To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnoncn A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States residing at Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Hangers. of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to clothes hangers.

The object of the invention is to provide a device capable of being extended in order that the clothes from the rear of the hanger may be removed without disturbing those upon the forward part.

Another object is to provide a hanger which may be stamped from sheet metal and put together without the use of bolts or rivets or other auxiliary fastening de- VIC/(5S.

Vith the above objects in view the invention consists of a supporting member having a longitudinal slot therein, a sliding member supported thereby, wheels carried by the said sliding member and a rack carried by the said member for supporting the clothes.

The hanger comprises a supporting member 1 formed with the side flanges 2, by means of which the said member is secured in position. This member is preferably formed of sheet metal and is stamped to provide a depending longitudinal portion 3, within which is formed a longitudinal slot 4:. The edges of this slot are turned inward as shown at 5 and 6, to provide a smooth surface upon which an axle 7 is adapted to roll. The axle 7 extends through the slot 4- and supports one end of a sliding member 8 formed in the shape of an elongated U. The axle also supports a hanger 9, the free ends of this hanger being provided with openings 10 to receive the said axle. A rack 11 preferably composed of heavy wire has one of its ends secured within the hanger 9 as shown at 12, the opposite end of the rack being secured to the end of the sliding member 8 as shown at 13. This end of the sliding member is supported upon the member 1 by means of a supporting and guiding loop 14 formed from a struck up portion of the member 1. The outer ends of the axle 7 are tapered to receive wheels 15. These wheels are preferably stamped from sheet metal and are provided with an opening 16 to receive the ends of the shaft. They are secured upon the shaft by drawing their central portion into the form of a hollow truncated cone, and driving them in position. By this means it is not necessary to use any other fastening method.

When the rack is pulled outward the weight of the free end causes the inner end to lift, and the wheels 15 to engage the under surface of the member 1. This construction provides for an easy movement of the rack the parts of the hanger all having a loose fit so that they will not i am.

From the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that the invention provides a cheap and attractive hanger for use within a closet, or other restricted space which permits ready access to the clothes hung in the rear without disturbing those upon the forward end.

Having thus described my invention, 1. claim:

1. A hanger comprising a supporting member formed with a longitudinal slot, an axle movable along said slot, wheels carried by said axle upon each side of said slot, a sliding member supported atone end upon said axle and means whereby the axle may be elevated to cause the wheels to engage said supporting member.

2. A hanger comprising a supporting member formed with a longitudinal slot, a supporting loop located at one end of said member, a sliding member movable in said 100p an axle movable along said slot, wheels carried by said axle, a hanger supported by the axle and a rack having one 5 end secured to the hanger and the other end secured to the end of the sliding member, the parts being so arranged as to cause the axle to be raised from contact with the lower edge of the slot and the engagement of the wheels With the supporting member 10 when the device is in its extended position.
