PUNCHING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST MAKER, a citizen of the Uni ed States, residing at Santa -Rosa, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in funohlng Devices, of which the following is a speclfication.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for simultaneously producing a d scharge aperture and a vent aperture 1n cans or like receptacles containing liquids, to enable the contents of the ean to be discharged through one of the orifices or apertures and to admit air through the other aperture to prevent the formation of a vacuum within the receptacle which would otherproved device;

Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device of this character wherein provision is made for adjusting the puncturing devices toward and away from each other to adapt the device to cans of varying sizes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including puncturing devices movable toward and.
away from each other, and means whereby the puncturing devices may be detached for sharpening or replacing broken or impaired portions.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim; and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention:

The improved device comprises a frame including a lower member 10 for carrying the puncturing devices, and members 11 rising from the terminals of the lower member 10, and an upper member 12 which like-' wise constitutes a hand grip to enable the implement to be operated, the upper part of the member 12 is curved upwardly and the up- Wardly curving portion turned over as shown Specification of Letters Patent.

at 13 to increase the grip and likewise reinforce and stiffen the frame. The lower member 10 of the frame is provided with a lon itudinally directed guide slot 14.
S lidably dlsposed upon the member 10 of the frame are coacting punching devices, precisely alike and interchangeable. Each punching device comprises a body or head portion 15 ointed at one end as shown at 16, and for ed or bifurcated at the upper portion to form a seat represented at 17, to receive the portion 10 of the frame, as shown in Fig. 1. The seat 17 corresponds in depth to the width of the member 10 including its slot 14:, so that the upper end of the body is even with the upper line of the member 10. Inserted through each of the forked portions of the members 15 is a combined dividing and holding bar or pin 18, the latter bearin against the upper and lower sides of the slot 15, the pins and the slot coacting to retam the punch devices in parallel relation to the frame. By this means the bodies 15 are secured in position upon the portion 10 of the frame, while at the same time they are free to be moved longitudinally of the latter to enable the points 16 to be adjusted near to or farther from each other. The punching members may thus be readily attached to and detached from the frame by removing the pins 18, so that if the points become dulled or otherwise impaired they can be sharpened or renewed without discarding the remainder of the device.
By forming the frame with the member 10 of considerable length the improved implement may be readily adapted to cans of varylng s1zes.
In operating the improved device one of the points 16 is disposed in position upon the can where it is desiredto form a discharge openmg or orifice, and the other point 16 disposed as remotely as possible from the other point to serve as a vent, or to permit the entrance of air to facilitate the discharge of the contents of the can.
, The improved implement may likewise be employed for forming any required number of the apertures as will be obvious.
The improved implement is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and of any suitable material and of any suitable strength.

, Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
An implement of the class described comprising a supporting frame including an upper hand grip member and a lower member divided by a longitudinally directed slot 10 into inner and outter parts, coacting punching and puncturing devices each including a puncturing-point and a bifurcated portion forming a, seat to receive both parts of the slotted member, and s extendin respectively through the bifurcated portlons and 15 through the slot whereby the puncturing devices are slidably coupled to the frame.
