CHICAGO,
ILLINOIS, Assrenon ILLInois, a Conronarron.
CLASP.
Application led July 19, 1917. Serial No. 181,463.
To all whom z' may concern:
Be it known that I, HALFDAN J. NoRDsETH, a subject of the King of Norway, residing in hicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use- Improvements in Clasps, of which I declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
e present invention, while designed more particularly to provide an improved clasp for arm bands, will be found adapted to various other articles in which it may be desired to provide a covered clasp of the character hereinafter described. Prior to my present invention, it has been the practice to form an arm band by first joining the ends of the elastic strip of which the band is composed by means of a metal clip and then covering this clip with a metal clasp of ornamental character. The use of such a metal clasp has been found objectiona le, however, not merely because it tends to discolor or tarnish the shirt sleeves, but also because the metal does not always harmonize with the material of which the arm band is formed.
he object of my present invention is to rovide a covered metal clasp, the covering eing of any desired fabric and being held in such manner that it cannot be displaced and its raw edges are not exposed. To this end, the invention consists in the features of improvement hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and particularly pointed out in the claims at the end of this specication.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an arm band having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view of the body of the arm band showing one way in which its ends may be connected together before my improved clasp is applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the manner of forming the covered clasp. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing the ends of the fabric covering folded on to the body of the clasp. Fig. 5 is a detail end view of the clasp ready to be applied for use. Fig. 6 is a view in cross section on line 6 6 of Fig. l..
Referring to the specific embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawing, A. designates the body of the arm Speccation of Letters Patent.

band that may be formed of any suitable elastic material; B denotes the usual metal clip by which the ends of the elastic band are joined together, and C denotes a bow of ribbon, or like ornamental material, that may be placed over the united ends of the elastic band before my improved clasp D is applied thereto.
The body portion S of my improved clasp consists of a metal strip of suitable length adapted to .encircle the clip B and J[he joined ends of the band A, or other material to be inclosed by the clasp. This metal strip 8 is inclosed bv a covering 9 of flexible material, such as silk or like fabric. In forming my improved clasp, the fabric covering 9 is cut of somewhat greater length than the length of the strip S and of sufticient width to more or less completely en circle the strip, the edges of the fabric being brought approximately together after it has een passed around the strip, upon what will be the inside of the metal strip when the latter is bent, .as shown in Fig. 3, to form the improved clasp. The edges of the fabric may be attached together or to the.
strip, if desired, by paste or glue. the fabric covering 9 has been folded about the metal strip, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, the body of the covered strip will e bent, as indicated in Fig. 5, and the ends of the fabric covering 9 that extend beyond the ends of the metal strip 8 will be folded inward. clasp will then b meet, on the inside of the my improved joined ends of arm band. lli/Then clasp is thus bent about the the arm band, as shown in the drawing, it will be seen that the free ends of the fabric covering which extend beyond the ends of the metal strip, will be held securely in place between the end portions of the clasp and the material which the clasp encircles and the raw edges of the fabric covering will be concealed.
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a band, of a clasp encircling said band comprising a bent metal strip having a fabric covering extending around said strip, the ends of said fabric TO A. STEIN & COMPANY, 0F
lill@ covering being folded inward between the adjacent ends of said strip and said band.
2. The combination With fi bend 0f 2 claspencircling' said bland comprising a bent metal strip having a fabric covering of niaterially greater length than said strip, the ends of said fabric covering being extended around the ends of said strip and folded inward between the adjacent ends of said strip and said band.
tive cents each, Washingtogn.
3. The combination with the material to be inclosed, of a clasp comprising a metal strip bent to'erde material ,ha-vthe edges of which are npon the inner side of said bent metal strip, the ends of said fabric covering being extended around the ends of said strip and folded inward between the adjacent ends of said strip and said band.
