IDENTIFICATION-TAG.
Application filed January 18, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL J. W. DE Fonnns'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Identification-Tags, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices whereby identification or name tags may be supported upon a structure and rendered inaccessible except by destroying a part of the supporting means. v
The improved device may be applied to various structures, but is more particularly applicable to automobiles, but it is not desired to limit the use of the device in any particular.
By employing the improved device the automobile or other apparatus or structure is thus protected and its identification assured in event of its being stolen.
In the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device.
Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the tag locking member.
Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the base or support for the tag and the looking member.
Fig. 4; is an enlarged vertical section on the line 4-4. of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved device comprises a base or holding portion including a rear plate 10 adapted to be attached to the structure which is to be pr0tected,-for instance some portion of a body of an automobile. The member 10 will preferably be provided with a plurality of apertures 11 to receive holding screws when the device is applied to a wood or like structure, and likewise provided with slots 12 spaced apart to receive holding clips 13 bent intermediate their ends, as shown in Fig. 5 and adapted to be passed through corresponding slots in the structure to which the device is to be attached, as for instance a plate or sheet metal part of the automobile, a portion of which is indicated at 14:. When secured by the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1218.
Serial No. 143,125.
clips 13 one portion of the clip will be disposed within the member 14 While the other portion of the clip is disposed against the inner face of the member 10, as shown in Fig. 5. The portion of the clip which engages the member 10 lies flatly against the same. The member 10 is likewise provided wardly therefrom near the lower edge, as shown in Fig. 3.
The member 10 is provided at its ends with guard devices 16 and with a similar guard device 17 at the lower edge. The terminal guard devices 16 are formed with inwardly directed flanges 18, while the bot tom guard member 17 is provided with a similar stop shoulder 19, portions of the member 1617 overhanging the stop shoulders, as shown at 20, while portions of the guard member 17 overhang the stop shoul der 19, as shown at 21. The overhanging portions of the member 16-17 and the stop shoulders 1819 form seats to receive a locking plate represented as a whole at 22, a card 23 to receive a name or other identifying matter, and a transparent member of glass or the like and represented at 24:. The member 22 is provided with a lateral rib 25 at its lower ed e and a guard member 26 at the upper e ge and with a lateral stop shoulder 27, a portion of the guard member overhanging the shoulder, as shown at 28.
The guard devices 161Z together with their overhanging portions 20 and stop shoulders 18.19 are substantially alike transversely, while the guard portion 26 with its overhanging portion 28 and stop shoulder 27 correspond transversely with the other guard members. At their upper ends the guards 1620 are beveled, while the terminals of the guard 26 are correspondingly beveled, so that when the member 22 is disposed within the seats of the members 1617 the confronting ends of the guard members will be closely united, so that the severalguard members present the appearance of a frame which completely surrounds the glass member and the identification card, as shown in Fig. 1. When the member 22 is inserted within the seats of the guard members 16 and moved downwardly the rib 25 will engage the yieldable tongues 15 and effectually prevent the withdrawal of the member 22. The member 22 is provided with apertures 29 which are so located time with resilient tongues 15 projecting inhaving the identification card 23 and the glass member 24 disposed with their upper edges in the seat formed by the stop shoulder 27 and the overhanging portion 28 of the guard 26,isinserted in the seats formed by the overhanging portions 20 and the stop shoulders 18 and moved downwardly until the rib 25 is engaged by the tongues 15. This movement will dispose the members 2324 with their outer edges rearwardly of the overhanging portions 2021 and 28 The parts are thus locked together and cannot be separated except by breaking the glass member 24: and tearing the identification card loose to expose the apertures 11, which will enable the tongues 15 to be detached from the rib 25 and release the member 22, as before described.
The name of the owner of the automobile or other structure, or other identifying matter will thus be protected and rendered inaccessible exce t by destroying the protecting glass mem er.
The improved device is constructed wholly of sheet or plate metal, preferably steel, and may be plated or otherwise ornamented, or protected. 7
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new lSrv 1. A device of the class described, comprising a base having overhanging frame members at three sides, means for attaching the base to a supporting structure, yieldable tongues carried by the base and extending into the space within the frame members, a locking member engaging the overhanging portions of said frame members and havin an inwardly directed rib engageable with the tongues, said locking member covering said base holding means and rendering the same inaccessible and having a frame member corresponding to and coacting with the frame members of the base, and a member engaging the overhanging frame members and preventing access to the tongues.
2. The combination with a support having slots therethrough, a base having slots registering with the slots of the support, holding clips engaging. intermediate their ends through said slots with the remaining portions directed laterally of the intermediate portion and bearing respectively against the outer face of the base and the inner face of the support, overhanging frame members carried by the base at three edges thereof, yieldable tongues carried by the base and extending into the space within the frame members, a locking member engaging the overhanging portions of said frame members and having an inwardly directed rib engageable with the tongues, said locking member covering the base engaging portions of said clips and maintaining them in locked position and rendering the same inaccessible, a frame member carried by the locking member and corresponding to and coacting with the frame members of the base, and a member engaging the overhanging frame members and preventing access to v the tongues.
3. A device of the class described, .comprising a base having overhanging frame members at three sides, means for attaching the base to a supporting structure, yieldable tongues carried by the base and extending into the space Within the frame members, a locking member engaging the overhanging portions of said frame members and having apertures through which the tongues are accessible and provided with an inwardly directed rib engageable with the tongues, said locking member coveringsaid base holding means and rendering the same inaccessible and having a frame member corresponding to and coacting with the frame members of the base, and a'member engaging the overhanging frame members and covering the apertures of the locking member and preventing access to the tongues.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature.
