REAMER.
earner.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 19113.
Application filed April 3, 1912. Serial No. 688,223.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, John H. lsoooo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Putnam, in the county of 1V indham and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rean'iers, of: which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wood working tools and has special reference to a reamer designed to cut the rotten wood out of a living tree without injuring the live wood.
The principal object of the invention is to improve and simplify the general construction of devices of this character.
A second object of the invention is to provide an improved form of reainer wherein the blade is yielclably mounted so that it will only cut the soft decayed wood, the blade receding when the harder wood is engaged.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel constructions, combinations and ar' rangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying d swings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and: Figure 1 is a plan view partly in section of a reamer constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section of such a reamer.
The reamer comprises a body 10 having a centrally disposed aperture 11 wherein is held a shank 12 provided with a tang 12- adapted to fit a brace of the ordinary type. The body 10 is preferably connected to the shank 12 by a driving fit. In the forward end of the body 10 there is provided a pair of oppositely disposed radial openings lat wherein are driven tubes 15, each provided with oppositely disposed slots 16 intermediate its ends. In these tubes 15 are fitted plungers 17 which carry cutter blades 18 having their rear portions curved as indicated at 19 so that the blades may be readily withdrawn from the holes after the boring operation is finished or in the event that the hole is undercut. in order to hold the blades in their ICSPUUtlVQ tubes a pin 20 is passed through each plunger 17 so that its ends extend through the slots it In order to force the blades outwardly so that they will cut all of the rotten wood away there is nrovided between the end of each plunger and the end of the opening H: a coil spring 21 which rotates the blade outward. It is, of course, to be understood that the blades 18 are sharp so that they will cut the rotten wood properly.
In using the device the same is placed in the socket of an ordinary brace and rotated therewith in contact with that part of the tree which it is desired to remove. The blades 18 cut away the decayed wood but when they come in contact with the harder wood they will move toward each other compressing the springs 21 which are of just sullicient strength to force the blades outward in rotten wood but weak enough to yield when live wood is engaged.
There has thus been provided and c'llicient device of the kind described, and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and constructum of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof and it is therefore not wished to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, is
1.. A reamer of the class described comprising a body, a shank extending from the body, a tang on said shank, lateral tubes extending from said body, a plunger in each of said tubes, :1. cutting blade carried on the outer end of each plunger, a spring normally urging said plunger outimrdly, and means to limit the outward movement of the plunger.
2. In a reamcr of the class described, a body, a shank extending from said body, a tang on said shank, said body being provided with oppositely disposed inclined radial a simple openings, tubes driven in said openings, each of sald tubes havlng opposltely dlsposed slots therein, a plunger movable longitudinally in each of said tubes, a cutter blade carried on the outer end of each plunger, a
pin extending through each of said plungers and the slots of the respective tube, and a spring in said tube bearing against the inner In testimony whereof I hereunto afi iX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
