To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, CHIN'ro A. GAnzonr, a citizen of the United States, residing 'at De Lancey, in the county of Jefferson and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Braces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a brace for railway rails and while it is capable of general application to railway rails, yet it is particularly adapted for use at curves or on bridges where guard rails are employed.
I particularly aim to provide a construction which may be used as a fastening means for abutting rails as well as a brace; one so formed as to preclude its moving laterally and accordingly the rails moving longitudinally; one adapted to cotiperate with guard rails; one havin a plurality of parts adapted to be positioned on the rails prior to fastening the parts together, and one of the particular, improved and efiicient constructions hereinafter described and illustrated in accompanying drawings and possessing the additional objects and advantages presently to appear.

Referring specifically to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, railway rails of the usual type are shown at 3, supported by suitable ties 4 as usual and at their joints connected together by means of fish plates, are splice bars 5 and usual bolts 6. Associated with the rails 3, are guard rails 7 of the usual type and positioned as usual on the ties 4: intermediate the rails 3 and relatively close thereto.
My improved brace, essentially comprises, two fastening sections generally designated A and B. The section A consists of two bolts 8 which slide through suitable openings in the webs of the rails 7 as shown in Fig. 1 and then through registering holes in the webs of the rails 3 and the fish plates 5. To the threaded portions of the bolts 8,
nuts 9 and 10 are applied respectively on the inner and outer faces of the rails 3. Upon nuts 9 and 10 being tightened, the bolts 8 aresecurely fastened in place and it will be noted that they serve as a fastening means, as well, securing the fish plates to the rails 3 and assist in joining the rails. Links 11 are fastened at 12 to the bolts 8 and extend inwardly so that their inner ends will overlap and the openings therethrough will register. The connections at 12 are preferably pivots. The section B comprises an elongated bolt 13 which removably extends through registering openings in the guard rails 7and in the track rails S. The outer end of the bolt 13 is screw threaded and a nut 14: rides thereon and either directly against the outer wall of the web of rail 3 or against a washer 15 which may be interposed.
It will be realized that the section A must be inserted or positioned by initially placing itintermediate the rails 7. Likewise the bolt 13 must be positioned by inserting it intermediate the rails 7 and therefore the connections at 12 are preferably pivotal as set forth so that the links 11 may be spread to facilitate the inserting movement. After the sections have been inserted, the links 11 are brought into overlapping relation with the holes therein registering and then into a yoke 16 at the inner end of the bolt, having hole in the yoke in registry with those of the links, after which a fastening element, for instance a rivet or bolt 17 may be passed through the holes and effectively secure the brace together. The nuts 9, 10 and 14: may thereafter be tightened to the desired degree.
By the provision of the two bolts 8 disalincd with the bolts 13 and the connection thereto by the diagonal links 11, the brace cannot well, and is not likely to, move laterally nor are the rails likely to creep longitudinally relatively to each other.
It will be noted that the relation of the braces is staggered, that is section A of one brace engages one rail 3 while section A of the other brace engages the opposite rail 3. The sections A therefore simply follow the joint of the rails, with the bolts 8 utilizing the usual bolt holes in the rails and fish plates and with the other holes to accommodate the brace being bored accordingly.
Since merely the preferred embodiment has been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details and construction may be resorted to without de- 2. In combination with two railway rails,
a guard therefor having a plurality of sections extending through one of the rails, means to fasten said sections on one of the rails from a position intermediate the rails, fastening means passingthrough the other ail and insertible from a position intermediate the rails, and means to connect the sections and fastening means together after positioning thereof.

In combination. with two railway rails, a plurality of guard devices connected to one of the rails, a guard device connected to the other rail, connecting means consisting of separate members connected to the lastmentioned guard device and to and extending separately from the first-mentioned guard devices.
-l-. A device for bracing rails, comprising a bolt connected to one of the ails, and means diverging from saidbolt, a second bolt, said second bolt being connected to said means and serving to prevent lateral movement of the first bolt.
5. In combination with railway track rails and guard rails therefor, a brace member mounted in one of said guard rails, means to secure said member to the adj acent track rail, brac means mounted in the other guard rail, means to secure the last mentioned means to the adjacent track rail, and means to secure the mounted means and member together.

In combination with rails, and guard rails therefor, a bolt extending through one of the guard rails and adjacent rail, means to fasen said bolt "to said adjacent rail, links diverging from said bolt, second bolts, said links being pivoted to said second bolts, said second bolts extending through the other-guard rail, and means to secure said second bolts to the other rail.
