provements in l/Vindow-Raising Devices, of
which the following is a specification, refer.
. ence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
, This invention relates to a mechanically operated window and hasspecial reference l `to a device that may be advantageously used for raising and lowering a sash relative to a frame, particularly those sashes housed Within the side walls or panels of an automobile body or door and adapted to be `raised relative thereto to close the sideA of an automobile vbody or provide a panel or window on th L.upper edge of an automobile door.
The primary object of my invention is to `provide simple and effective means that may be easily and quickly installed in the wall of an automobile body or a door body to safely raise and lower the window sash, the sash being automatically swung into and out of engagement with the window frame without any danger of the sash becoming accidentally displaced. v r Another object of my invention is to 'provide a sash raising an lowerin device that may be bodily installed and bot ily removed from the wall o1' door of an, automobile body, and this is accomplished without disturbing or removing any part oli the autoymobile body or door.
' A still further object of my invention is to provide awindow sash raising and low-u ering mechanism wherein the parts are conet@ structed with a view of reducing the cost of 50 ing, whereininanntacture and at the same time retain those features by which safety. durability, `ease of operation, and applicability to variious types of motor vehicles are secured.
. se Withsuch ends in `view m invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter .specifically described and then claimed.
` Reference will now loe-'had to the drawlligure l is a vertical sectional view of a portion ci' an automobile door provided 'with the saslroperating mechanism;
have invented certain new and useful Im- `lowering the sash l comprises a lian, e*
Fig. 2 is a side elevation'of the sash operating mechanism, partly broken away;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view of aportion of the mechanism;
Fig. 4 is a tront elevation of a detached locking member;
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view ofthe s pressure member;
Fig. 7 is an edge View ol' the same;
Figs. 8 and 9 arel detail views of a linlr oi a chain forming p'art of the operating mechaanism and l v IFig. 1l is a plan of the same.
Considering the main views of the drain ing, there is shown in Fig. l a portion et a door frame' having an linner wall l and lan outer wall 2 aiiiordinp; space or iocltet 3,
ame; y Fig. 6 1s a side elevation of a detachedr Fig. l0 is a frclnt elevation ola sash linie;
for a sash, glassplateor panel 4l. The sash is adapted to be completely housed within the pocket 3 and the lower rail et said has a hook member 5 `adapted 'to a bracket G, carried by the upper inner edge of the outer wall 2, so thatv the s. sli il n' be supported in a raised out of the pocket 3.
The mechanism employed for raf Sill,
2 .c 7 disposed in parallelism with the .inner of the walll and supported relative the" by a flange 8 at the upper of th Vhanger plate secured on the upper ede'e o the inner wall l. VThe hanger plate' large central' opening with the mail ninal. edges of the opening learned er outturne provide an annular ball race 9, and at ine same time this ball race is formed7 teeth lll are provided circumferentially of the ball race and on ther inner. Wall tliereoi", as best .ble CD shown in Fig. 3, said teeth constitutim@` a stationary clutch member.
4In the ball race member il balls or anti-frictional members ll and on said balls is an outer rotatable ball race member l2 having flanges 13 'connected by screws lller other fastening means to' pin Wheel 15, said wheel having equally 16 contiguous to the periphery thereof.
The outer ball race member l2 has a eenu trai opening 17 alining witlian opening; iii in the inner wall l of the door frame.
5 or elevated pesition spaced pins orstuds tending through the opening 18 and fitted in the opening 17 is an operating shaft 19. Un the outer end of the shaft 19 is a semispherical ball member 20 engaged by a socket member or face plate 21 suitably secured to the Wall 1. A handle or crank 22 on the end of the shaft 19 permits of this shaft being easily rotated and said handle or crank is formed with a shield 23 to exclude dirt and other foreign matter that might interfere With the movement of the ball member 2O in the socket `member 2l.
- On the operating shaft 19 adjacent the outer ball race member 9, is a presser member 24 having sockets 25 for balls or detents 26. These balls or detents 26 are adapted. to extend into recesses 27 in a circular locking member 28 having a beveled toothed periphery 29 adapted to engage the teeth 10 of the hanger plate 7 and prevent accidental rotation of the pin Wheel 15. The locking member 28 is formed with cupped portions 30 containing guide pins 31 and coiled compression sprmgs 32, said springs maintaining the locking member 28 normally in engagement With the hanger plate 7, and through the medium of the detents or balls 26 holding 'the pin Wheel against accidental rotation. Rotation of the operating shaft 19 cause the detents or balls 26 to ride out of the recesses 27 of the locking member 28 vthereby pressing the locking member toward the Wall 1 and out of engagement with the hanger plate 7, thus permitting of the pin wheel 15 being freely revolved. It is therefore apparent that the presser member 24, detents 26 'and locking member 28 c0nstitute means for holding the pin wheel against accidental rotation.
Attached to the pin Wheel 15 and adapted to be trained about the pin or stud 16 thereof is a chain composedv ot' links 33, 3st, 35 and 36. The link 33 is pivotally connected to the pin Wheel 15, as at 37, and all of said links are. articulated by connections corresponding to rule joints, so that the joined links can only break in one direction, that of being trained about the pins or studs 16 of the Wheel 15. Contiguous to the joints of the links of the chain are notches or recesses 38 to receive the pins or studs 16, anda curved guard 39, carried by the hanger plate 7, will cooperate with the pins 1G in preventing the links thereon from becoming accidentally displaced. The link 35 has a rule joint connection with the link 36 employed for sup'- porting the sash Ll, and this particular link has a longitudinal slot 40 to receive a pin or studr L11 of the sash 4l. The sash link 86 is normally held at a right angle to the link 35 and said link has a cam portion L12 adapted to engage the outer ball race member 12, when the sash is raised, so that said sash will be forced outward and the hook member 5 Lacoste placed over the bracket 6 of the outer Wall 2. To prevent a sudden descent of the sash 4 and cushion a lowering movement of the same, a spiral spring 113 is arranged'betwecn the outer ball race member 12 and the locking member 28. The inner convolution of the spring 43 is connected to the locking member 28, and the outer convolution thereis accomplished Without disturbing the side Walls 1 and 2 of the door frame.
It is thought that the operation and utility of the sash operating mechanism Will be apparent without further description,l and While in the drawings there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modiications as fall Within the scope of thel appended claims.
