Within the body I recess out a portion of the material approximately on the lines 7 and 8' so that other members to be later described may be readily inserted or removed and at each end of the body member I provide tapered openings extending outward on the lines 9 and 10.
Fitted in each of the tapers 9 and 10 are clamps comprising opposed members 11 and 12 and 13 and 14. These members are also tapered at an angle co-incidental to the tapers 9 and 10 and within recesses in the clampin members, I arrange springs 15 and shown the tapered portion of the body member closes the jaws together, but when the jaws are moved inward as are 13 and 14 the spm'ngs open the iaws away from each other and in this position a rope may be readily inserted.
Should it be desired that the jaws be removed it isonly necessary to move them to the position shown by 13 and 14 and then b removing the springs 17 and 18 the aws may be withdrawn. The taper of the parts prevents a removal of the jaws outwardthrough their tapered passages, and as the aws are each provided with a collar or enlargement 21, 22 and 23, the springs Wlll cause these enlargements to engage the body member and will prevent the removal of the jaws until the springs are removed. Thus it will be seen that the jaws or clamps cannot accidentally be displaced or lost.
In forming the jaws I'have constructed them so that they willpositlvely engage a rope inserted between them. To accomplish this I provide each jaw with a V- shaped trough 24 and 25 extending the full length' of the 'aw and I may roughen the interior of each shaped trough as shown at 26. It will however be understood that although at 26 I have shown longitudinal teeth or pm jections any series of corrugations or serrations may be employed.
At 27 and 28 I indicate that certain portions of the clamping members are reduced. This is merely for the purpose of reducing the frictional area of the clamping members although I may introduce a lubricant such as grease into these reduced portions.
It will be noted that the springs are introduced into annular grooves turned in the jaw members, and that these grooves are of sufficient depth to retain the springs away from the rope engaging portions of the jaws. The
grooves are, however, open and when a rope is removed the springs may be withdrawn or removed through their respective grooves.
It will also be noted that the free ends of each spring are turned inward to a very slight degree so as to prevent the springs catching on their co-incidental grooves.
Modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the principle or sacrifioin the advantages of this invention. Any 0% the proportions of my device may be changed, as the device will be constructed to provide the strength re uired for a given size of rope.
Having care ully and fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A rope clamp comprising a hollow body member having a tapered opening at each end thereof, relatively tapered jaws at each end of said body member and a spring secured within said jaws for urging them away from each other.
2. A rope clamp having a body member of generally oval shape and a central aperture therethrough, tapered apertures one at each end of said body member and relatively tapered clamps in sald tapered apertures and closed by an outward movement.
3. A rope clamphaving a generally oval shaped body member provided with a centrally disposed aperture, tapered apertures extending longitudinally of said body member and at the ends thereof, correspondingly tapered clamping members in said body member and adapted to be closed by a relative movement in said body member, each said clamping member being provided with a spring for urging the jaws of each said clamping member away from each other all combined for joint operation as and for the purpose set forth.
