CHOKE-ROD-ADJUSTING nnvron.
Application filed February 12, 1923. Serial No. 618,730.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I," JOHN H. CIRINA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Choke-Rod- Adjusting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for adusting the position of tl e choke rod of an automobile of the Ford type when starting the engine.
It is well known that in attempting to start the engine, particularly in cold weather, that the choke rod must be raised to its extreme position, thereby cutting oif the supply of air, but that the rod generally drops by gravity and thus requires the same to be raised continually until the engine operates smoothly and regularly. In some instances it is not necessary to raise the choke rod to its maximum position to start the engine,'and in so far as I am aware, no devices have been in use wherein the raising and lowering of the said choke rod could be effected whereby the proper gas and air mixture could be had as necessity requires.
The object, therefore, of my invention is the provision of a clamping device and guide adapted for cooperation with the choke rod so that the same can be raised and lowered when starting the engine. In order to more fully understand my invention, at-
' tention is directed to the following drawings, showing a perferred embodiment thereof, wherein;
Figure 1 is a view showing the application of my invention to the choke rod, leading to thecarburetor, not shown.
Figure 2 is a plan of the attachment or clamp and Figure 3 is a side view.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 5 designates a section of the instrument board and 6 the choke rod, extending there-through, the upper end of said rod having a hand knob 7 whereby said rod may be raised and lowered as required. A plate 8 provided with a flange 9 is secured beneath the instrument board 5 though the medium of the screws or fastening element 10. The plate 8 is provided with an arm or 1 extension 11, said'arm-being bent slightly outwardly aslat 12and' disposed at-an obtuse angle toward its end 13, said arm constituting the stationary part of the device. Ref erence being had to Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing, it will be seen that the plate 8 is provided with apertures 1 1, which receive the inwardly bent tongues 15, formed on the end of a movable arm or plate 16, it being observed that the said plate is also bent opposite to the portion 12 and that the end of the said plate 16 is also disposed at an obtuse angle toward its end 17 so as to form a Y on the extreme outer end. A coil spring 18 is connected at one end 19 to the stationary plate and at its opposite end 20 to the movable plate. The tongues 15 above referred to are not clamped to the plate 8, but on the other hand extend freely through the apertures 14: so that the plate 16 may pivot for movement against the resistance of the spring 18.
In assembling the device, after the plate 8 has been screwed to the instrument board, the movable arm 16 is brought toward the choke rod 6 and in contact with the same whereupon the end of the coil spring 18 is secured thereto, thus clamping and gripping the rod but permitting the same to be raised and lowered since said rod is held purely by the said arm 16. In this manner, it will be seen that various degrees of adjustment may be had as when starting an engine,
particularly in cold weather, and after the desired effect is had, the rod 6 may be lowered to its normal position as is well understood.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is 1. In combination with the choke rod of an air regulating valve, a stationary arm, an arm pivoted to the stationary arm and frictionally engaging the choke rod and resilient means connecting the free ends of said arms permitting the sliding movement of said rod.
2. In combination with the choke rod of an air regulating valve, a stationary arm, an arm pivoted to the stationary arm and frictionally engaging the choke rod and a spring connecting the outer ends ofthe stationary and movable arms permitting the sliding movement of the choke rod to various positions.
3. In combination with the choke rod of an air regulating valve, a stationary arm having apertures therein and a flange for connection to the dash board of the automobile, a movable arm provided with tongues at one end extending through the said apertures, the opposite ends of said arms'being bent in opposed directions and resilient means connecting the bent ends of the arms permitting the choke rod to slide to various, 20
' adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN H. CIRINA. 11. 8.
