Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, NIGl-IOLAS DE SANTIs and LOUIS DE SANTIS, both subjects of the King of Italy, and residents of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented anew and Improved Stamping-Machine, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to the art of stamping novelty designs on textile fabrics.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved stamping machine more especially designed to dispense with the expensive handwork now generally employed and arranged to facilitate the stamping to turn out a large amount of accurately stamped goods without the aid of skilled labor.
In order to accomplish the desired result use is made of a table over which the fabric is drawn from a roll, a reciprocating platen provided with a stencil reciprocating toward and from the table to make an impression on the fabric stretched over the table, and drawing means operating synchronously with the said platen and adapted to engage the outer end of the stamped portion of the fabric to draw the latter off the table and to draw an unstamped portion of the fabric onto the table during the time the platen is out of the stamping position. Use is also made of means to release the drawing means according to the length of the design stamped on the fabric at the time.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indi cate corresponding parts in all the views.

The stain-ping machine is mounted on a suitably constructed frame 10 provided with a table 11 over which the fabric 12 to be stamped is drawn, the fabric being mounted on a roll 13 removably held in suitable bearings l l attached to the rear end of the frame 10. The fabric 12 as it unrolls passes over a guide roller 15 and thenonto the table 12. In order to stamp the fabric with a novelty design use is made 'of a stencil '20 disposed parallel with the table above the same. and the margin of the stencil 20 is removably secured to projections 21 depend ing from a platen 22 in the form of a plate, as plainly indicated in the drawings. the arrangement described the stencil 20 forms with the platen 22 a chamber 23 filled with paint or ink to supply the stencil with ink and thus make an impression on the stencil moving in contact with the portion or" the fabric held on the table 11 at the time. The platen-22 is reciprocated in a vertical direction. and is provided with depending slides 24 engaging guideWays 25 arranged on the sides of the frame 10, and the platen 22 is also provided with transversely ex tending arms 26 pivotally connected by pitmen 27 with crank disks 28 secured on the ends of a transverse shaft 29 journaled in suitable bearings arranged on the main frame 10. On the shaft 29 is. secured a gear wheel 30 in mesh with a gear wheel 31 secured on a main driving shaft 32 journaled in suitable bearings on the main frame 10. The driving shaft 32 is provided with a pulley 33 connected by a belt 34 with other machinery for imparting a continuous rotary motion to the shaft 32 which, by the gear wheels 31 and 30, imparts a rotary motion to the shaft 29 whereby an up and down sliding movement is given to the platen 22 by the crank disks 28 and the pit.-

slide in guideways 4 2 formed. lengthwise on the main frame 10, and the carrier 41 is provided at the underside with a rack 43in mesh with a gearwheel 44 secured on a transverse shaft 45 journaled in suitable bearings arranged on the main frame 10. On the shaft 45 is secured a gear wheel 46 in mesh with a rack 47 mounted to slide in a longitudinal guideway 48 attached to one 'side of the main frame 10 as plainly indi-' cated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The rack 47 is,
pivotally connected by a pitman 50 with a crank arm 51 forming part of the main shaft 32 so that when the latter is rotated a reciprocating motion is given to the rack 47 which by thegear wheel 46 rotates the shaft 45 which in turn imparts a forward and backward reciprocatingmotion to the carrier 41 by the gear wheel 44 in mesh with the rack 43;
The gripping device 40 is adapted to grlp the forward end of the fabric at or near the sides thereof and it consists of a gripping member or finger 60 in the form of a transverse plate fixed on the carrier 40, and two adjustable and movable. gripping fingers 61 coacting with the gripping member 60 to grip the fabric between them. The gripping member 60 projects rearwardly from the carrier 41 and is adapted to pass into a recess or cut-out portion formed in the forward end of the table 11. Each gripping finger 61 is adj ustably secured by a set screw 62 on a transverse shaft 63 journaled in brackets 59 attached to or forming part of the carrier 41. By the arrangement described the gripping fingers 61 can be adjusted toward or from each other on the shaft 68 to grip narrow or wide fabrics 11 between the gripping fingers 61 and their coacting gripping member 60. It will also be noticed that the gripping fingers 61 can be adjusted up or down on the shaft 68 to grip thicker or thinner fabrics 11. Near each end of the shaft 63 is secured an arm 64, pivotally connected with the upper end of a tripping lever 65 pivoted at 66 on the carrier 41. The lower end of the tripping lever 65 is adapted to engage a stop 67 held on one end of a bolt 68 adjustably secured in a horizontal 'slot'69' formed in the corresponding side of the main frame 10. It
will be noticed that when the carrier 41 moves from the left to the right the lower end of the lever 65 engages the stop 67 whereby a swinging movement'is given to the lever 65 and the latter thus imparts a swinging movement to the arm 64 to engage the gripping fingers 61 with the top of the fabric 12 and thusclamp the same onto the top of the othergripping member 60. When this position is reached the carrier is at the end of its travelvfrom the left to the right.
When the carrier 41 is moved from the right to theleft then the gripping fingers 60, 61 in conjunction withthe-carrier 41 exert a pull on the fabric 12 thus drawing the same over the table 11 from the right to the left, and when the desired portion of the fabric has been drawn over the table a desired length then the gripping devices simultaneously are tripped to disengage the gripping fingers 61 from the forward end of the stamped fabric portion.
The tripping arm 70 extends into the path of the lower end of the corresponding lever 65, and this tripping arm 70 is secured or formed on one end of a bolt 71 held ad justable in a longitudinal slot 72 formed in the corresponding side of the main frame 10. The swinging movement of the tripping arm 70 from the right to the left is limited by the arm abutting against a stop pin 73 held on a bracket 74 attached to'or ping fingers 60 upward out of engagement,

The carrier 41 on its further outward movement carries the free ends of the levers 65 past the tripping arms 7 0 and when the carrier 41 is on the return stroke and the lower ends of the'levers 65 come in contact with the tripping arms 70 then the latter can swing downward to the right to allow the lower ends to pass. l/Vhen this has been done the tripping arms 70 swing back to their normalpositions by the action of the springs 75. 7 It is understood that the tripping arms 70 are set nearer the forward end of the table 11 whenever it is desired to draw a short length of the fabric onto the table and thetripping arms 70 are set farther outward for drawing an increased length of fabric onto the table. It

During this downward movement.- of the platen 22 the fabric 12 is cut transversely at the forward end of the table'll by the use of a transver'seknife 80 attached to the for- 7 Ward end of the platen 22. It is understood that the cutting edge of this knife 80 coacts with the forward end of the table 11 to cut the fabric transversely adjacent the forward end of the impression made at the time by the stencil -20. It is understood that the ink used in the chamber 23 is in *a paste or a semi-fluid form; When makin the im ression a, suflicient amount of the ink passes through the stencil openings onto the fabric to produce the corresponding design thereon.
The operation is as follows:
When the several parts are in the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, then the forward end of thefabric 12 is clamped by the fingers 60 onto the carrier 41, and the latter now moves from the right to the left thus drawing the previously stamped portion of the fabric over the table 11 and drawing an unstamped portion of the fabric onto the table. When the gripping devices register with the tripping devices then the fingers 60 are simultaneously swung upward and the forward end of the fabric is released. Atthis time the platen 22 has moved downward to cause the stencil 20 to make an impression on the unstainped portion of the fabric overlying the table 11 at the same time the knife- 80 cuts oif the previously stamped fabric from the newly stamped fabric and the cut-off piece is removed by the operator. The platen 22, after the impression has been made, moves immediatelv upward and during this time the carrier-4C1 is returned and the gripping fingers 60 are reengaged with the forward end of the fabric and the above described operation is repeated.
T he stamping machine shown and described requires no skilled operators and a large amount of work can be turned out in a comparatively short time.
Having thus described our'invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a stamping machine for stamping textile fabrics with novelty designs, a table a platen provided with a stencil and inking means for the same. reciprocating means moving the platen toward and from the table, longitudinally reciprocating gripping means for drawing a fabric over the table at the time the stencil is out of contact with the fabric, a fixed cutter on the forward end of the said platen to cut off a previously stamped portion of the fabric, and actuating means connected with the said reciprocating means and the said drawing means to actuate the said platen and thesaidgripping means in timed relation.
2. In a stamping machine for stamping novelty designs onto a textile fabric, a table, a gripping device at the forward end of the table and adapted to grip the forward end of a piece of textile fabric to be drawn over the said table, a reciprocating carrier on which the said gripping device is mounted to move the latterforward and backward, the gripping device during the forward movementdrawing a previously stamped portion of the fabric oif the table and drawing an unstamped portion of the fabric onto the table, a platen reciprocating toward and from the said table and provided with a stencil adapted to stamp a novelty design onto the fabric portion resting on the table at the time the impression is made, a cutting device on the forward end of the platen and operating in conjunction with the forward edge of the table to cut the fabric at the descent of the platen, and mechanism connected with the said platen and the said carrier to actuate the same in timed relation.
3. In a stamping machine for stamping novelty designs onto a textile fabric, a ta: ble, a'gripping device at the forward end of the table and adapted to grip the forward end of a piece of textile fabric to be drawn over the said table a reciprocating carrier on which the said. gripping device is mounted to move the latter forward and aekward, the gripping device during the forward movement drawing a previously stamped portion of the fabric off the table and drawing an unstamp'ed portion of the fabric onto the table, a platen reciprocating toward and from the said table and provided with a stencil adapted to stamp a novelty design onto the fabric portion rest ing on the table at the time the impression is made, mechanism connected with the said platen and the said carrier to actuate the same in timed relation, and tripping devices in the path of the said gripping device to trip the latter to cause it to grip and release the fabric.
4:. In a stamping machine for stamping novelty designs onto a textile fabric, a table, a gripping device at the forward end of the table and adapted to grip the forward end of a piece of textile fabric to be drawn over the said table, reciprocating carrier on which the said gripping device is mounted to move the latter forward and backward, the gripping device during the forward movement drawing a previously stamped portion of the fabric off the table and drawing an unstamped portion of the fabric onto the table, a platen reciprocating toward and from the said table and provided with a stencil adapted to stamp a novelty design onto the fabric portion resting on the table at the time the impression is made, mechanism connected with the said platen and the said carrier to actuate the same in timed relation, and a tripping device in the path of the said gripping device to trip the latter, the said tripping device being adjustable to trip the gripping device at any point in the travel of the carrier.

In a stamping machine forstamping a design on a fabric, a table over which the fabric is to be drawn, a reciprocating platen above the table, a lon itudinally reciprocating carrier at the front end of the table, a gripping device mounted on the forward end of the carrier and including a pivoted tripping lever, a' stop on the frame of the table ing carrier at the front end of the table, a
transverse shaft on the carrier and having arms at its ends, gripplng fingers carried by the shaft, trippinglevers mounted on the carrier and each having one end pivoted to an arm of the shaft, and stops on the frame of the table and with which the tripping arms engage to move the fingers into gripping position.
7. In a stamping machine for stamping a design on a fabric, a table'over which the fabric is drawn, a longitudinally reciprocating carrier, a transverse shaft on the carrier and having arms at its ends, gripping fingers on the shaft, tripping levers mounted on the carrier and each having one end pivoted to an arm of the said shaft, stops on the frame of the table and with which the lower ends of the tripping levers engage to move the fingers into gripping position, and a pivoted and spring pressed tripping arm with which the tripping levers engage to release the gripping fingers.

In a stamping machine for stamping a design on a fabric, a table over which the fabric is drawn, a longitudinally reciprocating carrier, a transverse shaft on the carrier and having arms at its ends, gripping fine gers on the shaft, tripping levers pivoted intermediate of their ends on the carrier and each having one end pivoted to an arm of the shaft, an adjustable stop on the frame of the tableand with which the lower ends of the tripping levers engage to move the gripping fingers into gripping position, and a yieldingly mounted stop on table frame and with which the lower ends of the tripping levers engage to release the gripping fingers.
9. In a stamping machine, a table over which the fabric passes, a carrier mounted to slide on the table and having a rack on its under side,-a gear wheel meshing with the rack, a gear wheel on the shaft of the first named gear wheel, a sliding rack engaging the last named gear wheel, a driving shaft, means for operating the rack from said shaft, a vertically reciprocating platen above the table and means for reciprocating the platen from the driving shaft.
