CONTROL DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2%, i918.
- Application filed April 17, 1917. Serial No. 162,781.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM SHAKE- SPEARE, J r., and WILLIAM SoHMn), citizens of the United States, residing at the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Control Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in control devices.
Our improved control device is especially designed by us for use in operating priming devices for internal combustion engines and we have shown our improvements in the form in which we have embodied them for that purpose although they are capable and advantageous for use in other relations.
The main objects of this invention are: V
First, to provide an improved control device which may be conveniently mounted on the steering post of an automobile.
Second, to provide an improved control device which is simple and compact in structure and very convenient to operate.
Third, -to provide an improved control device in which the adjusting lever is held in its adjusted positions by friction, and in which the means for adjusting the securing strap are readily accessible without removing any of the other parts of the structure.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
We accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly ,defined and pointed out in the claims. f
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanyin drawing forming a part of this specification, in which: i
Figure I is a side elevation of a portion of a steering post showing our improved control device secured thereto.
Fig. II is an enlarged detail section taken on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. I.
Fig. III is an enlarged detail section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. I. Fig. IV is an enlarged detail section on a line corresponding to line 4- 1 of Fig. II,
showing the details of the adjustment for the securing strap.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, the reference character 1 indicates a cup-shaped base plate provided with a flange-like rim 1. The base plate is substantially circular in plan except that it is provided with a laterally extending bracket 2 having an extension 3 which is folded upon itself at 4 to provide a'clamp for receiving the end of the sheath 5 of a Bowden cable.
bottom of the raised channel by means of a rivet 12, a fiber friction washer 13 being interposed between the face plate and the head of the rivet. The flange of the base plate and the edge of the control lever are in frictional engagement and tend to hold the control lever in any of its adjusted positions. If desired, these fiber washers may be omitted.
The face plate is provided with an integral projection forming a finger piece 14 and with an aperture 15 which pivotally receives the end of the reciprocable wire 16 of the Bowden cable.
A lug 17 punched from the face plate cooperates with the limiting stops 17 formed in the rim of the base plate to limit the motion of the face plate or control lever in base plate. The opposite end of the strap 18 is provided with a threaded sleeve 21, which is secured to the base plate by means of the screw 22. The head of the screw is accessible through the hole 23 in the face late.
p The free end of the Bowden cable is adapted to be secured to the priming-device or other device which it is desired to adjust and hold in its adjusted position.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cupped base plate having a flange-like rim with a peripheral notch therein providing stops and a transverse channel providing a support seat, said base plate being provided with an integral laterally exten ing bracket folded upon itself to provide a clamp, a bolt disposed through the arms of said clamp, said bracket being provided with an integral nut-engaging lug, a disk-like control lever constituting a face plate provided with an integral extension at one edge having a quarter twist therein providing a finger piece and an integral stop eoacting with said stops of said base plate, a pivot for said lever disposed through the raised portion of said base plate, said lever having frictional engagement with the rim of said base plate, there being a friction washer disposed on said pivot between its head and said face plate, a Bowden cable, the sheath of which is secured in said clamp and the reciprocable member of which is connected to said lever, and means for securing said base plate to a support comprising a strap one end of which is attached by a screw disposed through the base plate, said lever being provided with an aperture through which the screw may be manipulated.
2. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cupped base plate hav ing a flange-like rim and a transverse channel providing a support seat, said base plate being provided with an integral laterally extending bracket folded upon itself to provide a clamp, a bolt disposed through the arms of said clamp, a disk-like control lever constituting a face plate provided with a finger piece, a pivot for said lever disposed through the raised portion of said base plate, said lever having frictional engagement with the rim of said base plate, there being a friction washer disposed on said pivot between its head and said face plate, a Bowden cable the sheath of which is secured in said clamp and the reciprocable member of which is connected to said lever, and means for securing said base plate to a support comprising a strap one end of which 1s attached by ascrew disposed through the base plate, said lever being provided with an aperture through which the screw may be manipulated.
