Be it known that l, JOHN F. APPELL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to improvements in locks, and especially'to locks having springs for normally holding the bolt to extended 0r locked position, and wherein means is provided for rendering difficult the insertion of a key or preventing its insert-ion entirely at times.

My object is to provide a lock of simple, durable and inexpensive construction, having means forming a tortuous, complicated course for an actuating key, and further a means for preventing the insertion of an actuating key at times.

My invention consists in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully,clearly and concisely set forth in my specification, pointed out in my claims and illust-rated by the accompanying drawing, in which,-

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 5 designates the case, box or body of the lock which is substantially of rectangular cup-shape and 6 designates the base plate of the case.

Within the case and extending for at least a portion of the length thereof are the spaced walls or partitions 7 and 8, between which the bolt 9 is arranged for longitudinal movements. By preference, the walls are of less height than the case in order to form a support for the bolt, which is provided with lateral flanges 10, which extend over the walls or partitions 7 and 8, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

Extending laterally from one of the walls is an internally threaded boss 11, arranged to receive a screw 12 for holding the case and base plate together, and formed through the case and base plate are alining openings, through which the screws 13 are extended for securing the lock in place.

The numeral 111 designates a spring which acts on the bolt to normally hold it to extended or locked position.

For operating the bolt to an open or unlocked position, against the tension of the spring 11i, from within the inclosure secured by the lock and without employing a key, I provide a knob 15 whose stem is secured to the bolt and traverse slot-s such as 16,11in both the base plate and the adjacent wa Formed in the vertical wall of the case there is a key hole 17, which as shown is dis posed vertically and formed through each of the walls 7 and 8 are the key holes 18 and 19 respectively, each of which is disposed vertically to register with the key hole 17'.

Formed through the walls 7 and 8 are the key holes 20 and 21, whichare disposed at an angle to the key holes 18 and 19 and as shown, are preferably disposed horizontally.

Formed throughthe bolt is a notch or way 22, in which the key, not shown, acts to move the bolt, as is common, and formed through thek bolt is a key hole 23, which reg isters with the key holes 2O and 2l, when the bolt is in its normal extended position.

Arranged for movements lengthwise of the lock is a plate 24, disposed between the outer wall of the case and the adjacent wall 7 and to which there is secured a knob 25, whereby it may be moved manually and formed through both walls and the base plate are slots such as 26, through which the stem of the knob is inserted.

As clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the slot 26 in the base plate is surrounded by a flange in which there is formed notches 27, arranged to receive a spring detent 28 carried by the stem of the knob 25. By this means the plate 24 may be moved and held in different set positions, its one position being to clear both the horizontal and vertical key holes through the wall 7, its second position being to cover the vertical key hole and its third position being to cover both the vertical and horizontal key holes.

By this arrangement, when the plate is set to cover both key holes of the wall 7, a key cannot be inserted to the bolt, and when the plate is moved to a position covering the vertical hole of the wall 7 the key must be, after being ntrbduced in the hole v17, turned to an angle to find the hole 20,

then moved through the key hole in the bolt and through the key hole 21 in the wall 8, then turned to a vertical position and drawn forwardly through the key hole 19, where it will be in a position to act on the bolt in the notch or way 22. When plate 24 is moved to its third position uncovering both key holes in the wall 7 the key may be introduced in the usual manner. Y Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl.' A lock comprising a case provided with a vertically disposed keyhole, a pair of spaced apart walls extending lengthwise of the case, said walls being provided with keyholes in registration with the vertically disposed keyhole in the case and with horizontally disposed keyholes, a bolt provided with anges positioned between said walls, the flanges of the bolt riding on the edges of said walls, said bolt being provided with a keyhole adapted to register at-times with vra5 the horizontal keyholes of the walls, a sliding plate arranged to cover and uncover the keyholes in one of the walls and a spring held detent for holding said plate in different positions.

A lock comprising a case provided with a vertically disposed keyhole, a pair of spaced apartowalls extending lengthwise of the case and formed vertically with one wall of the case, a portion of the walls being Vspaced apart from the opposite wall of said case, said walls being provided with keyholes in registration with a vertically disposed keyhole in the case and with horizontally disposed keyholes, the vertical and horizontal keyholes in the walls communieating with each other, a bolt provided with flanges positioned between said walls, the said flanges being located between one wall ofthe case and the edges of the walls on the inside of the case, saidl bolt being priovided with a keyhole adapted to register at times with the horizontal keyholes of the walls, a stud formed on said bolt, acoil spring seated kon said stud and resting against one wall of the case, a sliding plate provided with a cut away portion arranged to cover and uncover the keyholes in one of the walls, and a spring held detent for holding said plate in diiierent positions. 3. A lock comprising a case provided with a keyhole, a pair of walls within the case spaced from the walls thereof and from each other, each of said pair of walls provided with a keyhole disposed to register with the keyhole in the case and with a second, keyhole-disposed out of registration with the keyhole in the case, and a bolt arranged for movements between said pair of walls and provided with a keyhole disposed to register with said second mentioned keyholes in the pair of walls.
