Specification of Letters Patent.

' Patented Mar. is, 1918.

Application filed March 2, 1917. Serial No. 151,907.

To all whom it may concern: c

Be it known that 1, JOHN HUszAn, a subject of the King of Hungary, resident of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Nad- Cutters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in wad cutters, and particularly to types which are manually operated.

The principal object of the inventionis to provide a device by means of which circular wads or washers of leather, felt, or other fabric may be accurately, readily, and easily out.

A further object is to provide means combined with the device, whereby, when a certain quantity of the wads have been cut, that the same may be ejected from the cutter head.

These and other like objects are attained by the novel design, construction, and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a cutter made in accordance with the invention.

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a fragmental view of the same, showing the parts in another position, and

Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 4% of Fig. 2.

The implement consists of a metallic head 10 preferably having a knurled or corrugated exterior in order to enable it to be firmly grasped by the hand of the operator, the upper portion being suited to receive blows from a hammer or the like; formed inte grally with the handle of the implement is an operative head 12, usually of larger diameter, and containing a cylindrical opening 14 corresponding with the wad to be cut.

The cutting is accomplished by the beveled conical wall 15 the same being sharpened to an acute edge 16 adapted to be ground or otherwise renewed as the implement becomes dulled by use.

Extending upward from the bore 14 into the handle 10 is an opening 19 while further extending above the opening 19 is a smaller bore 20 adapted to receive the plungerstem 21 united to the plunger head 22, all of these several parts being freely slidable and pressed normally downward by the action of the helically coiled spring 23, one end of which rests against the upper surface of the plunger head 22 and the other against ashoulder 25 formed in the handle.

A longitudinal recess 26 is formed through the side walls of the head terminating at its upper end in an angular passage 27 the slot being receptive of the stem 30, formed with an operating head 81 extending out wardly, while the inner end of the stem is rigidly engaged in the plunger 22.

In operation, the material to be cut is placed upon any level surface, preferably of relatively soft material, as a wooden block, whereupon the head of the implement is placed on the material, the handle 10 being held so as to steady the implement, a blow from a mallet, hammer, or the like delivered upon its upper end, causing the edge 16 to cut the material forcing the wad upward into the cylindrical bore 14, this operation being continued until the here is filled with the wads, it being understood at the time that the stem 30 is held in the slot 27.

When it is desired to deliver the cut wads from the bore of the implement, the knob 31 is turned so as to bring the stem 30 into alinement with the open slot 26 thus releasing the plunger head 22 for movement imparted by the spring 23 whereupon the plunger head will eject the wads from the head and the implement is ready for further use.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a head having a cylindrical bore terminating in a cutting edge, a handle integral with said head, said handle being adapted to be manually operated and receive the concussive effect of a blow, of a plunger movable in the bore of said head, a stem attached thereto extending upward in said handle, a spring circumjacent of said stem, and adapted to press said plunger downwardly, and means engaged with said stem for holding said plunger in a raised position, said holding means extending laterally outward through said head.

2. In an implement of the class described,

the combination with a knurled handle having an upper end adapted toreceive blows,

of a plunger slidable forcing said plunger downward, said head containing a reversed L shaped sl'otextend ing through its wall, a pin aflixed in the periphery of said plunger extending through 10 said slot; anda head on said pin whereby it may be guided from. the vertical element of said slot into the branch thereof.

In testimony whereof I have a'fiixed my signature this 10th day of February, 1917.
