fig. 3) acts on the slide 61 to hold the latter elevated with the low point of the cam 60 in line with the projection or stud 59.
The shortening of the drive members 51 and their displacement relatively to the counters 11, also displaces them relatively to the stops 6 (Fig. 2) which control the positions of the types 23 relatively to the printing line, as well as the amount of rotation to be imparted to the counters 11.
To effect the imprint of the designatin figures, positioning bars 48 (Figs. 2 and 8 occupy the places of the usual drive members, said bars being pivoted at 49 and 50 to the usual front and rear arms 16 and 17 and lying parallel with the shiftable drive members 51. The forward ends of the positioning bars are adapted to contact the stops 6 set up by the three left hand banks of keys, to properly position the types of the type carriers connected with the extensions 20 of the rear arms 17. The positioning bars are cut away or recessed on their upper edges, as at 48' to prevent contact of the pinions 13 of the counters therewith.
Thus it will be seen that figures set up on the three left hand banks will be printed but not registered, and that the split in the printing mechanism will prevent the printing of ciphers between the designating figures and the numerals representing the items or amounts (Fig. 5).
Furthermore, since the carrying mechanism is not affected by disabling the drive members, a total greater than the capacity of that portion of the register to the right of the split is carried across the split and registered on one or more of the counters corresponding with the disabled drive members.
In view of such extension of the total, it becomes necessary to restore the disabled drive members 51 to effective position and eliminate the split in the printing mechanism when a total is to be printed. Hence, the means for restoring the shiftable drive members 51 and the means controlling the split in the printing section are preferably operable by the total takin mechanism.
Thus, a projection 65 *igs. 3 and 4) on link 34 engages the crank 55 of the supporting frame 52, 53, 54, and when said link is operated by depressing the total key 34 to displace the detents 6, the projection turns the crank 55 to shift the frame 52-54 and restore the drive members 51 to effective position (Fig. 4), independently of the connecting bar 57 and slide 61.
Besides restoring the shiftable drive members to effective position, the total key also eliminates the split, to enable ciphers to be printed to the right of the split. A latch 91 (Figs. 3 and 14) is pivoted at 92 to a shiftable carrier 66, a bifurcated end of which is supported and guided on a cross rod 67, and the carrier is further guided and supported bya pin 68 entered in a slot (58 in the link 34". Said latch normally catches over a stud as on said link, so that when the link is operated by depressing the total key, the stud draws the latch forwardly and with it the carrier 66. A wrist 69 on the carrier 66 rides upon and turns a crank 70 (Fig. *1) projecting from a rocking frame 71 journaled on the cross-rod 67 and having an arm 72 (Fig. 6) loosely connected with the lever 40, as by a slot and pin 73. The crank 70 (Fig. 6) rocks the frame 71 and yoke 72 to swing the lever 40 and thereby shift the stem -12 with its cam 44 relatively to the stud 15 on the extension 46 of the switch plate 36 (Fig. 10) to enable the spring 39 to switch the pivoted tail 35 from its idle position (Fig. 12) to effective position (Fig. 13).
The shiftable drive members 51 being restored and the pivoted tail 35 switched to effective position to eliminate the split in the printing section, the machine is restored to full capacity, and the main drive shaft 14 is operated to record the total registered.
A convenient locking mechanism 74 (Figs. 3 and 4), such as is disclosed in the prior patents referred to, holds the total key lever depressed against the tension of its spring 75 during the forward stroke of the main drive shaft, said lock releasing the lever at the end of the forward stroke to enable the counters to be disen aged from the drive members in the wellcnown manner, before the latter are returned to normal position, when the machine is to be cleared.
The total key lever 34: when released, restores the link 34*, the crank 55 and its shifting frame rocking rearwardly and downwardly to permit springs 63 to disable the drive members 51 by drawin them below the lowest point to which tie pinions 13 drop. The link 34' on its return, lowers the displacing rod 34: (Fi 2) to permit the detents 6 to return to e ective position. The withdrawal of the drive members 51 by their springs 63 prior to the return of the detents 6 to effective position would free the positioning bars 48 to the action of their drive springs 33, which would propel the racks 51 and bars forwardl until arrested by the forward arms 16 stri ting against the restorin bail 31, and strain or batter the parts. 0 avoid this, the projection 65 on the link 34" enters a slot 76 in the crank 55 of the shifting frame. Said projection normally lies adjacent the forward end of said slot 76 to rock the latter and its frame and restore the shiftable drive members to effective position when the total key is depressed. As the crank is rocked to thus restore the drive members 51, an car 77 (Fig. 6) on the crank, rides under a sprin pressed catch 78 pivoted to one of the side frames 1, at 79, which drops behind the ear and locks the crank against returning.
The crank-turning projection 65 moves idly in the slot 76 of the crank 55, on the restoration of the link 34*, to leave the shiftable drive members 51 in effective position until the detents 6 have been restored, after which and before the link has reached its idle position, the catch 78 is caused to release the crank, as by the contactof a trip 80 (Fig. 7) on the link with a horn 81 on the catch to lift the latch, whereupon the disabling springs 63 rock the frame 5251 to the position shown in Fig. 2, in withdrawin the drive members 51 from the paths of their counters.
The machine herein shown and described is normally adjusted to accommodate extended totals, that is, the shiftable drive members 51 are normally disabled, as shown in Fig. 2, and the swinging tail 35 is in idle or ineffective position, (Fig. 12
The depression of a key 82 zFigs. 2 and 6) connected to lever 40 and known as split key #1, adjusts the machine to re ister and list items to its full capacity, sai key swinging the lever 40 to shift the cam 44 to idle position and enable the spring 39 to shift the switch 36 to swing the tail 35 to effective position (Fig. 13). Lever 40 by means of the stud 73 and arm 72, also tilts the rocking frame 71 to cause the crank 70 thereof to bear against a stud or projection 83 (Fig. 7) on slide 61 to shift said slide against the tension of its restoring spring 64, so that its cam 60 wipes along the pin or projection 59 and thrusts the connecting bar 57 forwardly to rock the crank 55 and the shifting frame controlled thereby, to restore the disabled drive members 51 to efi'ec tive position. The crank 55 rocks freely relatively to the operating pin 65 on the link 34, owing to the slot 76 in said crank, and when the total key is depressed the pin 65 travels idly in the slot, and the machine is in position to be operated for its full capacity. The ear 77 also rides idly under the catch 78 which remains stationary, without latching the frame 52-54, when the extended total or split key #1 is depressed.
The key 82 may be locked in depressed position to maintain the parts where adjusted, in the usual manner, by means of a notch on the key stem (Fig. 2) engaging the casing (not shown).
Some classes of work are facilitated by splitting the printing section without affecting the registering mechanism. Thus, it may be desired to register items at both ends of the series of counters; to print such items in two or more separate columns at the same time, and take totals of both columns.
The present invention provides for registering two separate sets of figures, printing them in separate columns, and obtaining the totals thereof, by the depression of what may be called a split key 84 (Fig. 14) mounted on a lever 85 swung from the cross rod 41,'and known as split key #2. The lever 85 when depressed, shifts the cam slide 61 through a bar 86 pivoted to the lever at 87 and having a slot 88 into which projects a pin 89 on said slide. The contact of one end wall of said slot with the pin 89 forces the slide in one direction to press the cam face 60 Fig. 6 against the projection 59 on link 57, thereby thrusting forwardly the link 57 to turn the crank 55 and with it the swinging frame to restore the shifting drive members 51 to effective position.
' It will be noted that this split key has no effect upon the means controlling the split in the printing section, swinging tail remaining in idle position.
With the split key 84 depressed, items may be registered and printed on both sides of the split, no ciphers being printed in the space or spaces, if any, between the respective columns, (see Fig. 18).
It will be remembered that the total mechanism controls the split in the printing section as well as the shiftable drive members. Hence, it is necessary to disconnect or disable the connection between the total mechanism and the switch controlling the swinging tail 35, when totals of the respective columns are to be taken. Otherwise, ciphers would be printed in the space or spaces between the two totals.
Therefore, said bar 86 carries a finger 90 (Figs. 14 and 16) which, when the split key 84 is operated, rocks the latch 91 on the carrier 66, to disconnect the carrier from the stud 93 (Fig. 15). Now, when the total key 34: is operated, and the link 34 is shifted forwardly, it rides idly on pin 68 (Figs. 3 and 4) passing through slot 68 in the link, without operating the carrier 66, leaving the rocking frame 71 and lever 40 at rest, so that the split remains effective.
A spring 94 (Fig. 14) returns the bar 86 and the split key 84:, when the latter is released, to remove the finger 90 from contact with the latch 91, whereupon a spring 95 causes the latch 91 to again catch over the stud 93. Spring 6-1 restores the slide 61, thereby bringing the low point of the cam face 60 opposite the stud 59. As the cam face returns to normal position, the disabling springs 63 (Fig. 2) acting upon the shiftable drive members 51, draw the latter to ineffective position and in so doing, rock the frame 52-54 and link 57 to their opposite limits of movement, with the stud 59 pressed against the cam face 60.
The machine is then iii-its normal condition to accommodate extended totals and permit the printing of a column of figures or characters to the left of the items to be added, while eliminating the registration of such figures or characters.
Obviously, the splits in the printing and registering mechanism may be located at other points than that shown, so that a greater or lesser number of banks of keys may be devoted to the registration of items and the printing of designating figures or other characters, respectively.
Changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from thejspirit and scope of this invention.
What I claim as new is 1. In a recording calculator, the combination with a printing'section, including means to interrupt cipher printing; a series of counters; and a drive shaft; of drive members for the counters, certain at least of which drive members are displaceable to, and adapted to remain in, abnormal positions relatively to their corresponding counters, during one or more complete opera tions of the drive shaft; and independently operable means, each of which is adapted to control the displacement of, and to positively restore the drive members to their normal ositions of rest; one of said independent y operable means being also effective to control the means which interrupts cipher printing.

In a recording calculating machine, the combination with a printing mechanism; and means to interrupt cipher printing; of engageable and disengageable drive members and counters, certain of the drive members being displaceable to abnormal positions relatively to their counters; separate manually-operable means to positively shift the displaceable drive members; one of said manually-operable means being temporarily efi'ective only, and also adapted to control the means which interrupts cipher printing.

In a recording calculator, the combination with a printing section, including means to interrupt cipher printing; a series of counters; and a drive shaft; of drive members for the counters, certain at least of which drive members are displaceable to, and adapted to remain in, abnormal positions relatively to their corresponding counters, during one or more complete operations of the drive shaft; and a total key to ositively restore the displaced drive members, and eliminate the split in the printing section, during the takin of a total.
4. In a recording czilculator, the combination with a printing section, including means to interrupt cipher printing; a series of counters; and a drive shaft; of drive members for the counters, certain at least of which drive members are displaceable to.
and adapted to remain in, abnormal positions relatively to their corresponding coun-- ters, during one or more complete operations of the drive shaft; and a single manually operable device to positively shift the displaceable drive members to effective position relatively to their counters, and to operate the split forming means in the printing section.

In a recording calculator, the combination with a printing section, including means to interrupt cipher printing; a series of counters; and a drive shaft; of drive members for the counters, certain at least of which drive members are displaccable to, and adapted to remain in, abnormal positions relatively to their corresponding counters, during one or more complete operations of the drive shaft; a single manually operable device to osltivel shift the displaceable drive mem ers to edective position relatively to their counters, and to operate the split forming means in the printin section; and a total key operable independently of said device to eliminate the split in the printin section, and to positively restore the disp aced drive members to operative position.

In a recording calculator, the combination with a printing section, including means to interrupt cipher printing; a series of counters; a totalizing mechanism; and a drive shaft; of drive members for the counters, certain at least of which drive members occupy an abnormal displaced position relatively to the remaining drive members, and out of engagement with the counters, such displaced drive members adapted to maintain this position throughout one or more operations of the drive shaft; and a single manually actuated device, operable independently of the totalizing mechanism, to eliminate the interruption in cipher printing and to positively restore the normally displaced drive members to position to be engaged by the counters.

In a calculating machine, the combination with a series of counters; and a normally split printing mechanism; of drive members for the respective counters, certain of said drive members normally displaced relatively to the corresponding counters; independent manually-operable devices, each of which positively restores the displaced drive members to operative position, and eliminates the split in the printing mechanism; one of said independent devices effective temporarily only; and another means to positively restore the displaced drive members only.

In a calculating machine, the combination with several counters; of drive memhers for said counters; certain of said drive members shiftable into and out of eflective r lation to their counters; a shiftable-frame coacting with said shiftable members, and having a crank; means to shift said members and frame to one position; a link connected to the crank; a cam to operate the link and crank; and a key-controlled means to drive the cum to adjust the frame and drive zncz-ubers to their opposite position.

In a calculating machine, the combination with several counters; of drive members for said counters; certain of said drive numbers shiftablc into and out of effective relation to their counters; a shiftable frame coacting with said shiftable members, and having a crank; means to shift said members and frame to one position; a link conncctcd to the crank, and having a projection thereon; a. cam to wipe said projection; and key-controlled means to drive the cum to adjust the frame and drive members to the other of their positions.

In a calculating machine, the combination with several counters; of drive members for said counters, certain of said drive members adjustable into and out of efi'ectire relation to their counters; a shiftable frame C'OilCbill" with said adjustable members; means to normally hold said adjustable members in one of their positions; a link connected to the frame; a cam slide to contact the lin I; a rocking frame to operate the cam slide and cause the shiftable frame to shift the adjustable drive members to the other of their positions; and a key to operate the rocking frame.

In a calculating machine, the combination with several counters; and a printing section, having means to split the cipher printing to the right; of drive members for the counters, certain of said drive members adjustable into and out of effective relation to their counters; a shiftable frame coacting with said adjustable members; means to normally hold said adjustable members in our of their msitions; a link connected to the frame: a cam slide to contact the link; and selective means to operate said cam slide, one of said selective means also effective to control the split in the printing section.

In a calculating machine, the combination with several counters; and a printing section, having means to split the cipher printing to the right; of drive members for the counters, certain of said drive members adjustable into and out of effective relation to their counters; a shiftable frame coacting with said adjustable members; means to normally hold said adjustable members in one of their positions; a link connected to the frame; a cam slide to contact the link;
a rocking frame to operate the cam slide, and to control the split in the printing section; and a key to operate the rocking frame.

In a calculating machine, the combination with several counters; and a printing the counters, certain of said drive members adjustable into and out of effective relation to their counters; a shiftable frame coacting with said adjustable members; means to normally hold said adjustable members in one of their positions; a link connected to the frame; a cam slide to contact the link; a rocking frame to operate the cam slide; and to control the split in the printing section; and selective means to operate said rocking frame, one of which Selective means is operable when a total is to be taken.

In a calculating machine, the combination with several counters; and a printingsection, having means to split the cipher printing to the right; of drive members for the ctunters, certain of said drive members adjustable into and out of effective relation to their counters; a shiftable frame coacting with said adjustable members; means to normally hold said adjustable members in one of their positions; a link connected to the frame; a cam slide to contact the link; a rocking frame to operate the cam slide; and to control the split in the printing section; a bar having a slot and pin connection with the cam slide; and separate keys to operate the rocking frame, and said bar, respectively.

In a calculating machine, the combination with several counters; of drive members therefor; certain of the drive mem bers being adjustable to effective or inefi'ective position relatively to their counters; means to control the positions of said ad justable drive members; typecarriers controlled by the normal drive members; and positioning bars to control similar typecarriers corresponding with the adjustable drive members.

The combination in an adding machine, with a drive shaft; a series of counters; and a printing mechanism having means to interrupt cipher printing; of drive members for the counters at least one of which members is displaceable to an abnormal position of rest relatively to its counter; an adjustable support to control the displaceable drive member; and independently operable devices, each of which effects the positive operation of the support and consequently shifts the drive member into or out of abnormal positions of rest; one of said devices operable to control the means to interrupt cipher printing.

The combination in an adding machine, with a drive shaft; a series of counters; and a printing mechanism having means to interrupt cipher printing; of drive members for the counters, at least one of which members is displaceable to, and adapted to remain in, an abnormal position of rest relatively to its counter throughout one or more complete operations of the drive shaft; an adjustable support to control the displaceable drive member; independently operable devices, each of which effects the positive operation of the support and consequently shifts the drive member into or out of its abnormal position of rest; one of said devices operable to control the means to interrupt cipher printing; and a total mechanism, the setting of which for operation, positively restores the displaceable drive member to its normal position of rest, and prevents interruption of the cipher printing. v

In an adding machine, the combination with a series of counters; of a drive member for each counter; means tending to force the drive members in one direction; detents to arrest said drive members, one at least of said drive members being shiftable to ineffective position relatively to its corresponding counter; total mechanism to restore said shiftable drive member and dis place the detents; and means to hold the shiftable drive member in effective posi tion until its detent returns into the path of said drive member. 19. In an addin machine, the combination with a series 0 counters; of drive membars for the counters, at least one of said drive members being displaceable to abnormal position relatively to its counter; manual means to positively effect the displacement of said drive member; total mechanism to control the time of engagement of the drive members and counters, said total mechanism also adapted to positively restore the displaced drive member to effective position; and a lock to retain said drive member efiective during the operation of taking a total.

In an adding machine, the combination with a series of counters; of drive members for the counters, at least one of said drive members being displaceable to abnormal position relatively to its counter; manual means to positively eifect the displacement of said drive member; total mechanism to control the time of engagement of the drive members and counters, said total mechanism also adapted to positively restore the displaced drive member to eifective position; acatch to retain said drive member eifective; and means to automatically release the catch, to enable one of the rack displacing means to become effective.

In an adding machine, the combination with a series of counters; of a drive member for each counter; type carriers controlled by the respective drive members, at least one of said drive members being shif.- able into and out of effective position relatively to its counter; a positioning bar to control the type carrier corresponding with the shiftable drive member; means tending to advance the drive members and positioning bar; detents to arrest said drive members and positioning bar to hold them idle; total mechanism to restore the shiftable drive member to effective position relatively to its counter, and to displace said detents; and means to lock the shiftable drive member in effective position until the corresponding detent returns into the path of its positioning bar.

In an adding machine, the combina tion with a series of counters; of drive mem bers for the respective counters, one at least of said drive members being shiftable into and out of effective position relatively to its counter; a positioning bar associated with said shiftable drive member; type carriers controlled by the other drive members and the positioning bar; means tending to advance the drive members and positioning bar, detents to arrest said members and bar to hold them idle; a supporting frame for the shiftable drive member; a total mechanism to temporarily displace said detcnts, and to swing the frame to restore the shiftable member to effective position; a catch to lock the frame with the shiftable member effective; and a trip to release the catch after the corresponding detent has returned to the path of the positioning bar.

In an adding machine, the combination with a series of counters; of drive members for the respective counters, one at least of said drive members being shiftable into and out of effective position relatively to its counter; a positionmg bar associated with said shiftable drive member; typecarriers controlled by the other drive members and the positioning bar; means tending to advance the drive members and positioning bar; detents to arrest said members and bar, when no registration is to be effected on the corresponding counters;-a supporting frame for the shiftable drive member; a crank on the frame; a total mechanism controlling a link to displace the detents; means on the link to turn the crank and cause the frame to restore the drive member to effective position; a catch to lock the crank and frame with the drive member in effective position; and a trip on the link to release the catch after the corresponding detent has returned to the path of the positioning bar.

In an addin machine, the combination with a series 0 counters; of drive members for the respective counters, one at least of said drive members being shiftable into and out of effective position relatively to its counter; a printing mechanism having means to interrupt ciphei printing to the right; means tending to disable the shiftable drive member; a frame to support said drive member; a link joined to the frame; a slide havin a cam face to thrust the link in one direction and operate the frame; a device to control said cam slide, said device also eflective to control the split in the printing mechanism; total mechanism cotnected with the supporting frame to restore the shiftable drive member in the operation of taking a total, independently of said device; a latch connecting the total mechanism with the split controlling device to enable the total mechanism to restore the cipher printing means to normal; and an independently-operable device to restore the shiftable drive member and release said latch.
In an adding machine, the combination with a series of counters; and printing mechanism including means to split or interrupt cipher printing to the right, comprising a pivoted tail, a switch to shift the tail, and a switch-bar; of drive members for the respective counters, at least one of said drive members being shiftable into and out of effective position relatively to its counter; means tending to disable the drive member; a swinging frame to support said member; a link joined to said frame; a slide having a cam face to operate said link and control the position of the shiftable drive member; a lever to control the switch-bar; a rocking frame connected with the lever and having a crank to operate the slide; a total mechanism, including a link connected with the supporting frame to restore the shiftable drive member to effective position when taking a total; a carrier having a projection to operate said crank and rocking frame; a latch to connect the carrier and total link, to enable the total mechanism to operate the lever and eliminate the split in the printing section; an independently-operable device, having a bar connected with the cam slide to operate the latter and restore the drive member to effective position; and a finger to release the latch to prevent the elimination of the split in the printing mechanism when taking a total.

In an adding machine, the combination with a series of counters; and printing mechanism having means to print ciphers to the right, said means adapted to he s lit; of drive members for the counters, at east one of said. members displaceable to abnormal position relatively to its counter; a manual device to control the displaceable drive member, and to control the split in the printing mechanism, to convert the machine from full capacity to one for accommodating extended totals and vice versa; manually-operated mechanism to positively restore the shiftable drive member to effective position, and eliminate the split when taking a total; and an independently operable manual device to positively restore the displaced drive member, and disable the connection between the total mechanism and the split in the printing mechanism.
