HAIR DRYING AN D WAVING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Application led May 10, 1917. Serial No. 167,750.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, HANNAH JAcoBs and HARRY JACOBS, citizens of the United States, and residents of Brooklyn, New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Drying and Waving Apparatus, of which the following is a speciication. y
Our invention relates to improvements in hair drying and waving apparatus and relates particularly to a portable apparatus. of this character and embodies the principle disclosed in our previous application filed on December14th, 1916, and bearing Serial Number 137026, and allowed April` 12th, 191
Our object is to provide a compact portable device of the character described which embodies the drying member and air heating and drivin means as one unit.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which will be economical in cost of manufacture.
We attain these objects by means of the apparatus shown in the drawings in which; Figure I is a side view, partly in section, of our device and Fig. II is an end view of same.
Referring to the parts 1 designates a casing having a tangentially projecting drying unit formed thereon; the said drying unit consisting of an outer tube 2, and an inner tube 3 securely and concentrically fastened together by means of the head 4, made of heat resisting material.
The inner tube 3 is attached to the head 4:, through its central opening 5 and is formed with the perforations 5 and 6 which act as inlets and outlets. The outer tube 2 is pron vided with one or more peripheral outlets 7 and in juxtaposition to the said outlets 7 there is provided an air deiecting rim o1- collar 8.
Concentrically located within the casing 1, is a fan 9-which is caused to rotate by means of a suitable motor 10 within the casing 1. An electrical heating element 2, is also located within the casing 1 on the side opposite the said motor 10 and is adapted to heat the air as it is drawn into the fan compartment of the casing 1.
A wire mesh or screen 12 is provided in the opening 13 leading to the fan compartment. A. handle 14 is attached to the casing secured to the upper portion of the device to provide a means for suspending same when desired.
Electrical uid for operating the motor 10 and heating element 11 is provided from any suitable source by means of the conductor 16.v
Proper controlling switches may be {lirovided upon the apparatus or apart om same.
In operation, the hair, to be dried and waved, is wound upon a stem in the usual manner and placed within the inner tube 3 of the drying unit; the opening 5 being suitably closed with cotton or otherwise. The device is then suspended or held in position by any suitable means and the electrical current turned on. A
The rotation of the fan 9, by means of its centrifugal action drives the air through the opening 13 to the fan compartment.
.The swiftly driven hot air through the drying unit causes the rapid drying of the hair upon the stem within the said unit.
It is obvious that a screw blade fan may readily be used in place of the centrifugal fan shown and the heating element may be placed within the tube 2 if desired.
It is also obvious that we may embody various other modications to our invention without departin from the spirit of same. We do not, there ore wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the particular construction shown.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a portable hair drying and waving apparatus, a drying member adapted to engage and inclose a winding stem having hair wound thereon, a fan casing formed integrally with said drying member, a fan located therein and adapted to force air through the said drying member, means for heating the air as it is vdrawn into the fan casing, means for rotating 'said fan and a handle formed upon the said casing and provided to aford a means yfor holding the apparatus in juxtaposition to the head.
2. In a portable hair drying and waving apparatus, a ldrying member adapted to engage a winding stem having hair wound thereon, a fan casing formed integrall with the said drying member, a handle ormed upon the said casing and provided to afford a means for holding the apparatus in juxtaposition to the head, a fan located Within 1.1.0
