NOTE-SHEET SPOOL.
Specicatlon of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 26, 1918.
Application filed November 11, 1916. Serial No. 130,72-A
1 o uit @from at may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. CHASE, a citizen of the United States, a resident of the city of New York, in the countyland Stute of New York, have invented an Improvement in Note-Sheet Spools, of which the following is o specification. f This invention relates to music roll spools such as are commonly used in player-pauos or the like to carry the music roll or `note sheet. The principal object of the 4inventloni is to improve the construction of such spools so that they may be more easily` handled and may be more economicallypacked for shipment or storage. z For lthe purpose of illustration. and description, one embodiment of the invention the accompanying drawings, and therein l f F'gure 1 is a perspective view of gz no to sheetl spool embed ing the inventiqn,to.' hcrefor,- shown Qxidotted lines; f- Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal Section through the note sheet spooljffnd box* 'and Fig. 3 is a cross section'thrbughtheoontaining box adjacent the endo the'spool.
In the handling of music rolls of the usual construction it is often necessaryjto exercise great care when ll yin Athem'Adovcfn upon any smooth surface inori-'r that they may not roll fromthe top of the bible, cabinet or! the likeupomwliich they may-hoppen to be placed? This is 4:due to the circular flanges Yofthe note sheet spool. Music rolls are usually packed in small boxes approximating in interior cross section the diameter of the end flanges o1 the spool. It has been observed that these boxes are very apt to breuk through where the periphery of vthe end Hanne contacts with the bottom of the box. rl he note sheet spool is generally entirely supported within the box by contact of the spool flanges with the bottoni of the box nt only two oints. When the box conr:lining its spool 1s roughly handled the note sheet spool, being much heavier than the box. tends to deliver concentrated blow upon the two points; nliere the unges contact with the bottom of the box. `'lo he limited area. of Contact, therefore, may be nttribu ted the ,/t'rei'ein the spool "fing end il Vit 1s octagonal center .is at the axis belreadily understood that a note sheet spool 7o provided with such flanges will no l box.
frequent The present invention seeks to over` suggested. The
boxes. collie the difficulties here mcuns herein shown for desired result will new be described.
Fig. 1 .of the drawings shows n note sheet spool embodying the present invention and comprises a spindle 1 havunges 2 and 3 :my suitable manner. The usual recesses are provided in the hubs of the flanges for engagement by the usual shafts journaled in" the spool box of a piano. The periphery of the spool fl irregular, and specifically 'in the drawings in shape, with strnight or` tions 4 forming chords of a circle W ose of the spool. It will t readily roll along the surface of o table or the like, btitvvill remain substantially in the position in which it is first placed.
Referring to the ventioli: The shape of vthe flange herein shown ennb'les boxes of smaller cross section to be used with this type of music roll, than could .be used if the end flan: es were circulur us generally the ruse. 'i 1l an economy of box material., and furthermore. us .shown in Fig. 3, thespool flan es `will have u substantial ureazoffeoritact wlth,

Thus it will be :ipporent thzitwlien Ilu music roll Within its dlcll lll form* of the bl roll upon( tributed over this coiulition vv danger of breaking the muteriul of the box.
l t is to by understood tlsut the present invention muy be variously modi bodied wi claims.
I claim us my invention:
l. A note sheet spool having pol gonal end [langes: said spool being adapte to fit ow delivered y the a substantial area, and theftill greatly minimize the fied and ein?r i rhin the scope of the subjoined within a container of square cross-section,
thereby providinsubstantial :i1-cas of con,
tact between'sai end anges and the in- Lerior of said container.
2. A n ote sheet spool having octagonal md Hongos, said spool being adapted to fit Nithin acontainer of square cross-section,
thereby providing substantial :irons of con tact between said und nnges and the interior of the container.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my llame to this specification this 9th day of November, 1916.
JOSEPH H. CHASE
