1 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
Application filed September 21, 1917. Serial No. 192,468.
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY D. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sunderland, in the county of Bennington and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammock-Cribs, of which the following is a' specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hammock cribs and the principal objects in view are to provide a portable crib for infants which may be set up in an automobile and used when traveling and when not in use to be folded compactly and readily carried and to embody in the device means for neutralizing the vibration and jolting of the automobile. The device is one which may be usedindoors or as a camp-crib outdoors and the construction is light and durable. The advantages of a portable crib for infants which may be used in automobile travel or carried and used as a camp-crib or used indoors, and when not in use may be folded in a convenient form for carriage or storage, will be obvious.
\Vith these and other objects and advantages in view, my invention consists of the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Inthe drawings which accompany and form a part of these specifications, Figure 1, is a perspective view of the crib set up and ready for use, the adjustable sides being closed; Fig. 2, is also a perspective view but with the sides in another position; Fig. 3 is an end view with sides up and shown down in dotted lines; Fig. 4 is an end view of the crib folded but with end and side flaps not fastened in place; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the crib completely folded and ready for carriage by hand.
The same reference numerals are used in the different views of the drawing to indicate the same parts of the construction.
The frame which forms the'bottom of the crib is rectangular in shape and comprises end pieces 1, 1, and side pieces 2, 2, made of light but durable material, preferably wood, suitably fastened or jointed at the corners and covered over with a fabric 3, preferably canvas. The canvas thus supported inside of the frame forms a bed-bottom with the characteristics of a hammock.
Each of the sides, 4 and 5, of this crib is constructed of two end pieces or strips 6, and 7, and a connecting side piece or strip 8, made of the same kind of material as the bottom frame. The sides are covered with a fabric 9, similar to the bottom of the crib, and on one side 4, the fabric covering is wider an'dextends beyond the side strip 8, to form a flap 10 which is used when the crib is folded up. The free ends of the end strips 6 and 7 are suitably hinged, as at 11 and 1.2, to the frame of the crib-bottom so that the sides may be pivotally moved in an arc of approximately 180 degrees. This will permit of a vertical adjustment of the sides, as shown in Fig. 1, when the crib is in use and it is desired to' close them, or
' when the crib is to be folded up these sides may be swung back against the platformbase of the crib, as shown in Fig. 4;.
Fastened to the frame of the crib-bottom, on the end pieces 2, 2, are flaps 13, 13, of canvas or other suitable fabric, forming the head and foot inclosures of the hammockcrib when in use. These flaps are made with V-shaped extensions 1%. 14, and provided with eyelets 15, 15, which engage with the stud- pins 16, 16, on the end pieces 6 and 7 of the sides when in the closed position, as
shown in Fig. 1, and with other eyelets 17, 17, placed in the ends of the V-shaped extensions which engage with the stud-pins when the sides are in the position shown in Fig. 2. \Vhen the crib is in use and being carried in an automobile with a small space between the front and rear seats, it may be found. necessary to adjust the sides to the first-mentioned position, but when there is ample space for the crib, its sides may be lowered to the second position, thus giving the baby more room and comfort.
The crib when in use is resiliently supported on a platform-base 18, by means of springs 19 and 20 interposed therebetween.
The springs may be U-shaped, as shown, and made of flat metal strips or hands with the terminals bent over and fastened securely to the bottom-frame of the crib as at 21 and to the platform-base, as at 22, but it should be understood that I do not limit myself to this construction of means to provide the resilient support for the crib. Any equivalent which will give the necessary resiliency as well as stability, without sidesway to the crib will come within the spirit of my invention.
The platform-base 18, is constructed of two flat end pieces 23 and 24, transversely placed and of suitable width to give stability to the crib, which said'piece's are connected by a longitudinal piece or strip 25, securely fastened to said .endepieces "This platform is constructed from some light but durable material, preferably Wood, and the resilient supports 19 and 20, for the crib, are secured to the end-pieces -23 and 24.
